The good news is that the outdoor hospitality market has revolutionised in Abu Dhabi over the past few years, with the opening of several glamping options in the city, the desert, and the historic city of Al Ain.

Bab Al Nojoum – Hudayriyat

Sitting incredibly close to the city in the newly developed Al Hudayriat Island (off Abu Dhabi island’s west coast), you’ll find Bab Al Nojoum.

Operated by Mawarid Hotels and Hospitality, this glamping site has something for all levels of glampers on the beachfront. From a luxury two-floor offering with its own pool and private beach frontage, through to standard tents and luxury tents, even campervans!

You will find bonfire areas, BBQ facilities, a beach cinema, a restaurant, a juice bar, food outlets, and a kayak hire centre here.

How much does it cost? Various glamping and on-site tent camping options are available to suit your group size and level of luxury! Pricing starts from AED 450 on weekdays. Inquire directly for pricing on your dates from these options:

• Duplex tent: Family groups of up to 4 can enjoy their own private plunge pool, fully equipped kitchen, two queen-sized beds and a private bathroom with AC.

• Chalet Tent: These spacious tents include a mini kitchen, dining table and chairs, terrace and a plunge pool. Accommodation is one queen-sized bed, two singles, and a queen mattress, allowing groups of up to 6. Enjoy a private bathroom and AC.

• Camping on wheels: A totally unique concept, Waghi 1 & 2 are converted VWs or Blazar, the vintage Defender can fit two campers with mini kitchens, AC, sofa beds and towels (shared toilets and bathrooms).

• Beachside Camping: Several on-site tent options exist with shared bathrooms per cluster. Campsites also share a BBQ area, and picnic tables and seating are spotted around. Al Najm tents suit two campers, while Al Helal can fit four and Al Badr can fit six. Wave tents for two are located right on the beachfront.

You need to provide your own sleeping bags, but mattresses and towels can be provided. Note that air mattresses over ground mats will reduce your tent capacity; you book these in addition to your tent.

Bab Al Nojoum – Al Mugheirah Resort

A second branch of Bab Al Nojoum has opened on Mirfa Beach, approximately 1.5 hours west of Abu Dhabi city. Much more than just the glamping experience itself, guests are invited at Al Mugheirah Resort to disconnect from their tech and truly enjoy their surroundings with plenty on offer through the activity hub.

Located within the Marawah Marine Biosphere, this eco resort includes a bike rental store on site with 4.5km of dedicated bike paths around the 45-hectare property. Guests are also invited to choose from a menu of additional activities, including falconry, horseback riding, and cooking classes.

This remote site, set just 100 metres off the beach, offers visitors the choice of staying in a converted Airstream trailer or a one or two-bedroom cabin made from recycled shipping containers. All up, 40 caravans/cabins are on the site, well spread out, so each offers the guest some privacy.

BBQs are included if you want to BYO or sit around your own fire pit. Alternatively, join in a communal Braai experience for dinner, and the on-site chef can provide breakfast.

Where to find it: Mirfa Beach is around 150km west of Abu Dhabi city along the E11, accessible in a standard vehicle; the journey takes around 90 minutes.

Al Ain Glamping

Shuweihat Beach

Keep heading along the E11 and past Ruwais to the long stretch of beach between the Shuweihat Power Complex and Shuweihat Island. It is quite exposed here, so it is best for winter camping only and BYO everything!

Shuweihat Island and its stunning rock formations nearby are considered Government property, so technically, they should not be visited and are fenced off – though we continue to see photos regularly posted on social media. A 4WD is recommended for getting over the small beachfront dunes, and do watch the varying tide.

Desert Camping in Abu Dhabi

If you have the right camping gear and vehicle, try these sensational outdoor spots in the Abu Dhabi desert over winter. (We cannot give exact pin drops for great camping sites in Abu Dhabi as these are well-guarded secrets; nobody wants to spoil their perfect patch of the desert!)

Al Wathba

This is an easy beginner campers’ location as you are not far from civilisation (the Al Wathba cycling track is nearby), and the dunes are relatively easy. Even some smaller SUVs/AWD vehicles could cope in most parts.

Due to its location, it can suffer a little from light pollution and noise into the evening, but it’s a great place to get started and become familiar with desert camping in Abu Dhabi.

There’s also Al Wathba Lake, which has recently been upgraded with proper picnic and campsite facilities. Your big consideration here is how close you want to be to other campers and the disrespect many show for late-night music and noise, particularly on weekends.

Liwa Desert

Arguably one of the most beautiful and isolated parts of the Arabian Gulf, Liwa desert camping offers endless possibilities for exploring and finding your own exclusive spot nestled amongst the dunes—and most definitely the best spot for stargazing.

Its isolation can also play against campers, however. It is not recommended for novices due to the difficult driving and lack of mobile phone signals in this area of the country.

The dunes are magnificent, so it’s one for your motoring enthusiasts and more experienced campers. Be warned the overnights can get super nippy in winter, and always travel in a group with plentiful food and water supplies.

