Crowds are low, and outside time is still limited, but the return of many expatriates and an influx of new joiners at this time of year still means there are plenty of special offers to enjoy around town.

Abu Dhabi’s average daytime maximum temperature in September is 37.4°C (99.3°F), with highs as much as 45°C (113°F) and average lows overnight down to 31°C (87.8°F). The “feels like” temperature, which takes into account humidity, can often be as high in September as it is in August.

In September, you should expect sea temperatures of 33.5°C (92.3°F) on average. Maximum sea temperatures are expected at 34.6°C (93.4°F) through to a minimum of 32.5°C (91.3°F) by the end of the month.

Abu Dhabi With Kids in September 2026

In September, you will still want to seek out indoor activities and water parks to keep cool. We recommend you try:

On Yas Island

• Ferrari World Abu Dhabi (indoor adrenaline theme park, most appropriate for ages 10+)
• Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi (indoor theme park appropriate to all ages)
• Yas Waterworld (Now expanded with 18 new attractions opening in summer 2025)
• SeaWorld Yas Island (indoor theme park for all ages)
• CLYMB Abu Dhabi (climbing walls and indoor flight chamber)

Elsewhere in the city

• Galleria Mall, Al Maryah Island, has the most comprehensive range of indoor activities, from bowling and trampolines at Extreme zone, to escape rooms, VR experiences, the LEGO Pop-in-and-play centre, and Caboodle, which little kids will love.
• After dark, you can explore the beautiful parks and playgrounds at Umm Al Emarat, or visit several spots dotted along the Corniche for evening relief for little ones.
• Younger children will like an evening stroll and play at the Circuit X Splash Park at Marsana, Al Hudayriyat Island – see the night beach deal above too to make a complete evening of it

Abu Dhabi Weather in August

Abu Dhabi’s average daytime maximum temperature in August is 40.2°C (140.4°F), with highs as much as a sweltering 48°C (118.4°F) and average lows overnight down to 32.8°C (91°F).

By mid-August, you really start to feel the humidity too, which sticks around until October. The “feels like” temperature, which includes the wind chill factor, can be significantly higher in August. It is not advisable to be out in direct sunlight during the peak of the day.

Although most days bring clear blue skies, sandstorms and a dusty haze are common in Abu Dhabi in August.

In August, you should expect sea temperatures on average of 33.8°C (92.8°F). Maximum sea temperatures are expected at 35°C (94°F) through to a minimum of 32.6°c (91.6°F).

It feels like dipping into a spa in August; many prefer a hotel with a nice chilled pool at this time of year to negate the steamy ocean temperatures – not to mention how hot the sand gets! August is not a highly recommended beach month!

Given the intense heat of August, stick to indoor activities or enjoy the coolest times of day: early morning and evening.

If you’re keen to soak up some rays, we recommend choosing a beach club that also offers the relief of a chilled swimming pool and a nearby bar. Some favourites include:

Day Trips From Abu Dhabi in August 2026

Some nearby experiences still within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi you could try include:

• A daycation to Al Maya Island & Resort – boats depart from near the Palace
• Visit the (indoor) eclectic car collection at Emirates National Auto Museum

If you’d like to head further afield, there’s plenty still going on down the road in Dubai. Some Dubai indoor ideas for August include:

Abu Dhabi With Kids in August 2026

Keeping the kids entertained in the heat can be tough. Why not try one of the indoor theme parks on Yas Island?

We recommend that tweens and thrill-seekers try CLYMB Abu Dhabi, an indoor rock climbing centre and indoor skydiving experience attached to Yas Mall.

You can also try the great Yas Island theme park collection of:

• Ferrari World
• Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi
• Yas Waterworld
• SeaWorld Abu Dhabi

Although Yas Waterworld is outdoors, you’ll still find it slightly refreshing with chilled water in August. Ferrari World, SeaWorld, and WB World are all indoor theme parks with only a couple of rides that protrude outside.

• Keeping it indoors, Galleria on Al Maryah Island is another top choice for a hot day. You can look for the small but hands-on and entertaining National Geographic Ultimate Explorer in Galleria Mall. They have also recently opened a huge entertainment hub with Game Over Escape rooms, Zero Latency virtual reality, Xtreme Zone indoor entertainment including bowling, Mission Play by Mattel, and Sparkys indoor entertainment venue.

• You could opt to cool down at the new Snow Abu Dhabi, Reem Mall where the temperature is always a chilly 2° C.

• For a little adrenaline rush, why not try the Velocity Slides at the World Trade Centre Mall?

