Are you planning a trip to the UAE in March 2026 and wondering whether the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi will remain open during Ramadan this year? The answer is YES!

Ramadan 2026 is likely to commence on 17 February 2026 and run until 19 March 2026, subject to moon sighting.

Contrary to popular belief and what may have occurred in the past during Ramadan, the stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi will remain open during the Holy Month of Ramadan in 2026 (1447).

The hours are slightly adjusted, and there is an evening closure over Iftar. During this time in the evening, the iftar cannon (Madfa al iftar) is fired, signalling the end of the day’s fasting and Maghrib prayers.

Grand Mosque Opening Hours over Ramadan 1447 (2026)

Timings for the Grand Mosque during Ramadan are usually split into the first 20 days and the last 10 days – please observe the exact timings based on moon sightings.

First 20 days of Ramadan 1447 (approx 18 Feb to 9 March)

• Saturday to Thursday: 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM & 9:30 PM to 1:00 PM
• Fridays: 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM & 9:30 PM to 1:00 AM

Last 10 days of Ramadan 1447 (approx 10 March to 19 March)

We are awaiting confirmation if they are changing the hours for the last 10 days of Ramadan, as presently there is only one set of opening hours advertised for Ramadan 1447.

• Saturday to Thursday: 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM
• Fridays 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM

Guided cultural tours will continue throughout Ramadan. There is no need to book; details will be available when you arrive.

Entry to the Grand Mosque in 2026

Entry to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque remains free for tourists, and the cultural tours are free.

Pre-registration is required to enter the Grand Mosque; there are no longer any COVID restrictions or “Green Alhosn” needed.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi over Eid

The mosque is open from Saturday to Thursday, 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM, during the first day of Eid Al-Fitr (the Feast of Breaking the Fast) and Eid Al-Adha (the Feast of Sacrifice).

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque operates with a strict dress code for visitors.

Since 2020, the ability to hire a free abaya or Kandura has been suspended for health and safety reasons. You will need to ensure you are appropriately dressed for the Grand Mosque before arriving or within the grounds of the Grand Mosque.

There is now a small souq (market) where inexpensive clothing can be bought—for example, a cheap abaya costs around AED 40 – 80 at Souq Al Jami.

Abu Dhabi Special Events in February 2026

February is the perfect time to get outdoors in Abu Dhabi. There’s often an action-packed lineup of outdoor concerts and festivals to make the most of the final month of milder weather.

However, this year, the holy month of Ramadan is set to begin from sundown on 17 February, which may affect the usual events calendar. Whilst there may be a downturn in concerts and sporting events, Ramadan will bring nights of festivity, as the Muslim population breaks their daily fasts with iftar meals around the city.

These range from simple one-dish affairs to elaborate 5* buffets. There will be Ramadan night markets and special cultural events galore, so don’t forget to check this page again before your visit for the most up-to-date information!

Cultural Events in Abu Dhabi this February

• The Al Hosn Festival 2026 will conclude on 1 February 2026 – Qasr al Hosn
• The Sheikh Zayed Heritage Festival, which is held on purpose-built festival showgrounds in Al Wathba, is in full swing during February. The festival will, however, conclude slightly early this year, in line with the start of the Holy Month of Ramadan.
• The Al Ain Heritage Festival is running from 31 January through to 9 February 2026 at ADNEC Centre, Al Ain.
• Experience the Kayan Wellness Festival on 6 & 7 February 2026, which promises feel-good vibes and holistic living experiences – Fahid Island
• Animena Abu Dhabi festival returns from 11 to 15 February 2026 – Manarat Al Saadiyat
• Al Dhafra Water Festival is usually scheduled for February/March but we are yet to see confirmed dates for 2026 – Al Mughaira Beach, Al Dhafra (Western Region).
• The holy month of Ramadan is due to start on or around the 18th February (subject to the moon sighting). As the sun sets during Ramadan, the city comes alive with vibrant iftar (the traditional meal to break the daily fast) gatherings in a wide range of venues. Live Music & Theatre

• Peppa Pig will be having another ‘Fun Day Out’ at the Etihad Arena on 1 February 2026.
• Enjoy the Saadiyat Nights concert series, with legendary songstress Mariah Carey on 7 February, followed by Canadian superstar Bryan Adams on February 11. Making his Abu Dhabi debut John Mayer will take to the stage on 15 February with the season’s closing performance – Saadiyat Island.
• Enjoy music from the UAE National Orchestra, who will be performing their ‘Faces of Love’ concert at the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation on 4 February.
• Ink – Huang Yi Studio + will truly mesmerize you with their unique blend of dance, technology, and calligraphy live at New York University Arts Center on 5 February.
• The UAE National Orchestra will also be offering a unique ‘Journey East’ in a performance that questions what could have unfolded if Vivaldi had encounter the music and instruments of the Arab world – New York University Theatre – 7 February. For a more traditional approach Russian Classics on 14 February will celebrate the music of Shostakovich, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky – also at New York University Theatre.
• Furusiyya, offers a unique insight into arab horsemanship on 7, 14 & 28 February 2026.

Sporting events in Abu Dhabi this February

• Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open Tennis WTA 500 (Women’s Tournament) will take place from 31 Jan to 7 February 2026 – Abu Dhabi International Tennis Centre
• The UCI UAE Cycling Tour will include a women’s race from 5-8 February 2026, and the men’s race between February 16 and 22 – various locations.
• TriYas Triathlon event returns for its 16th Edition on 14 February 2026 – Yas Marina Circuit

Suggested Abu Dhabi Tourist Activities in February 2026

Given the weather, you undoubtedly want to experience the best of Abu Dhabi outdoors during February. Why not try:

• Qasr Al Hosn – found in the centre of Abu Dhabi island. Home to Abu Dhabi’s original landmark building the Al Hosn Fort, this is the perfect place to come and take a step back through history during the cool and pleasant winter months, with a variety of indoor and outdoor displays.

• Kayak the Mangroves – there are a couple of superb spots to do this, both close to town. Try the Mangroves National Park at Eastern Mangroves (adjacent to the Anantara Hotel)! Kayaking is now also available at Jubail Mangrove Park, Reem Island and around the Louvre, Saadiyat Island.

• A city boat tour – A fabulous way to see the city made up of hundreds of islands; there are several departure locations and types of boats, from thrilling speed boats to more sedate traditional dhows to get out on the water and enjoy the fresh winter air.

• Enjoy an evening in the desert – most tour operators are again taking visitors to the rich golden dunes just outside of the city for a unique and memorable desert experience. Expect dune bashing, quad biking and a camel ride before settling into evening entertainment, including BBQ dinner and a dance show over shisha and henna painting.

• Enjoy the spoils of Valentine’s Day which will be widely marked at hospirality venues across the capital on Friday 14 February, and no doubt alla cross the weekend with romantic dinners and more!

• And should you find that there’s a wet and windy day, perhaps visit Abu Dhabi’s ‘Prison Island’, a network of 26 challenging escape rooms tucked inside Abu Dhabi Mall.

