Looking for some hopping good fun to celebrate Easter this year?

Although the United Arab Emirates is a Muslim country, make no mistake, just like Christmas, Easter is a big celebration that is observed by the local expat community.

Whether you are still a big believer in the Easter Bunny, want to attend a church service, or look at it as a fantastic family opportunity to gather with your loved ones, there’s always plenty going on around Abu Dhabi to help you celebrate Easter in the sunshine.

Easter Dates for 2026

For Catholics, Easter Sunday will be observed on 5 April 2026, whilst Orthodox Christians will observe the occasion on 12 April 2026.

Unlike the past few years, the Catholic Easter no longer coincides with the Holy Month of Ramadan.

While both religious events are based on lunar cycles, Ramadan advances by approximately 10 days each year, whereas Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the Spring Equinox. We are looking a couple of decades away before we need to worry about when Easter and Ramadan will coincide again!

Here’s the forward outlook for important religious dates in Abu Dhabi:

Weather in Abu Dhabi at Easter

The weather around Easter is traditionally among the best of the year for visitors to Abu Dhabi, with exceptionally nice conditions for sun-seekers.

Abu Dhabi doesn’t have a spring per se, but March and April are as close as you’ll get when the daytime highs are hot, while early mornings and evenings are still pleasant to be outside.

With Easter falling in early April this year, you can expect warm weather in Abu Dhabi. Daytime highs can reach the low 40s °C, while overnight temperatures drop to an average of 24.6°C (76°F).

It is advisable to avoid the peak of the day outdoors in April in Abu Dhabi; if you are out and about, apply plenty of sunscreen and bring your hat and sunglasses.

Water temperatures in Abu Dhabi at Easter remain a little on the cool side, though those from cooler climates will likely find it delightful, with water temperatures around 25°C. (Most large resorts will have temperature-controlled pools if it’s still a little chilly for your liking at Easter time in Abu Dhabi.)

Easter also often coincides with international school breaks, further increasing the popularity of visiting at this time of year. Locally, the spring break will occur in March this year, but nonetheless, the pleasant weather of April brings big crowds (under usual circumstances; this won’t be the case in 2026).

Always a regular on our favourite brunch list, given the size of the spread they put on every week, this year they will hold a special Easter edition on the Saturday. This will include Easter crafts and games for the kids, along with an egg hunt, mascot visits, and a magic show.

Ramadan at Umm Al Emarat Park will offer a serene setting for families, featuring Oud Music, tanoura shows, and storytelling sessions throughout the month.

Come to the park at sunset to see the traditional firing of the cannon, then enjoy the Ramadan Garden Iftar menu curated in collaboration with Emirati Chef Mariam Al Mansoori.

It is important to remember that Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection and togetherness. While these Abu Dhabi Ramadan events are by no means limited to the Muslim community, please be mindful that you are attending a religious occasion in an Islamic country.

Whilst it may come across as ‘business as usual’ these days during the Holy Month in Abu Dhabi, please be mindful when attending a Ramadan event that you are; dress appropriately for the occasion and refrain from eating and drinking around those fasting until after sunset.

2026 Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan Ramadan Tournament

This popular family event with millions in prize money up for grabs is back this Ramadan.

There’s a new location this year and a renaming, but the same concept in conjunction woith the Abu Dhabi Sports Council. Competition will take place at the Sheikh Zayed Festival grounds in Al Wathba and covering 15 sports.

Events in 2026 will take place from 23 February to 17 March 2026.

Navigating your way around Saadiyat

Louvre Abu Dhabi

The first internationally recognised museum to open in Abu Dhabi, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, takes visitors on a journey through humanity, with carefully curated collections providing an overview of global civilisation across the ages.

In addition to the permanent galleries that link cultures through specific aspects of development, temporary exhibitions often have a regional focus. There is also a thoughtfully designed children’s museum, with hands-on activities perfect for younger visitors.

The building itself is also an architectural phenomenon. It has an enormous aesthetic appeal, which drives photographers and influencers to visit.

Note that a dress code is observed in respect of local decency rules and that photos should not be taken of individuals without their permission.

Entrance Fee: AED 70 for adults (under 18s free, various other discounts apply)

Abrahamic House

Although not actually a museum, the collection of religious buildings here is well worth a stop on the itinerary of culture-seekers traveling through Abu Dhabi.