You may also experience some days of high humidity in Abu Dhabi, though this doesn’t really kick in until August-September. The ‘feels like’ temperature will regularly reach 50°C in July.

In July, you should expect sea temperatures on average of 32.8°C (91°F). At the start of the month, sea temperatures average 30.8°C (89°F) through to a maximum of 34.9°C (93.1°F). If you’re coming for the beach weather in July, you’ll most definitely want to stay somewhere that chills their pool, and wear something to protect your feet!

Seeking an outdoor option? Hudayriyat Island is home to the city’s first night beach at Marsana East. Open from sunset to 10:00 pm on weekdays and midnight on weekends, beach-goers can swim under floodlights to enjoy the ever-so-moderately cooler weather of summer evenings in Abu Dhabi. Yas Waterworld also stays open throughout the summer and has air-conditioned cooling-off spaces as well as chilled water.

Minimum sea temperatures in June are 30.5°C (87.8°F) through to a bubbly warm maximum by month-end 32.7°c / 90°F – almost spa-like! Don’t worry, though; most resorts will have chillers in their pools, so you can still take a refreshing dip in June.

Abu Dhabi With Kids in June 2026

This is the perfect time of year to take on the Yas Island theme parks.

You can start your day at Yas Waterworld, then continue to cool off indoors at neighbouring Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi. Finish your evening over at Ferrari World and Yas Mall, where there are plenty of family dining options.

Our best recommendation when travelling with kids to Abu Dhabi in summer is to stay at one of the city’s best beachfront hotels so kids can enjoy a splash as part of your stay; top recommendations include:

• The St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort – or frankly, any of the Saadiyat Island resorts are simply superb.
• Emirates Palace is an indulgent luxury, but those slides and pool—wow!
• On a smaller budget, try Beach Rotana or off-island; any of the Yas hotels, such as the new Hilton Abu Dhabi on Yas Island with theme park tickets included, are a winner for summer vacays in Abu Dhabi – you can also check out the current ‘Kids Go Free‘ promotion for Yas Island, which runs from 1 June to 30 September.

Abu Dhabi enjoys wonderfully mild winter days in January. Usually crisp and clear, but rain and overcast days can be expected occasionally, too.

It can be deceptively cooler than you think in the winter, the coldest point of the year in Abu Dhabi. A beachy holiday and water-based ideas like Yas Waterworld may not be at their prime, but it’s perfect for outdoor exploration and getting beyond the city and into the desert.

Most of the crowds from Christmas – New Year break have left by the second week of January, and local kids are back at school, so it tends to be a quiet time to visit, a low season for hotels even though there’s pleasant weather.

Abu Dhabi Special Events in January 2026

There’s loads to keep you occupied in Abu Dhabi this January! Here are just some of the many wonderful events happening around the capital in January 2026.

Cultural & Heritage Events

• The Al Hosn Festival, a living celebration of Emirati history and culture, will take place at the Qasr Al Hosn from 17 January to 1 February 2026. For more details, click here.
• Catch the last few days of Liwa International Festival, concluding for the season on 3 January 2026 – Liwa Village
• The Sheikh Zayed Festival – held on purpose-built festival showgrounds in Al Wathba, an annual event that runs from late November through to 22 March 2026.
• Al Dhafra Festival – A traditional Bedouin Festival held in Abu Dhabi’s Western Region, near the town of Madinat Zayed. Events range from Saluki racing and falconry to the much-coveted Camel Mazayna, finding the region’s most beautiful camels. This really is one of the country’s most exciting and intriguing cultural events – you can learn more here.

Theatrical & Music events

• January is a great time for live music lovers in Abu Dhabi as Saadiyat Nights returns for another season. The lineup this year includes Diana Ross (January 9th), Ludovico Einaudi (January 10th), Lewis Capaldi (January 17th), John Mayer (January 24th), Max Richter (January 29th), Ricky Martin (January 31st), Mariah Carey (February 7th) and Bryan Adams (February 11th).
• Ballet fans can enjoy Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet performed by the Russian National Ballet at the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation on the 9th of January.
• Linkin Park’s ‘From Zero’ World Tour will hit the Etihad Arena on the 20th of January.
• Indian musical legend, A.R. Rahman, will be bringing his award-winning tunes to the Etihad Arena on the 23rd of January.
• Children can enjoy a stage adaptation of Julia Donaldson’s Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book at the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation on the 23rd and 24th of January.
• Friday 30th and Saturday 31st of January see Peppa Pig’s Fun Day Out on stage at the Etihad Arena.