Day Trips from Abu Dhabi in February 2026

February is a great time to explore all that the UAE has to offer. Whilst a day trip to Dubai is an obvious choice for many visitors, here are some of the UAE’s lesser-known day trips:

• A day exploring Jebel Hafeet Desert Park – Explore the 5000-year-old beehive tombs and many hiking trails at the foot of Jebel Hafeet, Al Ain. There are also overnight camping and glamping options to consider here.
• Visit Al Ain Oasis and the various forts and palaces in Abu Dhabi’s ‘Garden City’. See how dates have been cultivated for generations using the elaborate aflaj system and visit the Palace of Sheikh Zayed, the UAE’s founding father. Try this day tour, which will include your guide and transportation.

Abu Dhabi with Kids in February 2026

There’s still plenty of fun for the kids to have outside during February 2024. Why not try:

• The CircuitX experiences on Al Hudayriat Island. Ropes course, zipline, rock climbing, and free fall are all on offer at one location, or head over to the beach and Marsana for the Skate Park and Splash Pad as the afternoons in Abu Dhabi start to heat up for Spring.
• Yas Waterworld will remain open throughout the winter this year, so grab those bathers and get ready for action! (and yes, much of the park has heated water in Feb!)
• For a cheap family outing, you can’t go past Umm Al Emarat Park with an extensive winter program of entertainment.

Indoors, there are several great experiences to be enjoyed in Abu Dhabi, such as:

• SeaWorld Yas Island is a great addition to the theme park lineup and is worth a spot on your family itinerary in Abu Dhabi.
• The Galleria on Al Maryah Island is home to several indoor family experiences, ideal for those occasional rainy days, including Caboodle, Mission Play! By Mattel, National Geographic Ultimate Explorer, Xtreme Zone, Pop in and Play, Zero Latency (VR Games) and Game Over escape rooms.

Cultural & Sightseeing Places to Visit in Abu Dhabi for FREE

You may be excited to learn that nearly all of the best cultural places to visit in Abu Dhabi are FREE or really cheap!

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The country’s most beautiful building is a mustn’t-miss attraction for residents and visitors alike and is completely FREE to enter; you can even join a guided cultural tour, completely FREE!

If you are not appropriately dressed, you may need to buy a cheap abaya or kandura from the small souk (these used to be borrowed for free, but this changed over COVID).

Open Sat – Thu 9:00 am – 10:00 pm, Fri 9:00 am – 12:00 pm & 3:00 pm to 10.00 pm.

Wahat al Karama

Immediately opposite the Grand Mosque, you will find the Wahat Al Karama War Memorial – “Oasis of Dignity”. There is a visitor centre to explore, the Pavilion of Honour, and the memorial itself, which features 31 aluminium-clad tablets representing Emirati lives lost in conflict.

You can also get beautiful photos of the Mosque from the reflective pond. Open daily 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. FREE.

Qasr al Watan

The stunning Presidential Palace is one of the city’s modern wonders and most beautiful landmark buildings.

Entry to the palace itself may blow the daily budget just a little (AED 65 per adult,) but a trip to the Palace in Motion evening sound and light show is just AED 25 per adult / AED 12 for juniors.

Palace in Motion times do vary so be sure to check show times and book in advance, last entry is 30 minutes before show time.

The Abrahamic Family House

Opened in 2023, the Abrahamic Family House is an interfaith complex comprising a mosque, a church, and a synagogue located on Saadiyat Island. The aim of the complex is to welcome people from all walks of life to exchange knowledge and practice faith. Visitors of all faiths are invited to learn about the three Abrahamic faiths and their rituals.

Open to visitors Tuesday – Sunday 10:00 am – 5.00 pm.

The Abrahamic Family House is FREE to enter, but visitor tickets must be booked in advance and follow the dress code for religious buildings in Abu Dhabi.

Emirates Heritage Village

Based on the breakwater near Abu Dhabi Marina Mall, take a step back in time to experience traditional desert life in the heart of the city. Learn about traditional crafts, Bedouin housing and falconry.

Open Thu-Sat 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Fri 7.30 am – 12.00 pm & 3.30 pm-9:00 pm. FREE entry

The Founders Memorial

Situated near Emirates Palace, before the breakwater, this exhibition is a visitor information centre as well as The Constellation, a giant artwork that lights up at night in the image of Sheikh Zayed.

The visitor centre is open 9:00 am – 10:00 pm daily, and FREE tours are possible.

Emirates Palace

No need to have an extravagant booking; at most times, visitors are free to come and admire the front steps and inside Emirates Palace. You can take your photos, but remain respectful; covered knees and shoulders are required for ladies and gents, no shorts.

Staying for gold flake coffee, afternoon tea, or a camel burger is, of course, recommended, but anything beyond admiration and a few photos to mark the occasion will likely break the AED 100 daily budget!

Al Maqta’a Museum

Freshly renovated and reopened in May 2025, this former Customs House was built in the 1950s to monitor entry to Abu Dhabi when the first causeway was constructed to Abu Dhabi island (Now dwarfed by the much larger Sheikh Zayed Bridge).

The building has been preserved for its socio-cultural importance as a shared effort between the Department of Culture and Tourism and the Abu Dhabi Police. The free exhibits here focus on policing throughout the decades.

Warehouse 421

A cultural destination in Abu Dhabi’s port area of Mina Zayed. Warehouses have been transformed for artistic expression, understanding, and further development of the UAE’s creative community.

Manarat al Saadiyat

Enjoy many FREE art exhibitions, film screenings, and paid workshops in this creative space and cultural hub on Saadiyat Island. Shows can book out, so reservations are still required.

Etihad Modern Art Gallery

Housed inconspicuously in a villa in Al Bateen (Behind Al Bateen Mall), this contemporary art space and café is FREE to visit and enjoy works from Emirati and UAE-based artists.

Opening hours are advertised as 8.00 am until 9.00 pm daily, although seasonal variations may apply.

New York University Art Gallery

Offering seasonal exhibitions from both local and international artists, the New York University Art Gallery is completely FREE to visit.

Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 12noon until 8.00 pm.

Salwa Zeidan Gallery

A real hidden gem, the Salwa Zeidan Gallery, located at the Millennium Al Rawdah Hotel, champions local and regional artists. Exhibitions rotate regularly and include painting, photography, sculpture, and the performing arts.

Open Monday to Friday 10.00 am until 6.00 pm – timings may vary. Entry is FREE!

Abu Dhabi Children’s Library

Abu Dhabi’s stunning children’s library is well worth a visit. You can spend hours looking at books in the comfortable and quirky reading spaces around the 5,250-square-meter site, and it’s all completely FREE!

Located at the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation in Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Street in the Al Hosn area of Abu Dhabi.

Open 9:00 am – 8:00 pm Saturday – Thursday, and 2:00 pm – 8:00 pm Friday.

Camel Racing

No trip to the UAE is complete without taking in a dose of camels, and what better way to do it than watching them race at the Al Wathba race track? Sure, there might be more 4WDs than camels… It’s all part of the fun.

Held weekends and public holidays during the cooler winter months around dawn. (Exact timetables and information are hard to come by). An amazing place to experience the heart and soul of Abu Dhabi, and one of the best things to do for FREE in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi Fish Market

Visiting a local market is an interesting addition to any trip, and the most interesting market in Abu Dhabi is undoubtedly the fish market. The new Fish Market, opened in 2022, has 104 fresh fish stalls and 44 cleaning stations.