Abrahamic House brings together the Ahmed El-Tayeb Mosque, the Moses Ben Maimon Synagogue, and St Francis Church. Each is a cubic building of the same size but exhibits the architectural characteristics characteristic of its building type.

Entrance Fee: It’s free to take a group tour (though this should be pre-booked; walk-ins may not be accommodated)

Guggenheim (coming soon)

The country’s first modern and contemporary art museum will feature artists from across the globe with an emphasis on West Asia, Northern Africa, and southern Asia.

Surrounded on three sides by the waters of the Arabian Gulf, the building will also serve as a man-made breakwater and stand out as a work of art in its own right.

Originally intended to open alongside the Louvre nearly a decade ago, the project was delayed by substantial cutbacks in 2010, and it’s now scheduled to open in 2026.

Zayed National Museum

The National Museum of the UAE honors the legacy of the country’s founding father, Sheik Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. It will have six permanent galleries, temporary exhibits, and the Al Masar garden.

This section will cover the country’s archaeological heritage, its coastal connections to pearling, fishing, and trade, its role in national identity, the spread of Islam, and the impact of new technology.

Manarat Al Saadiyat

The first building in the Saadiyat Culture District has long served as a showroom for the island’s development, but it now stands for so much more.

Entrance Fee: Can vary by event, but most are free public events

TeamLab Phenomena

Home to 25 immersive digital works, this modern museum offers the chance to walk through art in a sensory experience like no other.

Entrance Fee: Adult tickets cost 150 AED; children ages 4-12 pay 50 AED; children under four enter for free. Weekday evenings are open to adults only from 6:00 PM.

Museums in other areas of the city of Abu Dhabi

Qasr Al Hosn

Often referred to as the birthplace of Abu Dhabi, this historic fort and museum is located in downtown Abu Dhabi, on the same block as the Cultural Foundation and the House of Artisans (both included in your entrance fee).

Falcon Hospital

As well as getting the chance to see behind the scenes at this internationally renowned avian hospital, there is also a small museum of artefacts showcasing the history of falconry that you can see as part of a guided tour of this fascinating cultural attraction.

Entrance Fee: 170 AED per adult plus VAT for a 2-hour tour. Tours must be booked in advance via the website.

Qasr al Watan

The presidential palace is not really a museum, but it does contain collections of gifts presented to the rulers of the UAE by foreign dignitaries. It provides a unique record of the recent history of the UAE, and is a beautiful building to visit in its own right. It is also the venue for many international diplomatic receptions and as such, a place where history is literally being made.

Entrance Fee: From AED 65 for adults and from AED 30 for children.

Heritage Village

Situated on the marina breakwater, this small village is run by Abu Dhabi Culture. Built in the traditional style, the village includes houses and workshops featuring a wide variety of exhibits from Abu Dhabi’s past. There’s also a small-holding area with livestock, a few market stalls and a great view back over the water to Abu Dhabi Corniche.

It’s now a little dated and often overlooked in favour of the larger, newer developments around the city, but it is still worth a visit for those who want to experience aspects of the local culture firsthand without the gloss.

There are honestly better spots these days to get your cultural fix, but since many tours still stop here, we think it’s important to still include this little slice of UAE history.

Al Maqta’a Museum

Freshly renovated and reopened in May 2025, this former Customs House was built in the 1950s to monitor entry to Abu Dhabi when the first causeway was constructed to Abu Dhabi island (Now dwarfed by the much larger Sheikh Zayed Bridge).

Although there were no further customs checks upon unification, the building has been preserved for its socio-cultural importance as a shared effort between the Department of Culture and Tourism and the Abu Dhabi Police.

The exhibits focus on policing across decades and will, in due course, feature seasonal activations.

Entrance Fee: It is free to visit Al Maqta’a Museum.

Other Historical Places of Interest in Abu Dhabi

Not all museums per se, but other buildings and monuments of interest include:

• Look for the modern heritage plaques at about 60 sites across the city.
• Wahat Al Karama is opposite the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque. This small memorial contains not only a monument to the UAE’s martyred soldiers but also a small information centre well worth a stop on an Abu Dhabi city tour.

Museums in the Abu Dhabi Emirate

Beyond the city, there are several other places of interest that history buffs will want to look out for. Many are located in Al Ain, which we cover in more detail here. The highlights include:

• Al Ain Museum recently reopened after a closure spanning many years. This museum houses many of the artefacts found in the Hili Archaeological site (part of the UNESCO sites of Al Ain), dating back to the Neolithic period.
• Al Ain Palace Museum (temporarily closed) – the former residential home of the founding father, Sheikh Zayed. This museum offers a fascinating look at the Al Nayhan family tree and insight into what it would have been like to grow up as part of the royal family.