Sporting Events

• Hit the water for the annual Dragon Boat Race Series on Hudayriyat Island, TBC.
• The Mubadala World Tennis Championship will begin on January 31st 2026 at the International Tennis Centre, Zayed Sports City.

Suggested Abu Dhabi Activities in January 2026

January is the perfect month for being outside; we recommend you look at some of the city’s cultural attractions. Why not try:

• Qasr Al Hosn – found in the centre of Abu Dhabi island. Home to Abu Dhabi’s original landmark, Al Hosn Fort, this is the perfect place to step back in time.
• A city boat tour is a fabulous way to see the city, made up of hundreds of islands; there are several departure locations and types of boats, from thrilling speed boats to more sedate traditional dhows to get out on the water and enjoy the fresh winter air.
• Kayak around the Louvre – not just a place to appreciate the artworks and history of civilization, the Louvre Abu Dhabi also offers unique kayaking tours beneath the brilliant arched ceiling and waterways of the museum.

Day Trips from Abu Dhabi in January 2026

January is a great time to visit the Oasis City of Al Ain. Situated approximately 160km southeast of the city, Al Ain in Abu Dhabi Emirate is considered the historic centre. With the lush greenery of Al Ain Oasis (A UNESCO World Heritage site), there are several forts and museums to explore here, plus the UAE’s highest peak to scale (in your car!) Jebel Hafeet.

You’ll find a good guide here on everything you can expect in Al Ain.

• An organized tour can be a great way to get around the sites of Al Ain without needing to self-drive.
• Check out the new Jebel Hafit Desert Park for some stunning glamping and camping options, as well as the opportunity to explore the 5000-year-old beehive tombs.
• Experience an overnight desert safari in the Al Katim Desert, outside of the city, where you can enjoy camel rides, sand sports, an Arabic buffet dinner and Bedouin hospitality – compare Abu Dhabi desert safari options here.

Abu Dhabi with Kids in January 2026

• A visit to see the new Jubail Mangrove Park on Al Jubail Island is a great way to get some fresh air, see the great outdoors, and learn more about the UAE’s unique marine life. If you get a rainy day, though, the National Aquarium is another great indoor choice for marine life lovers.

• Visit Al Hudayriyat Island, the city’s latest leisure destination to open to the public, which includes adrenaline activities from high ropes and a skating park through to the beautiful waterfront dining venue Marsana with a public beach and splash park on hand. An inflatable water park on the beach has joined the entertainment lineup this winter, along with Trail X, for trying out your mountain biking skills.

• Enjoy the city’s largest park, Umm al Emarat Park, on a family day out. Explore the botanical gardens and wadi’s through to Splash Park, enjoy a session at Bounce outdoors and a free cinema in the park on Thursday to Saturday evenings (10 AED park entry fee applies).

Note that its common for Yas Waterworld to close in January for annual maintenance – TBC for January 2026. There’s still plenty of theme park fun can be found on Yas Island at WB World Abu Dhabi, Ferrari World and SeaWorld Yas Island.

Its scale allows for monumental rooms and future adaptability—the installations will evolve over time rather than remain static.

The venue also incorporates regional themes, from desert-inspired forms to shifting environments that echo the UAE’s landscapes and biodiversity. Cooling temperatures, wide pathways, and quiet reflective zones make it particularly suitable for families, including younger children who often find the responsive elements fascinating.

Main Exhibits to Experience at teamLab Phenomena

Spanning over 17,000sqm, we’ll walk you through some of the most awe-inspiring exhibits presently open (note we’ve tried to simplify our explanations as those given in the teamLab app can be rather technical and don’t always align to what you’re experiencing, as some rooms have multiple rotating experiences – nothing is really signposted!)

Circulating Universe of Water Particles

This is where your journey into the darkness starts, in what feels like a phenomenal giant forest. Instantly slideable for kids (they’re apparently not allowed to, though), the display will then morph into the next exhibit, Flutter of Butterflies.

Morphing Continuum

The technical explanation is rather lengthy for this exhibit, but in short, there are many floating balls, and even if people disturb them, they will return to their original shape.

Biocosmos

Biocosmos is housed inside a giant sphere, where visitors walk across a suspended net through the center. You might have a small wait here as they control how many can enter at a time.

Those with acrophobia (and ornithophobia!) may prefer to skip this exhibit, or at the very least, cling to the edges! If you’re willing to brave the walk, expect to a 360-degree experience as flocks of birds fly past and elements completely surround you.