Whilst it’s missing some of the charm of the old fish market, it has the same bustling atmosphere and is a great place to see the variety of fish and seafood caught locally.

Open daily from 7:00 am until 9:00 pm (10:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays).

The market is completely FREE to enter.

Enjoy a ladies’ night!

Not for families, but we thought we should mention the FREE and very cheap ladies’ nights around the city.

Often these involve a small cover charge, which entitles ladies to a small plate of food and unlimited alcoholic drinks for the evening; sometimes the requirement is that food must be purchased for ladies to drink for free.

Some ladies’ nights are totally free and provide a limited number (usually 3) of free drinks. Offers change regularly, but we’ve rounded up some of the best Abu Dhabi Ladies Night deals available right now below:

• Pacifico Tiki – Al Bandar – Every Monday, ladies get unlimited house beverages while dining from 7.00 pm until 11.00 pm.
• Warehouse- Pearl Rotana, Capital Centre – Enjoy one food item and five house beverages for just AED 120 every Wednesday from 5.00 pm.

Outdoor Family Fun in Abu Dhabi for FREE

There are so many great outdoor spaces and beautiful beaches in Abu Dhabi that can be enjoyed totally FREE (or with a very small entry fee).

The Corniche and Al Bahar

The Corniche Beach has been one of Abu Dhabi’s highlights for years, whilst A’l Bahar opened in 2018 as a new family entertainment district on the beachfront near to Nation Towers.

Much of the beachfront has been rejuvenated and is FREE to use during daylight hours. The family beach area charges AED 10 per adult for access to clean, relatively private facilities.

You could optionally spend money on some extras, including bike hire and activities within the Al Bahar complex, such as ropes courses and the inflatable obstacle course that may blow your daily budget.

Several play parks, splash areas, and skate parks all along the Corniche, though, are completely FREE.

Public beach areas have lifeguards on duty during daylight hours, and the Corniche footpath stays open 24/7 for recreational use.

Umm al Emmarat Park (formerly Mushrif Park)

You will find this beautiful family park in the centre of Abu Dhabi island. Its botanical gardens, play parks, wadi, petting zoo, and extensive lawns make it the perfect urban escape.

A cover charge of AED 10 per person applies. Additional activities, such as feeding the animals and using the train, cost extra.

You will also find the RIPE food & craft market on a Saturday afternoon (3:00 pm – 9:00 pm) during the cooler winter months.

Reem Central Park

Reem Central Park on Al Reem Island is another new public park, featuring food trucks, play grounds and recreation spaces for all ages to enjoy, all free.

Yas Gateway Parks

For one week of the year, they are car parking for the Grand Prix – the other 51 weeks, two superb free parks for families to enjoy!

Grab bikes or scooters, or enjoy the play parks and barbeques in Gateway Park North and Gateway Park South. FREE.

Sheikha Fatima Park

Spanning 46,000 square meters of reimagined urban space, the beautiful oasis that is Sheikha Fatima Park is a stunning feature. Set back a block from Abu Dhabi Corniche, Sheikha Fatima Park is split into three zones.

Zone 1 contains winding pathways through landscaped gardens. Zone 2 features a skate park, splash park, a beautiful outdoor playground, and an indoor play area, as well as Abu Dhabi’s only pet park.

Zone 3 comprises a large grassed area suitable for sports, concerts, and outdoor cinema, as well as numerous cafes and restaurants. There are various murals around the park that also shouldn’t be missed!

The park is open daily, 6:00 am -10:00 pm – Seasonal variations may apply.

Entry to the park is FREE. Some activities attract a small charge.

Al Bateen Beach

On the west side of Abu Dhabi Island, the low-key Al Bateen Beach is a family winner. Safe patrolled swimming with an adjacent play park, lawn, and a women-only section (Paid, 25AED adults, 5AED kids).

Open 10:00 am to 10:00 pm; swimming allowed until sunset.

Al Hudayriat Island

Located to the west of Abu Dhabi island (continue along 19th, beyond Al Bateen Beach), Al Hudayriat Island is a sports and recreation paradise!

Some sections of the beach attract a charge, but there is still a beautiful stretch of sand that’s free to use (a fee for sun loungers and umbrellas applies). You’ll find everything you need here, including changing rooms and public toilets.

Put together your own basketball or beach volleyball games, play on the pristine white sandy beach, or let the kids run off some steam at the playground.

There are numerous food trucks as well as a handful of permanent restaurants.

The bike tracks around the island can be used for FREE, but you will have to pay extra if you choose to participate in other sporting activities like those run by Circuit X for kids, and to hire sports pitches and courts.

You’ll also find the Hudayriyat Heritage Trail, which explores the island’s past, for free.

Saadiyat Beach

The most stunning stretch of white sand beach in the Middle East, facing the Arabian Gulf, is home to a string of luxury beach resorts and beach clubs.

Whilst you’ll need to play for any of the club and resort facilities, Saadiyat Beach itself is public property and is technically free to walk along and splash in the water.

Eastern Mangroves National Park

Enjoy a view of the mangroves from the Eastern Mangroves hotel complex. For an extra cost, you can hire kayaks or eco donut boats to enjoy the mangroves close up, or take a stroll along the 4.5 km-long Al Gurm Corniche, stretching to 19th Street.

NB – this area is currently undergoing major rejuvenation works as at early 2026 so many of the recreation services available here have relocated.

Jubail Mangrove Park

Head to Jubail Mangrove Park, just off the Saadiyat highway, for a longer walk through the mangroves. Explore the mangroves from elevated boardwalks.

Entry to the boardwalk costs 20 AED for adults and children over the age of 11, while children under 11 pay 10 AED. This makes the activity fairly affordable for a family of four.

You can opt to pay more to enjoy your experience with a park ranger as a guide, or perhaps you might like to book one of the many kayaking experiences that take place on the site.

Al Wathba Wetland Reserve

Based just outside of the city, heading towards Al Ain on the Truck Road, you’ll find this protected wetlands area, home to over 250 species of birds, including Flamingos.

Limited operating hours, Thu & Sat 8:00 am – 4:00 pm from September to April only (Temporarily closed- January 2026). FREE.

FREE Sports & Recreation Activities in Abu Dhabi

If there’s one thing the city really excels at, its providing opportunities to access recreation activities for free, helping the community stay fit and active.

Yas Marina Circuit

Whilst attending the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will set you back a packet, you can exercise almost year-round on the Yas Marina Circuit track for FREE.

The 5.5km Yas track is open to the public 3 nights a week for TrainYas (running, walking, and cycling), plus several mornings for cycling only (TrainAM 6:00 am to 8:00 am).

Pre-registration is required, but entry is free. Those without a bike can hire one of the limited number of FREE bikes, or more experienced riders can hire a professional track bike from on-site vendors.

Every Monday, Tuesday (ladies only), and Wednesday from 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm.

Al Wathba Cycle Track

Those who like to get some distance in their ride should head just beyond Mussafah to Al Wathba, near Endurance Village. The Al Wathba Cycle Track is open 24/7 (floodlit at night) and has 8km, 16km, 20km, 22km, and 30km options, completely FREE.