• Qasr al Muwaiji – a closer look at the childhood home of Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed, 2nd President of the UAE, and the previous administration office for the Ruler’s Representative of Al Ain. Walk through both the historic fort and visit the modern exhibition centre telling the story of the fort and its inhabitants,
• Al Jahili Fort – one of the largest forts in the UAE. Built in 1891, the fort was built by Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan to protect local date farmers. The building now houses a photographic collection by British Explorer Wilfred Thesiger, which is well worth a look.
• Zayed Desert Learning Center –This multi-floor learning centre is found within Al Ain Zoo. It covers a fascinating journey from the country’s geology to present-day sustainability.

Emirates Auto Museum

A genuinely unique experience housed in a pyramid-style structure, around 45 minutes from the city as you head into the Liwa Desert. Explore Sheikh Hamdan’s quirky collectibles, including the world’s largest SUV (housing a 4-bedroom apartment!) and the World’s largest caravan!

You can combine a trip here with a drive to Al Dhafra/Western Region or make it a simple half-day trip from the city, though you’ll need access to a car.

Delma Museum

Tucked away on the remote Delma Island in the country’s Western Region, approximately 2 hours west of the city, is the small but historically significant former pearl merchants’ home. Also known as Bait Al Muraikhi, it has been transformed into a treasure trove of finds from the 19th and 20th centuries.

It is open daily, 9:00 am to 2:30 pm (Sun-Thu) and 9:00 am to 12:00 pm on Fridays.

Al Dhafra Fort Museum

The Al Dhafra Fort museum honours the 20 or so nomadic and settled tribes that once defended the region. The local area is dotted with the remains of forts and guard towers built by these tribes, some of which can be visited after a trip to the museum; note that most offer no facilities.

Open daily from 9.00 am until 2.30 pm (12.00noon on Friday)

Museums in Dubai & The Northern Emirates

Other Dubai’s Heritage Sites

In addition, if you’d like to dig below the glossy surface of Dubai, you could also work in stops in your itinerary to:

• Al Ahmadiya School – Dubai’s oldest formal educational institution.
• Majlis Ghorfat Umm Al Sheif – The former home of Sheikh Rashid bin Saaed Al Maktoum
• Heritage House– Traditional house in an old neighbourhood that gives an insight into life in times gone by.
• Jumeirah Fishing Harbour – a unique and tranquil coastal setting in a suburban area of the city with some of the city’s best underrated seafood dining.
• Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood – Stunning historical district full of traditional houses and winding alleyways. Many of the houses have been converted into art galleries, museums (as mentioned above), and cafes.

Note that you are highly unlikely to find a commerical tour that will encompass these sites of interests; you’ll need to self-plan your own guided tour with a private driver or hire a car in the UAE and create your own itinerary.

Sharjah

Sharjah is often referred to as the cultural capital of the UAE. If you are interested in learning more about Islamic culture, consider dedicating a day or two of your trip to the UAE. The most notable stops in Sharjah include:

• Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization – A comprehensive collection showcasing Islamic art, science, culture, and history from across the Muslim world.

What About Children During Ramadan In Abu Dhabi?

Younger children, especially those under six years old, are not expected to participate in fasting, Muslim and non-Muslim.  Pre-pubescent children between seven and 12 years old may start to observe fasting for short periods at a time. On reaching puberty, participation by all Muslims (with some exceptions mentioned below) is required.

Schools in Abu Dhabi will start later and finish earlier during Ramadan. Individual schools will advise opening hours but are generally restricted to a maximum of 5-hour days. (The education authority ADEK has capped school hours this year to a maximum of 5 hours between 8:30 AM and 3:30 PM)

You should see no change for younger children who attend nursery or playgroups, though hours may be reduced.  Children should be fed as usual when they are hungry and dressed appropriately for the weather.

Exceptions To Fasting

There are many circumstances under which a Muslim can be exempted from fasting. This includes pregnant women, diabetics, breastfeeding mums, women who are menstruating, the sick, and those who are of old age. The basic premise is that you should not participate if it harms your health.

For a non-Muslim who is pregnant or breastfeeding, you should still avoid eating or drinking in public; likewise, for children between six and 12 years, it may be allowed, but even Muslims will do this in a discreet and private way so as not to offend others.