Graffiti Nature and Beating Earth

Back on planet Earth, let your little Picasso loose. This is the most interactive exhibit for your littles, where they can see their coloring creations come to life. The creatures they create will crawl into the earth, eventually multiplying when the environment is right, or they could consume one another.

Floating Microcosms

This is the main water exhibit, saved for the end of your journey! Be prepared to roll up the paints or skirt as giant Ovoids rise and fall around you. They repsond to touch and to one another, emitting colour and sound. Wade slowly and be at one with this incredible environment.

As mentioned, there is an app you can download in advance of your visit that provides more detail on the exhibits. But honestly, these explanations flew over the kids’ heads; just step into the darkness, and the staff will guide you on which way to walk and enjoy the immersion. Give each room plenty of time, as the exhibits can change within the same space.

Everything you need to know about visiting Abu Dhabi in December

Abu Dhabi is a truly magical place to be in December. Eid Al Etihad (National Day) festivities are always a colourful and exciting way to kick off the month, with the whole country painting itself in the national flag colours of red, green, white & black.

Schools break up locally in early December for the winter break, and plenty of hotels and shopping malls are decked with holiday decorations. You can experience festive markets as well as “winter wonderlands”, and this year, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will fall early in December.

A festive brunch in a nice hotel is an absolute must if you’re here over Christmas itself, or you can join in one of the many tree-lighting ceremonies, Santa Chases, or gingerbread house-making classes across the city.

There are carol services in church and out in the desert for anyone wanting to sing some good old-fashioned carols. Or, for a much more local traditional experience, why not attend a camel beauty pageant? You heard right; read on!!

In December, you should expect sea temperatures of 24.9°C (76.8°F) on average. Maximum sea temperatures are expected at 27.4°C (79.3°F) through to a minimum of 22.5°C (74.4°F) by month-end.

Abu Dhabi Special Events in December 2026

Annual Events in Abu Dhabi During December

• National Day (Eid al Etihad) traditionally 2 & 3 December: 2025 will mark 54 years since the unification of the United Arab Emirates; previously called National Day, the event was briefly renamed to Union Day, and it seems they have now settled on the Arabic name Eid Al Etihad – meaning ‘Celebration of the Union’. Due to the 2nd and 3rd falling midweek, the public holiday has been moved to the 1st and 2nd December for 2025 – learn more here.
• This Eid Al Etihad will also mark the official opening of the brand new Zayed National Museum, which is set to open its doors to the public on 3 December.
• The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is held annually on the Yas Marina Circuit, Yas Island. This event typically occurs in late November, but the busy events schedule sees the annual season closer, occurring from 4 – 7 December this year. Make sure you grab your tickets to the GP early, as the event does sell out, or reserve your seat at a Grand Prix Brunch for a unique way to experience the race.
• Ferrari HP Esports Series 2024 Grand Final will take place at Ferrari World on December, 3 2025 – alongside the Ferrari World Supercharged Fan Zone from 4 to 7 December 2025
• Al Dhafra Festival – A traditional Bedouin Festival held in Abu Dhabi’s Western Region, near the town of Madinat Zayed. Events range from Saluki racing and falconry to the much-converted – Camel Mazayna, finding the region’s most beautiful camels. This really is one of the country’s most exciting and intriguing cultural events – you can learn more here. This year’s festival will run from the 27 October 2025 until the 22 January 2026.
• Sheikh Zayed Festival – Held nightly on the outskirts of the city in a purpose-built showground, this annual event showcases local culture. Open from 1 November and throughout the winter, this is a fabulous way to experience local culture during your time in the UAE.
• The Mother of the Nation Festival will bring a variety of live acts and other entertainment around the Emirate, with events centred on Abu Dhabi Corniche from 10 December 2025 until 4 January 2026. For more details, click here
• Liwa International Festival, which takes place around Liwa Village in the Empty Quarter from 12 December 2025 to 3 January 2026. This is a unique desert event with desert motorsport action at Tal Moreeb, one of the world’s largest sand dunes. Winter Festivities in Abu Dhabi 2026

In December, Abu Dhabi usually hosts a wide array of Christmas events, from Santa Chase events to Christmas markets, various tree-lighting ceremonies, the Winter Wonderland showcase on Al Maryah Island, and a big Christmas family event on Yas Island.