Khalifa International Bowling Centre

You can never go past bowling for some indoor family fun! Prices at this ZSC venue start from just AED 25 a game (plus look out for 2-4-1 vouchers). Don’t miss the awesome Chinese restaurant upstairs!

FREE Places to visit in Al Ain

There are many fun and free (and very affordable) things to do in the cultural capital, Al Ain, which is 1.5 hours from Abu Dhabi, making it a great day trip destination.

• Jebel Hafeet – a great experience to road trip to the tallest peak in Abu Dhabi emirate for spectacular views over Al Ain and the border to Oman. FREE.

• Green Mubazzarah – picnic or dip your feet in the natural hot springs at the foot of Jebel Hafeet. FREE (The little train is an extra AED 20 per adult/10 AED per child, and camping in one of the chalets comes with an overnight fee).

• Experience the UNESCO World Heritage Sites – which include the Al Ain Oasis (FREE) Hili Archaeological Park and the Hafeet Tombs in Jebel Hafit Desert Park (some experiences paid).

• Al Ain Palace Museum – the birthhome of the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed, is a beautifully restored example of traditional Bedouin architecture. Open 9:00 am to 7:00 pm (Temporarily Closed). FREE.

• Qasr al Muwaiji – the birthplace of Sheikh Khalifa, historic fort and exhibit. Open 9:00 am to 7:00 pm. FREE

• Al Ain Classic Car Museum – cover charge of AED 15 adults, AED 5 for Children 5 – 15 years

• Al Jahili Fort – historic building and photography exhibit, also stroll the beautiful Al Jahili Park next door. FREE

• Al Ain Zoo – arguably one of the Emirate’s top tourist attractions, including the Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre. Adults AED 30, kids AED 10.

• Souq Al Qattara – shop at the handicrafts market on Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays during winter. FREE (but bring your spending money for some unique souvenirs!)

• Camel Souk – you don’t get a more real and interactive experience than the heart of a camel market in Al Ain! FREE.

Abu Dhabi Emirate – FREE Places to Visit Beyond the City

If you’ve got your own set of wheels and you’re confident driving in Abu Dhabi, there’s a huge, big sandpit out there to explore! Once you’ve accounted for the cost of fuel, why not try:

• Dune Bashing in the Empty Quarter (or almost any patch of the desert!
• Explore the forts of the Liwa Desert. The Liwa Oasis is the ancestral home of the Bani Yas tribe and contains many forts and watchtowers that are FREE to visit. The best place to start your discovery of Liwa’s forts is at the Al Dhafra Fort museum (open daily 10.00am until 6.00pm), before moving on to the Mezairaa Fort and Khanoor Fort (note that these forts are only open to the public at certain times of the year, for example during the Liwa Festival), but they’re still worth a drive-by on your way into the desert for camping (or a stray at a desert resort). Another land mark that has no admission fee is the Tal Moreeb – one of the world’s biggest sand dunes standing at a massive 300 metres.

• Explore the Fossil Dunes (8:00 AM to 8:00 PM) and the unique salt lake near Al Wathba – FREE
• Visit the Emirates National Auto Museum (adults AED 50, kids free)
• Explore Dalma Island and Al-Meraikhi Old House – a historic pearl diving home (Ferry charges apply, but entry to the island and the museum is FREE).
• Stroll the Mamsha al Mugheirah boardwalk- the Western Region’s answer to the stunning mangroves; here, you’ll find a beautiful and educational boardwalk experience, food trucks, and much more in this rejuvenated beachfront location.

And at night time…

• Another place that’s free to visit and has gained a lot of popularity in recent years is the Al Quaa Milky Way viewing spot out in the desert. Unless you’re an experienced 4WD driver who knows the terrain well, this trip is best left to experienced professionals. We recommend Arabian Wanderers for this, as they offer both an adults-only and a family tour to Al Quaa with pick-ups that can be arranged from both Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
• Go camping at the beach or in the desert (sand driving experience and equipment necessary)

FREE Transport in Abu Dhabi

Some more money-saving tips in Abu Dhabi you may not be aware of:

• Getting around Yas Island is made easy with FREE Yas Express minibuses. These operate between the hotels and key theme park and tourist attractions on Yas Island, as well as services that run from Saadiyat Island to Yas and from Dubai to Yas Island daily.

• If your timings are flexible, take advantage of the Vist Abu Dhabi courtesy bus system to get between major city attractions and hotels.

• Are you transiting between Dubai or Abu Dhabi for a flight? You may be able to use the Free airline buses operated by Emirates and Etihad to get across the UAE

Staying in Abu Dhabi for FREE

Now, what could be better for saving money on your city stay than getting your accommodation for free?

Etihad is offering transit passengers through AUH an appealing option to stay in one of their designated hotels free of charge for 1 and 2-night stopovers.

There are a few catches to being able to utilise the free night(s) – namely, your flight must be with Etihad (or Etihad-operated codeshare), and you must stay at least 24 hours. Your transfers and meals are NOT included – but as we’ve shown you above, there are so many ways you can see Abu Dhabi on a budget.

Is there an ideal time to visit Abu Dhabi? With long, hot summers and mild, inviting winters, November to April is the preferred time for most visitors to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

This guide looks at what to expect in the different seasons and annual events you may want to plan your visit around.

What to Expect in Winter in Abu Dhabi

In the winter, Abu Dhabi is a fun, exciting, and culturally enriching place to visit. There are seasonal outdoor events aplenty and lots of sunshine hours to enjoy with pleasant weather.

January is the coolest point of the year, and the average temperature slowly rises over February.

At the coolest point of the year, you can expect daily maximums to usually reach around a pleasant 23°C (73°F), and overnight lows dip to around 18°C (64°F). It’s cool enough you will probably want a cardigan or pullover in the evenings – you can see our full list of suggested items to pack for Abu Dhabi here.

Sea temperatures can be a little cooler than you may expect, dipping to an average between 20°C to 25°C in winter (70°F to 75°F), a little too chilly for some to take a dip! But rest assured, if you are visiting Abu Dhabi for a resort stay, the pool will most likely be heated.

You know winter has truly hit Abu Dhabi when the Park Market returns to Umm Al Emarat Park, followed by flag day, then the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix leading into National Day (Eid Al Etihad) in early December. This is followed by a busy winter festivities period and spectacular New Year’s celebrations. Most large public events and al fresco dining happen in the winter through until April.

What to Expect During Summer in Abu Dhabi

Whilst summer might not be the ideal time to visit Abu Dhabi, there are still plenty of great reasons to take an Abu Dhabi summer holiday.

Life in Abu Dhabi moves indoors from around the end of May through until mid-October. Having an arid climate in the desert, peak summer daytime temperatures in Abu Dhabi can be as high as 50°C (122°F), though you’ll find the average daytime high is in the low 40s. Overnight, the air temperature in summer doesn’t dip below 30°C.

Be aware that August and September particularly also suffer from humidity, which can make the “feels like” temperature much higher than the reported air temperature.

Visitors to Abu Dhabi in summer should be mindful not only of air temperatures but also sea temperatures, which can rise to 31-35°C mid-summer – not exactly a refreshing ocean dip! You’ll want to check that your accommodation has a temperature-controlled pool.

The great thing about summer in Abu Dhabi, though, is you can take advantage of many great offers on luxury hotels at a fraction of the normal price you’d pay in peak season.