The National Aquarium

The National Aquarium is a fairly relaxing yet informative way to spend a few hours. It is home to 46,000 marine creatures, making it the largest in the Middle East. The Aquarium plays a huge role in marine rescue operations and conservation.

We recommend the behind-the-scenes tour—especially if you’re travelling with kids. This gives you the opportunity to visit the animal hospital and see how aquarium staff care for sick and injured animals. Abu Dhabi Children’s Library

A gorgeous little spot that seems to largely remain a hidden gem in the heart of the city, it’s part of the Cultural Foundation Center, on the same city block as Qasr al Hosn.

At the Abu Dhabi Children’s Library, little ones can enjoy storytelling sessions, imaginative play, sensory art, and plentiful reading nooks. Entry is free, but check out the session details in advance as some activities require pre-booking and payment.

The list is really quite endless with every shopping mall having some form of indoor kids entertainment center. Some of the better ones worth flagging:

• Leo and Loona Kids Park delivers a brand new family experience for the littlest ones at Yas Mall and Dalma Mall
• Orange Wheels edutainment can be found at Al Wadha Mall and Raha Mall
• The newly refurbished Cabbodle has opened in a new location in the Galleria Mall
• Pop in and Play is a great one for your Lego-mad juniors, with branches at World Trade Center, Yas Mall, Capital Mall, Reem Mall, Deerfields Mall, and Galleria Mall

Never Just a Shopping Mall

In addition to a large supermarket and a string of international fashion brands, almost every shopping centre in Abu Dhabi contains at least one soft play centre, a cinema, and a plethora of places to eat and drink. From budget cafes to high-end restaurants, there’s something for everyone. Live shows or performances often occur, and there is no end to special events.

Two of the biggest shopping centres where you’ll find the most additional dining and entertainment are Yas Mall on Yas Island and The Galleria Mall on Al Maryah Island.

We’d also recommend checking out The Souq at World Trade Centre Mall on the Corniche, a great place to pick up some local souvenirs.

From tent camping to luxury villas, what exactly is Bab Al Nojoum Hudayriyat in Abu Dhabi?

Bab Al Nojoum first burst into Abu Dhabi’s tourism and outdoor adventure scene in late 2020 with one of the country’s first urban campsite concepts, along with glamping chalets and unique glamping vans on Hudayriyat Island.

They have since opened two more sites in Abu Dhabi emirate, one in Al Mugheirah on Al Mirfa Beach (Western Region, approximately 90 minutes drive from Abu Dhabi), and a third recently opened deep in the Liwa Desert – Bab Al Nojoum Bateen Liwa Resort, approximately 2.5 hours drive from the city.

The most recent extension on Hudayriyat Island opened in January 2024 and brings a unique new offering to luxury seekers in Abu Dhabi – Ocean View and Over Water private villas.

In this guide to Bab Al Nojoum, we’re going to focus on the property on Hudayriyat Island, which is only minutes from the city of Abu Dhabi. However, you could be a world away from this island retreat. We’ll help you compare the offerings at the glamping and camping site versus the new luxury villas so you can choose the type of waterfront escape that suits you best.

Bab Al Nojoum Camping & Glamping

This original camping and glamping wing of Bab Al Nojoum has been around for a few years now, setting the stage for what is now a burgeoning tourism scene in the UAE – glamping!!

The campground site, the first of its kind in Abu Dhabi, consists of a variety of basic tents with shared camp facilities, through to luxury chalets with private, temperature-controlled pools that can sleep up to 6.

Here’s a little peak at what to expect with each accommodation offering:

Camping at Bab Al Nojoum Hudayriyat

Basic camping at Hudayriyat starts very basic indeed; you get a tent on the campsite and access to all the shared facilities, such as clean, shared bathrooms, wifi, BBQ pits and stoves for cooking. You can add towels and mattresses to your booking but will need bring your own sleeping bags.

Tents range from single-person to quadruples, with a variety of garden and ocean views. They also offer a slightly more ‘luxurious’ Wave Tent where the bedding is provided and raised off the ground, but you’re still in the heart of the campground action with your own sun loungers and uninterrupted beach views.

It is possible to reserve ‘private plots’ at the campground, too, which is a selection of tents sharing the same communal area and fenced off. They can be set aside just for your group, accommodating between 12 to 28 guests sleeping (or 18 to 36, including day visitors).

Glamping Mobile Homes

For a unique stay, Bab Al Nojoum Hudayriyat also offers the choice of booking mobile homes/campervans. These have been set up inside two converted VW Combi vans ‘Waghi 1 & 2’, and a vintage Landrover Defender, ‘Blazar’.

They offer the best location in the resort on the beachfront and are close to all the amenities on offer at the campsite. You don’t get private bathrooms, but you have an unbeatable view!

Luxury Duplex and Chalet Tents

If canvas tents, sleeping bags and shared bathrooms don’t quite feel like your thing, but you love the campsite atmosphere, next up, you’ll want to check out the chalet tents and duplex tents on offer.