• Breakfast with Santa at Le Royal Meridien. Join the big man in red whilst indulging in a delicious breakfast at the cosy Royal Meridien on Saturdays and Sundays during December, plus they have a Brunch with the Grinch every Saturday – buy tickets on Virgin Tickets
• There will be Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremonies throughout the city during December. Along with tree lighting ceremonies, there’s likely to be lots of gingerbread house-making workshops around town – see our detailed Christmas guide to Abu Dhabi for more information on venues and times.
• Enjoy the Mirbad Express Winter Popup at Erth from 4 pm to midnight daily from 5to 14 December – 85AED entry including ice skating.
• This year, Yas Winter Fest will take place at Yas Gateway Park North from December 12 to 21. This family-friendly festive event will feature loads of winter-themed fun.
• ‘Winterfest’ also comes to Ferrari World in December and will stay until early January. There will be festive shows, arts and crafts, and gingerbread decorating workshops (book in advance to avoid disappointment).
• Step into the magic at Warner Bros World’s Winter Spectacular from 6 December to 11 January.
• The ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon takes place on 13 December 2025 – City
• Fontana Circus will continue their awe-inspiring run in the Fontana Circus Tent at Marina Mall.
• The Arabian Days Festival will take place from 13-15 December 2025 celebrating the richness of the arabic language, with storytelling and writing workshops – Manarat al Saadiyat
• The legendary Rod Stewart will be rousing audiences at the Etihad Arena on the 17 December, with the renowned Arijit Singh performing two days later on 19 December.
• NB Christmas Day, Thursday the 25th of December 2025, is NOT a public holiday in the UAE. All shops and businesses will trade as normal. Restaurant Christmas Day brunches book up early, so make sure that you book in advance, or try a Christmas Eve brunch.
• Hussain Al Jassmi and Kadim Al Sahir will bring an unforgettable night of music and poetry to the Etihad Arena on 27 December.

Abu Dhabi With Kids in December 2026

This is definitely the kids’ time of year in Abu Dhabi! From Mall Santas and festive winter wonderlands, our top pick for an action-packed outing is Ferrari World.

During December, as well as their fabulous fun adrenaline rides with an Italian motoring theme, they run Winter Wonderland, full of extra shows and events over the December school holidays – you’ll find similar festive celebrations this year also at SeaWorld and Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi Winter Spectacular

Close to the city, there are many leisure facilities to enjoy on Al Hudayriat Island, including Circuit X with a skate park, high ropes course, BMX track and splash park, and the newly opened Surf Abu Dhabi. There’s also a free beach and cycling track here, the heritage trail and even some glamping options, just a stone’s throw from the city.

For more nature-based experiences, check out Jubail Mangrove Park, on the outskirts of the city between Saadiyat Island and Yas Island. Enjoy the wonders of the mangroves in this boardwalk park, or take a kayak to get up close to this amazingly tranquil experience.

The average maximum daytime temperature in November is 29.5°C (85°F), although some days can still reach 37.4°C (99.3°F). Nights are balmy, with average lows of 24.2°C (75.6°F). Most days are sunny, although there may be some misty starts.

November is arguably the best time to visit the beach in Abu Dhabi. Cooler temperatures make sunbathing and playing in the sand much more comfortable, and average sea temperatures of around 28.5°C (83.3°F) make for a refreshing swim!

Abu Dhabi’s average daytime maximum temperature in October is 33.9°C (93°F), with highs as much as 41.6°C (106.9°F) and average lows overnight down to 28°C (82.4°F).

In October, you should expect average sea temperatures of 31.6°C (88.9°F). Maximum sea temperatures are expected to be at 33°C (90.3°F) through to a minimum of 30.2°C (87.5°F) by month’s end.

Keeping teenagers happy and entertained isn’t always easy. Even the most amicable are prone to uttering ‘I’m bored’ every now and again. The good news is that it’s difficult for even the grumpiest of teenagers not to have a good time in Abu Dhabi.

With world-class theme parks, awesome shopping experiences, incredible dining opportunities, oodles of culture, and unique natural environments, Abu Dhabi really does have it all for an incredible family vacation.

In this article, we highlight what your teens and tweens shouldn’t miss on their trip to Abu Dhabi – plus loads of other ideas for keeping them entertained in the United Arab Emirates!

Theme Park & Indoor Fun in Abu Dhabi With Teens

Yas Island Theme Parks

Abu Dhabi is blessed with some of the best theme parks in the world, all located on the fun-filled Yas Island. These are not to be missed by any adrenaline-seeking teen!

• Ferrari World Abu Dhabi – Abu Dhabi’s oldest theme park and home to the fastest roller coaster in the world – Formula Rossa. Perhaps the kids can also persuade you to take them out for a spin on the streets of Abu Dhabi in a real Ferrari (available at extra cost).