Although there is extreme heat to contend with, it can be managed with careful itinerary planning and a focus on indoor activities in Abu Dhabi – such as exploring the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Qasr Al Watan or the Theme parks of Yas Island.

We suggest excluding daytime outdoor activities from your agenda and refraining from considering a desert safari from roughly the end of May to early October; even the evenings can be sticky, hot, and unpleasant.

By October, the temperatures start to recede, and humidity drops. By November, you are back to mild and pleasant winter conditions—possibly even occasional rain showers.

Is There a Best Time to Visit Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi doesn’t have seasons as such, moving from mild to hot, to very hot to OMG, can it be that hot! Unlike most of the northern hemisphere, Abu Dhabi really only has a short, mild winter, and then summer – spring and autumn are fairly non-existent!

You are better off gauging the best time to visit Abu Dhabi and the UAE on how much heat you can tolerate.

The shoulder seasons of February to April and October to November are best for beach weather.

These are the mean maximum and minimum temperatures you should expect, along with the extreme maximums and minums experienced over the past 17 years.

If you don’t tolerate the heat well, the best month to visit Abu Dhabi is January.

You do run the risk of some rainfall in winter, but its so infrequent, we wouldn’t let it dampen your plans.

There are an increasing number of sporting and cultural events that occur in Abu Dhabi that you may also want to consider in planning the timing of your trip to the Middle East.

Common questions about Abu Dhabi’s weather

Does Abu Dhabi get rain?

Yes! It might take you by surprise, but rain is possible over the cooler winter months (or it could stay completely dry!). Over the last ten years, it has rained on average five days of the year.

No need to pack an umbrella just in case. If it does rain, it’s best just to stay put if you can until it passes. It’s unlikely to go on for hours; but note that the roads can flash flood during rain and thunderstorms, and driving becomes chaotic.

Does Abu Dhabi get sandstorms?

Yes! Dust or sand storms are a common occurrence in the UAE. Maybe not the extreme that you see in the movies (looking at you, Mission Impossible!) But nonetheless, there can be a lot of dust in the air.

The problem in most of the UAE is the fine layer of dust that develops pretty much year-round. A hazard of being in the middle of the desert, you will discover pretty quickly why most people don’t hang their washing outside!

Those with severe asthma and other respiratory conditions should keep abreast of the AQI if it’s dusty out.

Does Abu Dhabi get fog?

Yes! The most common atmospheric condition you will encounter after dust is fog. This can cause havoc, particularly in the winter months with the major airports. There’s no way of predicting it in advance, but it’s one of those things you might need to factor into your travel plans if it occurs during your visit.

Normally it burns off by late morning, but it can make overnight and early morning driving hazardous (more so than usual!) and delay planes.

Religion & Religious Holidays in Abu Dhabi

As a Muslim country, as well as following the Gregorian calendar, the Hijri Calendar is observed for religious holidays.

Note: The weekend in Abu Dhabi is now 2.5 days, running from Friday afternoon and through Saturday and Sunday for Government entities, schools and many private businesses. These days are much busier than during the week Monday through Thursday.

Public Holidays in Abu Dhabi

The main Religious observances are:

• The holy month of Ramadan
• Eid al-Fitr
• Arafat Day & Eid al-Adha
• Hijri New Year
• Mawlid al-Nabi al-Sharif – the Prophet’s birthday

These dates move forward roughly ten days each year compared to the Gregorian calendar. Actual dates are not confirmed until the moon is sighted, and the Government may move the actual dates that the public holiday is observed. These are the predicted dates for the coming year:

The UAE also celebrates/observes:

• New Year’s Day on 1 January
• Commemoration Day on 30 November
• National Day on 2-3 December

Ramadan in Abu Dhabi

It’s important to observe each year when the Holy Month of Ramadan – the 9th month on the Hijri calendar will occur (the start date changes by approximately ten days on the Gregorian calendar each year). This period of deep religious reflection for Muslims is strictly observed.

Ramadan in 2026 will start approximately 18 February and end 19 March 

The most important thing to observe is fasting, with no eating in public allowed and no public displays of affection, ensuring the modest dress code is strictly followed. It can be a little confusing for visitors to know exactly what to expect.

We certainly wouldn’t advise against visiting at this time, but you will have quite a different experience, joining in with iftar (the evening breaking of the fast) and overnight festivities, including suhoor.

You may also observe that many businesses and attractions are closed during the day and only open in the evening. If you are only in Abu Dhabi for a short stopover, you need to be conscious of this. However, daytime dining rules and opening hour restrictions have changed in recent years.

If you’ve visited the Middle East before during Ramadan, please be aware that things in the UAE are now VERY different than even five years ago; as a tourist, Ramadan will have minimal impact on your plans in Abu Dhabi.

School Holidays in Abu Dhabi

Visitors should be mindful when local school holidays occur in Abu Dhabi. The majority of Abu Dhabi schools work on a three-term school year from September to December, January to March, and April to June (some Asian curriculum schools run a different calendar year).

School holidays in Abu Dhabi generally occur:

• Late March to early April
• Most of July & August
• Early-December to early January

Some schools also have mid-term breaks in late October, mid-February and late May.

If you visit at any of the peak school holiday times, expect hotel accommodation to cost more and attractions to be busier, although you will not notice the same extreme crowds in Abu Dhabi as you do in Dubai during peak times. School holidays usually mean more family-friendly activities around town- particularly during winter break.

Seeing attractions earlier in the day, you will always encounter fewer crowds than in the evening; it is very much a stay-up-late and evening culture in Abu Dhabi, even for families.

What can I fit into 3 days in Abu Dhabi?

With only 3 days, you can expect to cover most of the city’s prominent cultural landmarks and also have some time for relaxation or a little thrill-seeking. We recommend making a cultural sandwich, with a day of sightseeing either side of a day of relaxation, but you can of course, mix things up and do them your own way.

We’ve kept this itinerary brief, but you can find out everything you need to know about each location by clicking through the links to more extensive guides.

We would suggest keeping your exploration within Abu Dhabi, though it is possible to dedicate one day to visiting Dubai on a Day trip – we cover this in more detail at the end of the article!

Timing can be everything! Note that many flights arrive into Abu Dhabi in the early hours of the morning – we suggest you book your hotel room to cover this first night and get some rest before an action packed few days in the Capital! What you choose to do on your three days in Abu Dhabi, will depend on the time of year that you visit, with many outdoor options only really possible from late September until late April.

Day 1 – A day of majesty, The Grand Mosque and the Palaces of Abu Dhabi

• 9.00 am – Start your day by arriving early at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (dress code applies). Take a tour through this magnificent building before heading to the Ritz-Carlton for morning coffee and views of the mosque from a distance.

• 11.00 am – Take a taxi to Qasr Al Hosn, the old palace-fortress of Abu Dhabi, where you can find out about life in the Emirate over the years. Don’t forget to visit the adjoining House of the Artisans to learn about traditional local crafts, like basket making and al-sadu weaving.

