This article delves into the nuances of photographing this monumental masterpiece, offering insights and tips to ensure that every click not only captures an image but also narrates a tale of Emirati grandeur.
Photographing the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
Before we jump into photography tips, it’s important to note that visitors are welcome to take personal photographs at designated photos stops within the mosque, provided they respect the sanctity of the mosque.
- Those wishing to bring in professional cameras or filming equipment must apply for a permit through the media centre and pay the required fee.

- Absolute number 1 rule;ย remain respectfulย of where you are at all times.ย Avoid posing in large groups, making hand gestures or removing items of clothing required by the dress code. Follow the instructions of staff at all times.
Best Time to Take Your Photos at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
- For a quieter experience, we highly recommend you arrive for opening time at 9:00 a.m., or late evenings after Isha (final prayers) when there are fewer crowds and you can a achieve some wonderful moody, reflective shots.

How to take your photos
- Itโs really hard to get everything in one shot from up close! If you donโt have a permit for a professional wide-angle lens, you may need to use panorama or stitch features if your smartphone or camera has these.
- Take some time to appreciate the intricate details around you, instead of just focusing on the big picture. Take a closer look at the delicate marblework, the archways, and the beautiful stained-glass windows. No matter what time of day it is, the light will always interact with you in interesting ways.

Where to take your panoramic photos
- For the best panoramic shots of the mosque, head toย Wahat Al Karama (Oasis of Dignity), which is located across the freeway from the mosque.
- A complimentary shuttle service operates every 30 minutes between the mosque and Wahat Al Karama from 10:00 a.m. to 7:15 p.m., making the journey convenient and accessible
- Not only will you get to observe another part of the UAEโs very recent history, but you will also get some of the best views of the Grand Mosque over the stunning reflective pond.

- The best time to capture stunning photos is during the golden hour, but the mosque tends to be crowded in the early evenings.
- If you’re passionate about getting the perfect shot, stay until just before closing time, or wake up early and visit Wahat Al Karama at dawn on a clear day.
- It’s important to set expectations that completely clear days may be rare in Abu Dhabi; our experience driving past the mosque every day for over a decade is that you’ll get some haze and grey skies most mornings.

More Tips to Be Aware Of
- Beย prepared for the humidityย in the warmer summer months. Using anything more than a phone camera, let your camera warm up before you are ready to shoot. Keep the lens cap on until you are ready to start snapping to avoid camera fog.
- In the winter, you can get early morning fog in Abu Dhabi, which makes wonderful moody photos, but it’s hard to predict when this will happen and capture the perfect moment before the fog burns off. Patience is a virtue!
- For the ladies, it is advisable to wear something long under your abaya to reduce any accidental skin reveals and prevent breaching the sanctity of the mosque whilst you are focussing on your photography.
- Beware of others in your photos; local ladies, in particular, should not be photographed without permission.