If you are travelling through one of the country’s major international airports, you will see full food services operating as travellers are exempt from fasting. (In case you are wondering, Muslims make up any fasting days while travelling on a later date).

Interesting Facts About Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a national landmark and one of the world’s largest mosques, welcoming worshippers and visitors from across the globe. It stands as a centre of worship and a symbol of tolerance, coexistence, and cultural understanding.

Before we jump into the ‘how to’ of visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, here are a few more facts you may not know about the UAE’s grandest building.

• The Mosque was built to honour the country’s Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, a visionary leader who believed nothing was impossible.
• Construction began in 1996, and the facility has been open for worship since 2007.  
• More than 38 contractors and thousands of workers from around the world were involved with completing various elements of the structure and decoration. Sourcing long-lasting materials and expert craftsmanship were of paramount importance.
• The Grand Mosque is actively used throughout the week and can accommodate over 55,000 worshippers.
• During Ramadan, attendance reaches exceptional levels — with more than 105,000 gathering on the 27th night in 2025. The Courtyard alone can host up to 31,000 worshippers, while the main prayer hall accommodates about 7,800, and two additional halls each welcome around 1,500 worshippers.
• Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was built on a site covering more than 555,000 square metres (55.5 hectares), with the main building itself occupying a footprint of around 121,800 square metres.
• The mosque fatures 82 domes, with the highest minaret standing 107 metres (351 feet) tall.
• The architectural style of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (chief Architect Yusef Adbelki) is a harmonious blend of Islamic traditions, reflecting Moroccan, Mughal, Mamluk, Ottoman, and Fatimid influences.

General Tips for Visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

• Although entry systems have changed in recent years, and registration is now required to enter the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the mosque remains free for all to enter, with optional cultural tours and premium services available to enhance the visitor experience.
• The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is open seven days a week from 9:00 AM until 10:00 PM (closed Fridays only between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM for Worship) –see modified Ramadan times.
• We suggest getting in as early as possible in the day to avoid the heat and inevitable crowds. Once the tour buses from Dubai arrive, the area can become extremely busy.

Entering the Mosque

• Whether you arrive by private car, taxi, or bus, your journey begins in the Dome of Peace.
  • Here, you will also find the Al Jami’ Library, the Light & Peace Museum, the Diya Universe of Light immersive experience, a VIP majlis, an auditorium, and a souvenir shop.
• Before entering the mosque itself, compliance with the mosque’s dress code will be inspected.
• A designated pathway then takes you from the Al Noor entrance and the courtyard, before entering the main prayer hall (where shoes must be removed).
• A self-guided tour concludes with the Reflective Pools and Islamic Gardens.
• For families, you can download a free children’s activity booklet, ‘Colors and Art,’ about the mosque online to keep little ones engaged and entertained during your visit.

Dress Code at the Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi

• Respectful dress must be worn inside the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque grounds at all times. 
• Men must have their knees covered and wear shirts with sleeves.
• Women must be covered from their ankles to their wrists, with their heads also covered. No skin-tight or transparent clothing should be worn.
• If you do not meet the dress code standards, staff will politely request you to make the necessary adjustments or direct you to purchase suitable clothing from the attached Souq Al Jami’.

Post-COVID Update: The mosque no longer provides a free abaya/kandura service for guests. If you are deemed inappropriately covered you will be directed to the small strip of shops to buy an appropriate covering. These items are fairly inexpensive, but important to note there is no longer a free rental option as many online sources still state.

Tours of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

• Not only is entry free to the Grand Mosque, but so are the informative public cultural tours.
• Conducted in English or Arabic by fabulously well-versed Emirati volunteers, they will talk you through many of the important architectural features of the building and answer any of your questions about the building of religion. 
• These tours are presently available three times a day from Sunday to Thursday and twice a day on Fridays – see the current timetable here.
• You must be present before the tour starts to receive your headsets, as the guide may need to shout to be heard (groups can be large). Please arrive in plenty of time; if you are unsure, visit the Customer Happiness Counter.
• After your tour, you can freely explore the rest of the Mosque and grounds at your own pace, though note the one-way system.
• There is now an audio e-guide, ‘El-Delleel,’ available to accompany you on your tour around the mosque. It is available in 14 languages, as well as versions for guests who are deaf or blind. It is possible to reserve these online as they are limited in number.
• Additionally, paid private cultural tours are available, provided by staff at SZGMC, for an enhanced experience. These range in price from AED 250 pp for 30 minutes, through to AED 1,500 for a 90-minute Golden Tour, which includes VIP parking, use of the club car, and a Cultural Tour specialist.