• 1.00 pm – Grab a spot of lunch on Abu Dhabi Corniche. Sandy beaches and the crystal clear waters of the Persian Gulf flank the Abu Dhabi Corniche. Here, you will find a variety of hotels and shopping centers, offering a range of dining options.
  • One option is to take lunch at the luxurious Emirates Palace Hotel. Here you can try all sorts of local delicacies, from a tasty camel burger to a luxurious gold-topped cappuccino, in an opulent gold-glad setting (dress code applies).
  • Another nice, more relaxed spot, can be found in the form of Cafe Bateel, in the Nation Towers Mall. This specialist date shop also serves up a variety of salads, sandwiches, and local dishes with beautiful sea views.
  • If you want to find some ‘traditional’ gifts for family and friends, you could opt to visit the modern souk on the ground floor of the WTC (World Trade Centre) Mall, where you will also find some cost-effective cafes and date shops.

After a huge day of tourism around the city, it’s time to enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your hotel before heading to either Yas Island or Saadiyat Island for a day of adrenaline-pumping thrills or mind-calming relaxation.

• If you choose the Yas Island option, you can easily enjoy two of the four current Miral-owned theme parks (Ferrari World, WB World Abu Dhabi, Sea World Abu Dhabi, or Yas Waterworld) in one day and avail of the two park pass which gives you discounted entry.
  • Most of the parks open at 10.00 am, although the hours do differ depending on the time of year.
  • Don’t forget to bring your driving license if you fancy having the chance to drive a real Ferrari around Yas Island (you’ll also need your credit card for the security deposit)!
  • Towels can be hired if you include a stop at Yas Waterworld, so no need to lug these around all day.

• After a day of thrills and spills, head to Yas Marina, at the heart of the Yas Marina Circuit for sundowners and a relaxed bite, or book yourself on a traditional dhow cruise around Yas Bay.
• Alternatively, indulge in some retail therapy before dinner to suit all budgets at Yas Mall.
• Had to one of our favourite nighttime hotspots, Yas Bay Waterfont. Offering a wide range of dining options from pub vibes at Lock Stock or family bowling and beers at Central, through to high end dining choices such as Asia Asia, Hunter and Barrel, or the super chilled Cafe Del Mar beach club (adults only).

Prefer a day of chilled vibes over theme park thrills?

• Choosing the Saadiyat option, you could book yourself a spa experience at one of Saadiyat’s beautiful 5* resorts, or treat yourself to a day at one of the hotel’s or public beach clubs.
  • Many hotels offer water sports, as well as access to the beach and pool at a day rate, even if you’re not staying at one of these ultra luxury hotels.
  • Look for ladies days deals, or some of the best beach clubs will offer rates fully redemmable on F&B

• After a chilled-out day, enjoy dinner in a beachfront restaurant whilst watching the sunset – Mamsha al Saadiyat has many fabulous options for this, or head back to Abu Dhabi Corniche for a traditional Dhow Cruise.

Day 3 – From Beach to Desert – A Cultural Journey

• After breakfast, head to Saadiyat Cultural District on Saadiyat Island, where you will find a number of museums, galleries, and cultural centres.
  • We recommend a visit to the architectural masterpiece that is the Louvre, Abu Dhabi. Medina-like complexes from around the world highlight the similarities in human history and creativity across civilizations.
  • Travelling with children, there’s also a small Children’s Museum to add on to your experience, as well as simply enjoying the stunning domed roof and water features.

• There’s also the newly opened Zayed National Museum and the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi.
• You could also choosee to visit the Abrahamic Family House, a unique multifaith complex that houses a mosque, church, and synagogue. The project was designed to foster interreligious dialogue, peaceful coexistence, and tolerance, and offers the chance for visitors to learn more about the three Abrahamic religions.
• Each deserves at least 2-3 hours so you will need to select which of the major attractions to visit, don’t cram them all in! We’d recommend one morning and one early afternoon.

• Another option is to return to Abu Dhabi Corniche and visit the old dhow harbour and fish market, or stroll along the Corniche, taking in the sights and sounds of the city. The fish market is actually a new build, but carries much of the charm of ‘old Abu Dhabi’ with fresh catch of the day cooked in front of you!

• After a day of sightseeing in the city, get picked up (from various locations) for a taste of life in the desert. As you embark on your desert safari, you’ll get to grips with local flora and fauna, as well as have the opportunity for camel riding, sand surfing, and so much more.
  • Most desert safaris offer a buffet dinner as well as entertainment (belly dance, tanoura dance, and oud player) well into the evening.
  • Most companies will offer you a return service door-to-door to your city hotel, though a limited number offer overnight camping.

• If a desert safari is not for you (and let’s be honest, during the hottest summer months, June – September, we wouldn’t recommend it), enjoy dinner at one of Abu Dhabi’s snazziest spots, before heading to a rooftop terrace to relax under the stars.

• Take a boat trip to one of Abu Dhabi’s many desert islands! Whether you’re looking for a deserted space, or want to spend the day at a 5* luxury resort, there’s something for everyone just of the city’s shores!

• As you drive along the Corniche, you could also check out the Founders Memorial (close to the Emirates Palace, an incredible three-dimensional portrait of the UAE’s late beloved leader.

• Abu Dhabi’s National Aquarium is home to 46,000 marine creatures and is one of the region’s largest aquariums. Split into 10 zones, it is the perfect place for adults and children alike to learn about the local and worldwide marine environment. Follow up with lunch or dinner in the Al Qana area of the city.

• Take a kayaking tour of Abu Dhabi’s famous mangroves. These are available at various locations around the city, including the Eastern Mangroves and Yas Island.

• For anyone who would like to experience the beauty of the mangroves but keep their feet on dry land, we recommend a visit to the Jubail Mangrove Park, where you can enjoy spotting flamingos and other visitors to this stunning natural habitat from a network of interconnected walkways.

• If you have time to spare and would like to relax in green surroundings, we would recommend a trip to Umm Al Emarat Park. This beautiful park and botanical garden is a stunning example of modern Arabian urban design. There are numerous water features, flower gardens, restaurants, and playgrounds (including a splash pad), and a petting zoo, making this a wonderful place to pass a few hours, especially if you’re travelling with children.

• Make a day trip to Al Ain and visit Al Ain Oasis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discover royal palaces and ancient tombs, and perhaps even visit the local camel market! You can see the highlights in a day but an overnight trip is ideal to fit in the highlights of the historic Oasis City.

• Here on a weekend? Make sure to check out some of the best brunches in Abu Dhabi! These are all afternoon dining feasts, most commmonly on a Saturday afternoon that show off the best cuisine Abu Dhbai has to offer in all-includive packages with drinks and entertainment thrown in.

• Don’t forget to check what’s on at the Etihad Arena, which has in the past hosted runs of West End shows such as Mamma Mia! and The Lion King, as well as performances by Guns ‘n’ Roses, Monster Trucks, NBA games, and UFC matches.

Abu Dhabi in 3 days with Family

Travelling to Abu Dhabi with kids? We would stick to a fairly similar itinerary to the one outlined above.

For younger children, we’d slow the pace and perhaps remove a stop from Day 1 to keep kids energised and interested. With older kids, they’ll still get plenty of enjoyment out of the city’s incredible sites and architecture, but may want more emphasis on the theme parks, dessert sports and indoor entertainment options.

Got Longer in the UAE?