• Yas Waterworld – the region’s leading water park with over 40 different rides and experiences. Teen favourites include the Falcon’s Falaj, where they can whoosh through tubes on an inflatable with their friends and surf the world’s largest sheet wave at Bubble Barrel.

• Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi – Whether your teens are Batman fans or still like to indulge in Scooby Doo, Warner Brother’s World promises fun for the whole family. It’s the region’s biggest indoor theme park and features 29 exhilarating rides and attractions. The addition of a Harry Potter World has been announced, but no opening date, yet!

• The newly opened SeaWorld Yas Island is a great place for your nature-loving teens to find out more about life under the sea. In addition to live exhibits, there are various rides and attractions guaranteed to make your day truly memorable. Budding marine biologists might also enjoy a visit to the National Aquarium at Al Qana. Opened in 2021, the Aquarium is home to 46,000 animals.

• Not a theme park, per se, but another adrenaline-boosting destination also located on Yas Island is CLYMB. This indoor climbing centre also features the largest indoor skydiving chamber in the world.

Note that height and age restrictions apply to many rides at the theme parks listed above. Always check these out in advance to avoid any disappointment when you arrive.

Other Abu Dhabi Theme Parks

Whilst Yas Island undoubtedly has the most theme park action in Abu Dhabi, there are a couple of new venues that are also worth mentioning for the tween and teen age group.

Snow Abu Dhabi

In the heat of the desert, it might seem crazy that a whole theme park is dedicated to snow. The whimsical Snow Abu Dhabi, is, however, a great place to escape the sizzling temperatures outside and have a really ‘cool’ time.

There’s surprisingly no ski slope in Snow Abu Dhabi (sister venue to Ski Dubai), but there is a pretty impressive snow park with fun activities like toboggans and bumper tubes.

Under 14’s need an adult with them, but kids 14+ can come with their mates.

Adrenark

Adrenark Adventure is the largest indoor adventure park of its type in the Middle East. It offers climbing walls, LED slides, bungee jumping rope courses, thrilling rides, and numerous other attractions. This is a great place for thrill-seeking kids of all ages, with plenty of more challenging attractions than your average indoor play centre that will appeal to tweens and younger teens.

Shopping with Teens in Abu Dhabi

The best shopping mall for teens who love their fashion brands is The Galleria, located on Al Maryah Island. Here, you will find all of your teen’s high-street favourites and international brands that you may not find at home. There’s also a high-end designer area for a bit of style inspiration.

If your teen is more into ethnic handicrafts than keeping up with the latest fashion trends, the WTC Mall, just behind Abu Dhabi Corniche, has a souk section and shops selling more traditional attire.

There are also numerous tailor shops in the downtown area where you can select fabric and have items made to measure at a reasonable cost, giving your teen the chance to create an outfit all of their own.

Outdoor Adventures with Teens & Tweens in Abu Dhabi

Whilst the summer months in Abu Dhabi are not terribly conducive to outdoor activities, there are plenty of winter adventures teens will love.

Hit the beach

With almost 365 days of sunny weather, Abu Dhabi’s beaches are a big draw. There are several public beaches in Abu Dhabi, but for something truly special, your teens will love a day out at a beach club – come and see which ones we think are the best!

A Desert Safari Experience

No visit to the UAE is complete without a trip to the desert. There are a variety of safaris on offer, although most include camel riding, an Arabic barbecue, and some form of entertainment like belly dancing or a twirling tanoura dance.

Sometimes, there are opportunities to learn more about local arts and crafts and have a greater ecological focus, whilst others are all about the adrenaline activities in the desert, with thrilling dune bashing rides and the option to hire sand boards, dune buggies and fat bikes.

For a truly unique experience, try a desert glamping experience in Abu Dhabi; from star gazing at the foot of Jebel Hafit to converted campervans on the beach, there are plenty of unique overnight experiences to be enjoyed in Abu Dhabi’s great outdoors.

Hit the track

Even if you’re not visiting during the Grand Prix, there are still plenty of ways you can get the thrill of the race. From taking on the Go Kart track to a lap on the circuit with an expert driver (some age limits apply), there are loads of racing-related activities to keep your speed demon happy.

Anyone can join in on an open night at Yas Marina Circuit. You can cycle, jog, or walk around the Grand Prix track every Monday and Wednesday throughout the year (except GP week). Entry is free for anyone wishing to go around the track on foot. If you want to cycle around the track, there are a limited number of free bikes you can pick up at the track, but you can also pay to hire a higher-spec bike to really test your skills.