Dining Options at the Grand Mosque

No doubt touring the Grand Mosque, especially on a hot and sunny day, is thirsty work.

There are now food outlets in the souq attached to the mosque, as well as a small supermarket. Please note that food and drinks should not be consumed while touring inside the mosque.

Many nearby hotels (more below) offer dining options before or after your visit to the mosque.

Wahat Al Karama Memorial

Extend your trip to the Grand Mosque by also visiting Wahat Al Karama – translated as “oasis of dignity”.

The 45,000 sqm monument is situated across the freeway from the Grand Mosque, adjacent to the Ritz Hotel and the General Headquarters of the UAE Armed Forces. The site is a permanent tribute and war memorial to honour the UAE’s martyred soldiers and other Emiratis who sacrificed their lives for the service of the nation.

The site includes a Memorial with distinctive aluminium-clad slabs resting on one another, a Memorial Plaza with a beautiful reflective pool, and a Pavilion of Honour.

• Open 9:00 am to 10.45 pm daily
• Entry is free
• A free shuttle service runs from the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre every 30 minutes to Wahat Al Karama from 10:00 AM to 7:15 PM

Where to Stay Near the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The closest hotel, and the only one within walking distance if the weather is cool enough, is The Ritz-Carlton.  This imposing hotel is situated immediately above the freeway, connected to Wahat Al Karama by a pedestrian bridge.  If the budget permits, it’s also one of our top recommended stays for families, thanks to its restaurants and facilities.

The best distance views of the Mosque are captured from Bab al Bahr, where there are several hotels, including the Fairmont, Traders Hotel, and the Shangri-La.  When staying at these hotels, you will likely be charged more for a waterside/mosque view roo, but waking up to see this stunning beauty?  Completely worth it!

How to Visit the Grand Mosque – Transportation

From Abu Dhabi

From any hotel in central Abu Dhabi or surrounding islands such as Saadiyat Island and Yas Island, it is an easy taxi drive, and plentiful drivers wait in the taxi ranks to take you to your next destination.

The Grand Mosque is also a stop on the Abu Dhabi Big Bus tour and a stop with the Experience Abu Dhabi free shuttle buses (Routes B2, B3, C & E).

From Abu Dhabi, you can also join a (paid) guided tour that includes a stop at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque if you prefer something a little more personal, with all your transport included. Why not try:

Visiting the Grand Mosque from Dubai

Even if you are staying in Dubai, the Grand Mosque is still frequently recommended as part of a must-see Dubai itinerary. Note that it is just over an hour’s drive without heavy traffic from Downtown Dubai to the Mosque. 

You can hire a taxi (approximately AED 350), a private car (slightly more, depending on the size/quality of the vehicle), or consider joining an organized tour.

Another option is to book a private driver with GetTransfer – simply enter your destination, and the type of vehicle you would like, and drivers can bid to provide your service.

Can You Visit the Grand Mosque During an AUH Stopover?

If you are squeezing in a visit between Zayed International Airport (AUH) flights, it’s only a 15-20-minute taxi drive away. Allow yourself at least a 4-hour stopover with time to clear immigration at both ends. [Subject to holding a valid visa or eligibility for a Visa on Arrival].

An airport taxi adds an AED 25 flag fall, so expect a taxi to the Mosque to cost about AED 60-65. Your return taxi will be about AED 40. There is a taxi rank located at the Grand Mosque for your return to the airport.

If you are on a budget and coming from AUH via bus, the closest stopping point for the A1 route is Zayed Sports City. The fare, at the time of writing, is 4 AED per person one way. It’s then approximately a 15-20-minute walk back to the Grand Mosque—not recommended in the summer heat, but you may be able to catch a shorter taxi ride from ZSC to the Grand Mosque.

The opening times for tourists to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque are:

Saturday to Thursday:

• Open from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM (last entry 9:30 PM)

Friday:

• Open from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM & 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM (last entry 11:30 AM/9:30 PM)

Ramadan hours

The Grand Mosque remains open during the Holy Month of Ramadan, with adjusted timings that vary from year to year. Please refer to this guide for the current year’s Ramadan timings.

Worshippers may enter at any time.