With more than 3-days in Abu Dhabi, we’d suggest adding in a day trip to another Emirate in the UAE (Abu Dhabi is one seven ‘Emirates’).

The most obvious choice is neighbouring Dubai (in fact, your journey may start or end here).

• Only around 160km away, Dubai makes for an easy day trip from Dubai, with many tour operators able to take you on a highlights trip or you could easily take the Intercity coach from Abu Dhabi Central Station to Dubai.

• Highlights you mignt want to include in a day:
  • Burj Khalifa and Downtown Dubai, followed by a show at Dubai Opera
  • Take in the Al Fahidi Hictorical District and cross Dubai Creek by abra to ‘Old Dubai’
  • Meet the modern side of Dubai around Dubai Marina and Bluewaters Island

As for the other five emirates (commonly referred to as ‘the Northern Emirates’), these all involve a drive through Dubai first, which depending on the time of day can be a traffic nightmare!

Nonetheless, you could hire a car and visit the Hajar Mountains of Ras Al Khaimah, or go snorkelling at Snoppy Island in Fujairah – albeit with travel time we’d recommend you’re better of tackling these as overnight trips.

Where are DARB toll gates in Abu Dhabi located?

Abu Dhabi’s toll gates are found in 4 locations, all bridges that lead onto the main Abu Dhabi island; you’ll find them on:

• Sheikh Zayed Bridge (Sas Al Nakhl Toll Gate)
• Mussafah Bridge (Rabdan Toll Gate)
• Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Bridge (Al Saadiyat Toll Gate)
• Al Maqta’a Bridge (Al Maqta Toll Gate)

They operate in both directions, both on and off Abu Dhabi island.

NB – drivers have recently reported seeing two new toll gates on the E11 (Highway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai) at Al Qurm and Ghantoot. These rumours have NOT been confirmed by Abu Dhabi mobility, but we can only assume they may well be added to the existing network at some point.

When are DARB gates in Abu Dhabi operational?

Toll Gates in Abu Dhabi do not run 24 hours a day. Since the change to weekends in the UAE, the toll gates now operate only during peak periods, Monday through Saturday:

• Mornings 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM
• Evenings (new from 1 September 2025) 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM

No tolls are levied on Sundays or Public Holidays.

During Ramadan, DARB tolls are operational six days a week:

• Mornings 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM
• Afternoons 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM

What Do Road Tolls Cost in Abu Dhabi?

Every time you pass under a DARB toll gate during operational hours, you are charged AED 4, up to a maximum of AED 16 per day.

Note that the monthly caps were abolished on 1 September 2025 (previously, AED 200 per month for your first car, AED 150 for a second car, and AED 100 for subsequent vehicles).

Abu Dhabi Toll Gate Exemptions

There are exemptions for People of Determination, Senior Citizens, and low-income Emiratis. These exemptions must be applied for.

Automatically exempt are motorcycles, taxis, school buses, public transport buses, emergency services vehicles, and passenger buses with more than 26 passengers.

Fines For Using Toll Roads Unregistered

Unregistered vehicles passing under DARB tolls will be fined:

• AED 100 from the first day
• AED 200 from the second day
• AED 400 for the third day and beyond

Fines are also issued for vehicles with insufficient balance in their DARB account (without Abu Dhabi plates), after 5 working days at AED 50 per day.

How Do I Register My Car For Abu Dhabi Tolls?

Rental Vehicles in the UAE

The good news is that if you are only renting a car in Abu Dhabi or from anywhere in the UAE, including Dubai, your car rental company is obliged to register the vehicle; there is nothing further for you to do as the renter.

However, you must be aware that when you have driven under the toll gates during operational hours, your rental company will invoice you or debit your account after your rental (plus, most likely, an administrative fee).

Privately owned vehicles

If you own a vehicle in any Emirate of the UAE, you will need to register it with DARB or risk a fine.

You can register your vehicle on DARB here.

As part of the registration process, you must pre-load a balance on your account – your ewallet.

You will need to have a resident visa and an Emirates ID in order to register (and own) a vehicle and provide a traffic file number.

You can manage your account through the DARB mobile App (Google | App Store)

Uber & Careem in Abu Dhabi

Ridesharing apps, including Uber and Careem (now owned by Uber), operate in the capital. They are becoming increasingly popular to book, alongside taxis, particularly in the evenings when finding cabs lined up at a rank can be harder.

Careem offers a range of different cars, including Economy Limo, Careem Kids (fitted with one child seat), Max & Careem Assist. You select your car type, and the exact fare will be calculated via the Careem App (Google) | Careem (App Store)

You can also use Uber via the Uber App (Google) | Click here for App Store. As part of their terms of reintroduction to the Abu Dhabi market, their service is at a premium above regular taxis.

Uber AV’s (Driverless Taxis)

[NEW!] If you are interested in trying the new Autonomous Vehicles (AV), ie, driverless taxis, in Abu Dhabi, note that they operate only on specific routes between Yas Island and Saadiyat Island.

You must use UberX or Uber Comfort and have ‘Autonomous Vehicle‘ set as a preference in your settings.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Opening Times

Through the majority of the year (with the exception of Ramadan – see more below), the Grand Mosque is open daily to the public:

Saturday to Thursday:

• Open from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM (last entry 9:30 PM)

Friday:

• Open from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM & 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM (last entry 9:30 PM)

Note that entrance to the Grand Mosque is FREE and free cultural tours are available. You do not need to take a tour and can view the mosque at your own pace if you’d prefer, but the tour is highly recommended for first timers.

Whilst entry is free, they still ask guests to register. To save time on your arrival at the Grand Mosque, you can pre-register your visit details here.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Night Opening Hours

New in 2024! The Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi will now be extending its opening hours overnight, with the option to take a “Sura” overnight cultural tour.

Perfectly designed for overnight stopover passengers in Abu Dhabi, the night tours can now be booked online, from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. They last about 45 minutes and include a multimedia e-guide device.

• Note that these tours come with a pre-paid charge of AED 20

Although the mosque is now open 24/7, you cannot simply arrive after 9:30 PM unless you’re on a designated tour or attending worship services.

Ramadan Opening Times for the Grand Mosque

Opening times during Ramadan have varied over the years; these are the advertised opening hours for the Grand Mosque over Ramadan 1446 (2025).

Ramadan 2026 is expected to start on 18 February 2026 and run through until 20 March 2026, subject to Moon Sighting.

During the first 20 Days of Ramadan:

• Saturday to Thursday: 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM & 9:00 PM to 1:00 AM
• Fridays: 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM & 9:30 PM to 1:00 AM
• Note, the last entry for each session is 30 minutes earlier – 5:30 PM/12:30 AM

NB, during the last ten days of Ramadan, Laylatul Qadr, the Grand Mosque does not reopen for the evening session. Free cultural tours may be reduced or stopped altogether. We will advise further when we have more information for 2026.

Opening Hours at Wahat Al Karama

Whilst not part of the Grand Mosque complex, the adjacent memorial Wahat Al Karama is a hot spot with photographers seeking some of the best photos of the Grand Mosque over the reflective pond.

The Plaza area is open 24 hours a day, whilst the visitor centre operates daily from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Between 10:00 AM and 7:15 PM, a shuttle runs between the two attractions.