If you love cycling, there are plenty of other outdoor options. An easy cycling ride is along the Corniche, Abu Dhabi’s beachside boulevard. You’ll find bikes for rent, as well as eScooters for a fun way to zip about town.

Alternatively, those with a need for speed should head over to sporting hub Al Hudayriyat Island, where they will find a cycling track, a BMX track in Circuit X and for those up to the challenge, a new mountain biking circuited, Trail X. There are several biking shops on Hudayriyat Island that can help you out with bike hire too.

Hit the water

Fun in the water might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a city in the desert, but Abu Dhabi is blessed with numerous beaches and mangroves, serving a whole host of unique water-based experiences.

Take in the sights on a cruise

A fantastic way to see the city is to take a cruise along the Corniche. This can be done as part of a bigger group on a traditional dhow or by hiring a private speedboat. The second option gives you more flexibility and the option to stop and have a barbecue on one of the secluded beaches close to the capital, something that many people, teens included, seem to enjoy.

If you’d rather take a tour around Yas Island with its impressive marina, green mangroves and desert islands, we recommend using The Yellowboats, who pride themselves on providing a safe but exciting trip.

Kayak through the mangroves

While cruises get you close to nature, kayaking can get you closer. Our favourite water-based experience is kayaking the eastern mangroves.

Here, you will see a variety of birdlife (including flamingoes) and find sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Kayaking at the Jubail Mangroves is another chance to see a variety of marine species, perhaps even turtles or dolphins, as well as enjoy being out on the water.

Other experiences include kayaking under the magnificent dome of the Louvre; this is the perfect way to actively see the building’s impressive architecture as well as getting the endorphins flowing.

Let your teen be the captain

Sometimes teens just want to be in control and letting them be ‘captain’ for the day is one way of giving them some responsibility. Of course, you will be there to support them if anything gets too tricky!

While there are many places to hire boats in Abu Dhabi, Rhino Rides at Eastern Mangroves provide the most accessible boats for teens. Experienced guides provide a crash course in driving before taking you through the national park in convoy.

Surfing and wakeboarding in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is not well known for its breakers, and surfing in the sea is limited to rough days at Saadiyat Beach. On the other hand, most water sports providers offer wakeboarding. There are, however, closely monitored artificial opportunities to try both.

At Al Forsan International Sports Resort, a variety of water sports are on offer in the resort’s huge man-made lakes. It is the first sports resort in the Middle East to introduce the water cable system. The system pulls participants around the lakes on their chosen board or ski, giving them the opportunity to develop their skills in a safe environment before they take to the open sea.

There are also chances to surf at Yas Waterworld in the Bubbles Barrel, and a brand new surfing centre and wave pool is set to open on Hudayriat Island by the end of 2023. (In early 2024, we still await the final opening date for Surf Abu Dhabi, which will be the largest artificial wave park in the world).

Other water sports

At some beaches, you will find banana boats, parasailing, jet skis, and other water sports options. We would exercise caution and check the terms and conditions of your insurance policies before committing to any of these activities.

Be a ninja!

Very active teens will love OCR Park with its grown-up obstacle course. Ducking and diving over walls and under nets will really make them feel like a real ninja! Paintballing and Archery

Over 10s can try their hand at paintballing at Al Forsan International Sports Resort. The outdoor arena mirrors the natural landscape, offering a realistic backdrop. There are a variety of exciting scenarios on offer, from protecting the saloon from bandits to rescuing a hostage from a rival team. Whichever you choose, it’s sure to get the adrenaline pumping!

Tee off (with) Mum and Dad

Abu Dhabi is rapidly gaining a reputation as a golfing holiday destination, and with almost constant sunshine and no fewer than 5 world-class golf clubs, it’s easy to see why. There are plenty of opportunities for teens to get involved in the golfing fun.

One venue that has been tried and tested is Abu Dhabi City Golf Club, where private lessons are possible in the club’s junior academy. You can also try your hand at some fun games at GoGolf, part of the club’s driving range.

If your teen is not quite ready to take to the course, there are various golf simulators around the city, such as those at Performance Golf in Zayed Sports City. These provide a great opportunity for your teen to develop their skills, especially during the warmer months.

The Tourist Highlights for Tweens & Teens in Abu Dhabi

The highlights of your tween or teens’ trip will really depend on their interests. It would, however, be sacrilege not to visit what we would call the ‘Big 4’ tourist attractions of Abu Dhabi:

• Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque – the most visited building in the UAE – be mindful of dress code for entering the mosque; from the age of puberty, girls need to be covered entirely from wrist to ankle and will need to wear a headscarf.