NEW: You can now visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque overnight as a transit passenger, taking advantage of the new Sura cultural tours. These should be prebooked and run every hour from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM. Unlike the day tours, the night tour has a small pre-paid fee of AED20, with a maximum group size of 20 people.

Where is Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi is the Capital City of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a Middle Eastern country.

Abu Dhabi is also the name of the Emirate (or “state”) in which it is located.

Where is the UAE located?

The UAE is situated on the Arabian Peninsula.  To its southeast, you will find Oman, and to the southwest, Saudi Arabia.   The country faces the Persian Gulf (or Arabian Gulf, depending on who you ask) and the Gulf of Oman to the east.

Is Abu Dhabi a country?

No, it is one of seven “Emirates” (or states) of the United Arab Emirates.

Is Abu Dhabi In Dubai?

No, a common misconception is that Dubai is actually the country, whereas Dubai is an Emirate, just like Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi is by far the largest of the seven Emirates of the UAE, but Dubai is the most populous (and arguably the best internationally known, hence the confusion).

There is no such thing as Abu Dubai!! This is just people getting the two UAE cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai mixed up.

The Arabian Peninsula is part of Asia. Most of the Middle East is on the Asian continent, with the exceptions of Egypt (Africa), Turkey (partly Europe), and Cyprus (closer to the Middle East but part of the EU), thefere Abu Dhabi is in Asia.

How big is Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi Emirate covers over 67,300 square kilometres, which is about 87% of the total landmass of the UAE, 83,600 square kilometres (114^th largest country in the world).

The city of Abu Dhabi – or Abu Dhabi Metropolitan Area, is 972 square kilometres, spread over several islands and the mainland of the UAE.

What is Abu Dhabi’s population?

The Statistic Centre Abu Dhabi has reported that as of 2023, the population of the Abu Dhabi Emirate is 3,789,860, of which 66% reside in metro Abu Dhabi (2.5 million).

The split between males and females is 67%/33%, mainly due to the high number of expatriate labourers from southern Asia.

Statistics from the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Authority appear outdated; however, other external sources estimate that the UAE population is between 9.9 million and 11.7 million.

Note that the UAE’s population primarily comprises expatriate workers – some sources claim up to 90%!

Is Abu Dhabi bigger than Dubai?

By land size, yes! By a long way. By population, though, Dubai is the larger city, believed to have a population of 3.77 million (Dubai Statistics Centre – August 2024).

Can you easily get between Abu Dhabi and Dubai?

Absolutely, the two cities are connected by road (there is no commuter train yet, but watch out for Etihad Rail and the touted ultra-high-speed Hyperloop!).

Travelling between the two cities can take one to two hours, depending on your start and finish point in each city.

Note that whilst there’s normally no border crossing point between the two Emirates, a border checkpoint was erected between the neighbours during the peak of COVID. Visitors from Dubai to Abu Dhabi emirate had to show they were COVID-negative or, later, a “Green pass” to cross the border.

The border crossing point is no longer used, an a Green pass is no longer required in Abu Dhabi Emirate.

What does Abu Dhabi mean?

In Arabic, it means “Land of the Gazelle”.

How old is Abu Dhabi?

There is evidence of human life in what is now the Abu Dhabi Emirate dating back 5000 years. Abu Dhabi city’s current location on the Gulf Coast dates back to the 18th century, when it was just a fishing and pearl-diving village for decades.

The discovery of oil in the 1930s started the change in the Gulf nations previously known as the Trucial States. The British withdrew from the region in the late 1960s, and a new country was born—the United Arab Emirates.

The UAE federated on 2 December 1971 under the guidance of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan, who went on to become the country’s first ruler.

This is considered the beginning of modern-day UAE and the country’s birth date.

Who is the head of Abu Dhabi

After the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan passed away in 2004, power was passed on to his first son – Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan.

Sheikh Khalifa passed away on 13 May 2022; the former Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed (MBZ) took charge and is the current ruler (Emir) of Abu Dhabi and the President de Jure of the United Arab Emirates.

The Federal Supreme Council—the seven Emirs from the seven Emirates of the UAE—determines the President and Prime Minister of the country (currently Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Emir of Dubai).

The country also has a Federal National Council with 40 seats; members are elected by Emirati citizens with varying seats determined by each Emirates’ size.

Is Abu Dhabi rich?

In relative terms to the rest of the world, yes.  The UAE holds the 7th largest oil reserves in the world, and those oil reserves sit vastly within the desert regions of Abu Dhabi bordering Saudi Arabia.

How hot does it get in Abu Dhabi?