When to Visit the Grand Mosque Without Crowds

This is a challenging request; as you can imagine, the city’s most popular attraction is always crowded with tourists eager to capture a glimpse of the beautiful building.

If you visit in the summer months and aim to arrive before opening time, with your registration to visit already completed, you will find far fewer crowds. If you move quickly (not running!), you can get to the inner courtyard before the larger tour groups arrive.

Equally, if you have the patience to wait until after golden hour and past twilight, you will find the crowds thin out in the latter part of the evening.

Most tour buses operate from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, so it’s best to plan your visit around this schedule.

Navigating the new International Airport in Abu Dhabi (AUH)

Zayed International Airport (AUH airport code) is the renamed Abu Dhabi International Airport. The fresh new Terminal A opened its glistening doors in November 2023 and is now one of the world’s premier long-haul hubs*

Home to Etihad, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, here’s exactly what you can expect using this fabulous new airport.

Arrivals into Abu Dhabi Airport – Airlines and Terminals at AUH

Zayed International Airport – the gateway to the capital of the United Arab Emirates – sees around 150,000 flights a year coming and going from its runways and in 2024, saw 29 million people passing through teh new terminal.

Arrival at the Terminal Building in AUH

The vast majority of flights into AUH arrive via an air bridge directly to the terminal building. From there, you can expect up to a 10-minute walk back to transit or passport control and bag collection. Everything in the airport is sign posted in English and Arabic.

Electric buggies are available for those with mobility issues, or you could use Salam Meet & Assist (must be pre-booked and paid). Complimentary strollers are also available for people travelling with small children.

Leaving the airport?

Passport control is usually quite speedy and is largely now e-gates. Be careful to follow the instructions given by the passport control officer and answer any questions honestly.

Once through passport control, you will be required to scan any hand luggage you may have before collecting your main luggage from the baggage hall. Porters can help with your luggage for a small fee (payable in cash only – I believe AED 40 but we’ve not used them in a while!).

Note, if you can’t find your larger items like strollers and car seats on the luggage belt, look for the oversize baggage area near belt 2 and 8.

You will find a few cafes, newsagents, toilets, and cash machines in the arrivals hall to prepare you for your onward journey. Transport connection options are clearly signposted.

Are you onward connecting to a US destination?

One of the huge draw cards of using AUH as a transit hub is that you can pass through US Customs and Border Protection (U.S. CBP) IN THE UAE! Yes!

One of the few worldwide hub airports that can offer this service means no waiting at the other end, you’re straight to baggage collection, but it does mean you need to allow extra time before your flight.

Flying with a Disability or Differently Able?

AUH excels in accessibility. They participate in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard programme and offer a Sensory Space (near Gate D43) that can be pre-booked (max 1 hour, 6 family members per room).

It’s well worth checking out all the services on offer that may assist you or your loved ones who require special assistance with your journey.

Stay in AUH Airport or Go Sightseeing on a Long Layover in AUH?

So, let’s get down to it: if you’re transiting through AUH, do you stay at the airport or take a tour around town?

It can depend significantly on your arrival time, the length of your layover, and how many people are in your traveling party.

Here, we set out what you can expect to find inside the airport terminal building and what you can do nearby, should you wish to leave the airport.

Option 1: Staying in Abu Dhabi Airport to Transit

With under 5 hours in transit, this will be your preferred option.

The airport is fairly sized and contains many cafes, a few small designer shops, and larger ‘duty-free’ stores. There is a McDonald’s, Burger King, Costa Coffee, Boots Pharmacy, and WH Smith, to name but a few of the ‘big brand’ names you might internationally recognise—plus plenty of spots to pick up your souvenirs, ‘Dubai Chocolate’, or even designer goods duty-free.

Seating is ample, including plenty of quite spaces with recliner chairs.

Airport Lounges

The airport currently offers two paid lounges for guests travelling with any airline (Pearl Lounge for credit card/lounge card holders⁺ and Diamond Lounge, a paid luxury offering).

Customers flying Business or First with Etihad, or Gold Card holders and above with Etihad Guest can use the Etihad Business and First Lounges by invitation.

We’ll shortly publish another guide for you comparing the lounges as we work our way through them all!

⁺Our experience is that if you’re flying at a busy time of the year, such as over Eid or the start of the school holidays, forget the lounges. You’ll spend half your time queuing to get in, and then there’s very limited seating inside.

Zayed Airport is undoubtedly beautiful, airy, and spacious which is great for a building you’ll be ‘trapped in’ for many hours. However, personal opinion, we’re surprised up against fierce competition from airline hubs like Dubai, Doha and Singapore that there aren’t a few more leisure facilities and gardens built into the airport’s design.

Option 2: Sleep it off at a transit Hotel in AUH

There is presently only one transit hotel inside Zayed International Airport, the AUHotel. It is basic but comes with all the mod cons you want, including Wi-Fi, tea and coffee making, and, importantly, comfy beds and showers.

There are no other hotels in the immediate vicinity of the airport if you’re looking for a land side option within walking distance (a surprising design flaw, surely?)

That said, there are many options within a 10-minute drive on Yas Island. All hotels here will give you access to a pool, restaurants and an opportunity to walk about and stretch your legs.

Free Hotel stay for long layovers?

Unlike neighbouring Dubai, where Dubai Connect is offered by Emirates to long layover passengers as a complimentary service, no such service exists with Etihad in Abu Dhabi – but read on below for Option 4!

Option 3: Layover Activities in Abu Dhabi

Ideal if you have a stopover between the hours of 8:00 am and midnight, and at least 6 hours between flights

Although Visit Abu Dhabi encourages you to leave the airport with anything more than a 4-hour layover, realistically, you’d want at least 5-6 hours to comfortably make it through customs on either end (longer if you have a US flight as you clear US customs this side of the border).

Many major tourist attractions don’t open until 9:00 or 10:00 AM, so consider leaving the airport terminal carefully.

For a short and straightforward break in the sunshine, you could spend a couple of hours at Yas Bay enjoying the many restaurants and bars – its less than 10 minutes away in a taxi.

Alternatively, you could venture to the capital’s major attraction, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, just a 15-minute taxi away, and allow at least 60-90 minutes to explore.

A note on visas for short stays in Abu Dhabi

Many nationalities are entitled to a free UAE visa on arrival for 30 or 90 days. If you are not from one of these visa-on-arrival countries and need a tourist or transit visa (48 or 96 hours), you can apply here.

Transport For Short Stops

• With careful planning, you could use the free shuttle buses put on by Visit Abu Dhabi
• We have a detailed guide to Abu Dhabi transport options over here to help you with your onward journey; taxis are honestly the quickest and easiest way to get around on a short stop, but public transport does exist.

Option 4: Break up your travel with a 2-day break in Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi offers every type of accommodation you can imagine, from cost-effective chain hotels like the Premier Inn, to beyond 5-star luxury hotels like the Emirates Palace.

But why spend 2 days, not just one? Because Etihad will cover your hotel!

You read that right! Whilst they don’t offer a free city tour like other layover cities, Abu Dhabi rolls out the red carpet in a different way by giving you the option to stay for a minimum of 2 nights at one of their designated hotels.

Alternatively, stay up to 4 nights from their list of 3 to 5-star hotels and save 40% booking through Etihad.