• Qasr al Watan – the country’s stunning Presidential Palace is a must for anyone interested in art and architecture.

• Louvre Abu Dhabi – the museum is not huge but contains some very important artefacts. On the whole, it feels like a manageable sampler collection of Earth’s history and culture and is great for teenagers eager to learn more.

• Qasr Al Hosn – often thought of as the birthplace of the UAE, this coral stone fort and cultural centre is well worth a visit. As well as an interactive museum, there’s the opportunity to get hands-on with some local crafts, take part in a coffee-drinking ceremony at the adjacent House of the Artisans, and see mesmerising traditional performances.

Hot/Rainy Day Retreats in Abu Dhabi For Teens

There are some classic indoor retreats in Abu Dhabi. While most teens have no doubt outgrown the typical soft plays, there’s an abundance of indoor arcades and action areas that will keep your older kids busy.

Escape Rooms

A growing trend in the UAE and indeed, around the world is trying to find your way out of an escape room. There are a number of Escape rooms in Abu Dhabi. Some are much scarier than others!

Prison Island is the most family-friendly in Abu Dhabi Mall, whereas Dark Room and Haunted Activity may be a bit too scary for most teenagers and a fair few mums and dads! Note that age restrictions do apply.

Cinemas

Who doesn’t love catching the latest movie with oodles of popcorn and lashings of soda? In Abu Dhabi, you can take the cinema experience to the max.

There are cinemas in every shopping Mall, but the likes of Yas Mall and the Galleria Mall contain plush multiplexes with some truly unique cinema experiences.

Vox cinema’s ‘Theatre’ offers fully reclining seats in private booths and the opportunity to enjoy a three-course a la carte meal whilst you watch the film. For more information about Theatre, click here.

Arcades & VR

Gone are the days when your sproglett wants to jump around in ball pits, but most teenagers are still partial to a few arcade games. Many ‘play centres’ around Abu Dhabi contain soft play for younger children and a gaming zone for tweens and teens.

The newly opened Pixoul Gaming in Al Qana offers a unique new experience for esports lovers, whilst there are often eSport tournaments at various venues around the city.

Orange Hub is another popular indoor choice for teenagers, found in Al Wadha Mall. They have a variety of VR and arcade games.

For a more cerebral approach to gaming, head to one of Abu Dhabi’s board game cafes, where you can find a huge selection of board and card games. Play as a family, or perhaps find some new board-game crazy friends to play with.

One of the best game cafes is Table Top Tavern, located near Sheikha Fatima Park. As well as board games, you’ll find lots of tasty treats, including a whole host of cakes and shakes.

Get into a good book

Abu Dhabi Children’s Library is designed for children up to the age of 14. While many areas are aimed at younger children, there is an awesome studio space where teens can record their own podcasts, do some coding, or make their own movies.

When we talk about brunch in Abu Dhabi, we don’t mean a late-morning combination of breakfast and lunch. Oh, no, Brunch in Abu Dhabi is so much more than that.

From 1 to 4 p.m. on a Saturday, restaurants across the city are transformed into lavish banqueting zones. Here, you can enjoy an unlimited buffet with a whole host of international delicacies.

There are stunning starters, tasty main courses, and delectable desserts. Some brunches are famed for their amazing cheese rooms, whilst others are favoured for their live cooking stations or entertainment.

If you are new to Abu Dhabi and the Middle East region, here are a few things for your teens to keep in mind:

Modesty is required in your wardrobe choices. Whilst the city is becoming a lot more liberal with Western-style clothing, there are some dress code pointers for teens in Abu Dhabi to be aware of:

• A full head covering is not required for non-Muslim girls unless you are entering religious buildings and certain government buildings.
• Bathers and bikinis are permitted in the right setting but don’t forget to be sun-smart too.
• Away from the beach/resort setting, avoid short-shorts, transparent clothing and anything that leaves little to the imagination. Shoulders and knees covered is a very loose rule for when you’re out and about sightseeing, but teens should feel free to dress to the weather.
• Don’t forget hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and a good dose of deodorant!

Also, just a reminder for your teens to keep their behaviour in check too; no profanities, rude gestures, or offensive slogan t-shirts. Petty crime is almost unheard of, but do take sensible precautions and keep an eye on everyone’s belongings.

Unfortunately, some men do tend to stare at girls/women in the UAE – usually harmless, but another reason to remind your teen girls of sensible clothing choices for the region.