It is no secret that this is a desert city, and things get HOT in the summer! And by hot, we mean upwards of 45°c/113°F in July and August. And don’t forget the humidity that joins the party, too, particularly in September; the “feels like” temperature in Abu Dhabi regularly ticks over 50°c/122°F.

But it’s not all bad news; there are plenty of months of the year when you get clear sunny days, blue skies, warm water, and perfect beach weather.

What is the main language in Abu Dhabi?

The official language is Arabic. However, English is widely spoken and used in the service industry. Visitors will have no problems getting by with only English.

Given the country’s expatriate nature, dozens of languages are also spoken, including Hindi, Urdu, Farsi, Bengali, Samali, Tamil, and Tagalog, to name but a few.

What is Abu Dhabi’s main religion?

The UAE has a Sunni Muslim majority, but note that as much as 85% of the population is considered expatriates. The majority of expatriates are also Muslims. However, there are large minorities of Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, and Jews—basically, all religions are represented in some way.

Tourists may note the audible sound of “the call to prayer” several times daily. As a non-Muslim tourist, you do not need to do anything, and most businesses continue to operate during prayer times, unlike some Gulf neighbours.

When are holidays marked in Abu Dhabi?

Although the country follows a standard Gregorian calendar for schools, businesses, and, of course, the seasons, the Hijri (Islamic) calendar is used to mark religious occasions, the most prominent of which is Ramadan, the Holy Month.

Note that in Abu Dhabi—and the rest of the UAE—they have shifted away from the Gulf tradition of Friday being set aside as the Holy Day. Government departments, schools, and many private businesses in the UAE moved on 1 January 2022 to a Monday to Friday work week, with Friday being a half-day so that people can still attend Friday afternoon prayers.

Saturday and Sunday are officially the weekend in Abu Dhabi, though retail and hospital businesses run seven days a week. Many blue-collar workers will only get one day off per week, usually Saturday or Sunday.

What are the top tourist attractions in Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi is home to many beautiful and fascinating modern Islamic buildings which are a must for all visitors to see and experience, including:

What food do they eat in Abu Dhabi?

Given the vast expat population, it’s easy to get hold of just about any nationality of food!

Traditional Emirati restaurants may require some more searching! You can try Meylas in Al Muneera. Also, Al Fanar Restaurant at Yas Mall has a good traditional offering.

All meat served in the UAE is Halal. The exception is pork, which is scarcely available in restaurants due to special licencing rules. You can obtain pork for home consumption at specialised supermarkets.

Can you drink alcohol in Abu Dhabi?

Whilst Muslims are forbidden from drinking alcohol, non-Muslims are free to have a drink but must abide by specific rules. For home consumption, non-Muslim expats must have a special drinking licence to purchase alcohol from specialised stores (this was abolished in 2020).

Tourists can purchase alcohol from licensed premises in Abu Dhabi, primarily bars in hotels. Some nightclubs, social clubs, and restaurants also have alcohol licenses, and an increasing number of stand-alone restaurants now have licenses to serve alcohol.

Note that drinking in public and public drunkness is strictly prohibited and comes with hefty fines and jail terms. Always keep drinking in areas where it’s allowed and in moderation.

Do I need a Visa to visit Abu Dhabi?

Yes. In some cases, you will need to organise a visit visa in advance, but there are 20 countries whose citizens can obtain a FREE 30-day visa on arrival to the UAE. 

Citizens of 40 additional countries can apply for a 90-day multiple-entry visa. We discuss UAE Visit Visas here.

Note that a full overhaul of the UAE visa system is expected in Ocotber-2022 – we will update this section when the proposed changes are brought into law.

What is Abu Dhabi’s time Zone?

Abu Dhabi operates on Gulf Standard Time – GST – which is GMT/UTC +4 hours.

What is the currency in Abu Dhabi?

The common currency across the United Arab Emirates is the UAE dirham, which is written AED or sometimes dhs. It comes in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 AED notes.

1 USD = 3.67 AED; the currency is pegged to the USD, so it does not fluctuate (it will, however, fluctatuate against all other currencies in line with USD movements).

Dirhams are further broken down into fils – coins are 1 dirham, 50 fil and 25 fil coins.  Smaller coins are now non-existent, and many will simply round to the nearest dirham.

Do I need to be covered as a woman in Abu Dhabi?

No. As a visiting tourist to Abu Dhabi, women are not expected to be fully covered over heads and bodies. Out of modesty, however, women should not wear anything too tight and revealing.

Tourists should aim to cover their shoulders and knees in public—this applies to men, too. Attending religious or government buildings will require you to be fully covered. Abayas can be borrowed or bought at places such as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque for this purpose.

Eid Mubarak!

The celebration of Eid-al-Fitr occurs at the conclusion of the Holy Month of Ramadan.

The dates this special occasion will fall on will be determined by moon sighting committee, however, the exact days the public and private sector will take as holidays in Abu Dhabi are confirmed by the UAE Government.

In 2025, this public holiday will likely fall from fall from Sunday 30 March to Wednesday 2 April 2025

What do I need to know as a visitor to Abu Dhabi during Eid?

Eid Al Fitr celebrates the Festival of Breaking the Fast. From Ramadan 29 to Shawwal 3 (the 10th month on the Hijri calendar), Muslims worldwide mark the end of “sawm”—daytime fasting—one of the five pillars of Islam.

Eid al-Fitr is a festival for Muslims to show gratitude to Allah (God) for the help and strength he gave them throughout the month of Ramadan to help them practice self-control.

Muslims will gather in mosques or open spaces and offer two units of prayer – called “Rakat”. The prayers are followed by a sermon in which the Imam asks for forgiveness, mercy, and peace for everyone worldwide.

Along with exchanging Eid greetings and feasting with family, another important element of the Eid celebrations is giving money to the poor (known as ‘Zakat al-Fitr‘).

Gift-giving among family members is also commonplace. Not quite like Christmas for Christians, but along the same lines of giving and receiving. Commonly referred to as Eidi, elders give children money or gifts to mark the occasion.

There is nothing specific visitors to Abu Dhabi really need to observe during Eid. However, it’s important to note it can be a very busy time of year, and hotel prices can rise as a result of a lot of local families choosing to staycation at this time of year.

The polite greeting to use at this time is “Eid Mubarak”.

Confused over which Eid?

The second Eid, which is actually the holier of the two Eids celebrated by Muslims around the world, is Eid-al-Adha (Eid ul-Adha) – Festival of the Sacrifice.

Eid Al Adha occurs on the 10th day of Dhu Al Hijjah, which is the 12th and final month in the Hijri (Islamic) calendar.

Arafat Day and Eid Al Adha are expected to fall from 5 to 8 June 2025 (subject to moon sighting)

This will be another long weekend for public and private sector employees, a minimum of 4 days.

Where Can I Watch Eid Fireworks in Abu Dhabi

The annual fireworks will go ahead at the following prime city locations and several venues around the Emirate:

• On Yas Island, over Eid, there will be three fireworks displays at Yas Bay and Yas Marina. You can also get great views from Al Raha Beach – Al Muneera and Al Bandar. (10-12 April 2024)

• Huydayriyat Island – a new location, you’ll find waterfront fireworks from 9:00 PM (10 April 2024)

• Al Maryah Island – the waters outside the Galleria are expected to once again wow the crowds in the city with a 9:00 PM show (dates TBC)

• Al Mugheirah Bay – situated 90 minutes west of the city on the coast, the skies over Khor Al Bazim lagoon waterfront retail and residential community will light up from 9:00 PM (10 April 2024)

• Al Ain Hazza Stadium will offer a family-friendly event with seating for a wonderful show at 9:00 PM (10 April 2024)

• Madinat Zayed and Ghayathi in Al Dhafra (9:00 PM 10 April 2024).

Dining and nightlife events Eid al Fitr 2025 in Abu Dhabi

Unlike days gone by when religious holidays in the UAE meant “dry days” were announced, since 2018 the Abu Dhabi Department of Tourism has placed no limitations on hospitality venues in Abu Dhabi. You can expect drinks service to continue as usual over the Eid break. Look out for these advertised events:

• The Yas Bay Waterfront Nights will continue until the end of Eid 9:00 PM to 2:00 AM nightly

• A 2-day festival on 10 & 11 April will include Al Ayalla performances, F&B pop-ups and Eidiya Giveaways.

Eid Surprises on Al Maryah Island

• We await news of whether this activity will return in 2025.

Offers and shopping deals for Eid Al Fitr in Abu Dhabi

Aside from the religious aspects of Eid, this holiday is also synonymous with local shopping deals in Abu Dhabi and the UAE. Expect to bag a bargain at the shopping malls and get one early, as the crowds can be crazy come evening at popular venues.