The Chalets at Al Hudayriyat can sleep up to 6 people and offer both kitchen and bathroom facilities (with free-flowing aircon!). Included with your stay, you can enjoy your own temperature-controlled pool if you don’t fancy taking a dip in the ocean on your doorstep.

Then there are two and four-bed duplex tents. These also offer self-catering facilities and living areas inside the tent, ensuite bathroom and a private pool and terrace.

The Duplex Tents and Chalets are in a separate wing to the campgrounds.

When it comes to dining at Bab Al Nojoum Hudayriyat, you have the choice between self-catering, or you can take advantage of the on-site dining options, including 28 Degrees casual eatery, Layala Bat and Bahr Bar.

If you are celebrating a special occasion, staff can even set you up a special candlelit dinner for two.

Guests are invited to disconnect and enjoy the outdoor lifestyle at Bab Al Nojoum Hudayriyat, but for convenience, there’s free wifi throughout.

A daily program of activities is on offer, though it should be noted during school term times, at least, as it’s pretty quiet midweek. Most of the fun and action happens at the weekends, Friday through Sunday.

Bab Al Nojoum Hudayriyat Villas

The latest extension to Bab Al Nojoum really steps up the luxury and service you can expect to receive. A collection of 17 stand-alone oceanfront villas and 14 overwater villas awaits guests.

It is very important to note the distinction between the luxury villas and the glamping concepts; they are frankly worlds apart!

The only interaction most guests will have between the two is that ocean swimming can only take place in front of the glamping section. This is because the water in front of the extension is currently a government-protected marine area, so you won’t be swimming immediately adjacent to the villas, but rather enjoying the ocean views.

You have a completely separate check-in area with valet service and will be whisked away to your accommodation by cart service for your exclusive stay.

Bab Al Nojoum Hudayriyat Ocean Front Villas

The one bedroom villas can accommodate up to 3 guests (with sofa bed) whilst the two bedroom villas can accommodate up to 5 people. Each bedroom is fitted with an en suite with Molton Brown toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, and you will have a small living room and kitchenette with tea and coffee facilities.

Outside, there are multiple seating options, from poolside loungers and a hammock to the in-pool lounges and sunset seating gazebo.

Guests staying at the luxury villas can opt for a la carte dining or all-inclusive at the onsite fine dining restaurant, La Cocinna. The all-inclusive package includes drinks from the restaurant but does not include the mini-bar (you can request the mini bar be removed if you wish).

You also get complete access to all the Bab Al Nojoum camping facilities, so swim on the private beach, join the nightly movies or bonfire and take advantage of the non-motorized sports and beach games program.

Bab Al Nojoum Hudayriyat Over Water Villas

Similar to the Ocean View Villas, the Over Water Villas come with 1 and 2-bedroom offerings, the latter being the largest and most luxurious at the property.

Villas with odd numbers have a commanding view of the city skyline, while even numbers look out onto the remote Abu Dhabi islands in the Persian Gulf.

The overwater villas definitely give out distinct Maldivian vibes without the need for a 4-hour flight! The crystal clear blue waters offer ideal marine life spotting opportunities and dreamy views back to the city skyline of Abu Dhabi.

You can, of course, book the larger ‘family-sized’ 2-bedroom villas. However, as parents with young kids ourselves, we suggest you be mindful that kids are strictly prohibited from jumping off the pool ledges and balconies into the ocean below; stopping them from doing this could be a stressful and ongoing challenge you could do without.

We’d personally recommend that families keep to the Bab al Nojoum Ocean View villas and leave the overwater villas to couples!

The city of Abu Dhabi sits approximately 1 hour west of Dubai city, and 1.5 hours from DXB airport. For the time estimates given to the regional properties, add at least 60 minutes more coming from Dubai.

You will ideally have access to your own car, and you will need to drive while in the UAE to access these more remote properties. Alternatively, you can seek out services, such as Get Transfer, if you are looking to locate a driver willing to take you there and back.

Abu Dhabi’s “Bridge to Nowhere” finally goes somewhere!

In 2009, the longest cable suspension bridge in the UAE was completed. But no cars would cross the bridge for many years to come as the bridge went to what we now know as Al Hudayriyat Island, which was little more than a vast, desolate sand island off the west coast of Abu Dhabi Island – nearly matching the main city island in length.

Roll the clock forward to 2026, and Al Hudayriyat is now the go-to sports and leisure destination of Abu Dhabi. A beachfront and cycling track already opened in May 2018, but now a new all-star lineup of outdoor adventures awaits for families and fitness enthusiasts.

The Hudayriyat Recreation Project is a 3000-hectare waterfront community known as the Hudayriyat Leisure & Entertainment District.

Marsana

Marsana is the entertainment district and waterfront promenade. Beach and Playground

The beachfront and playground at Al Hudayriyat opened during the first stage of development and remain free*. There’s a 600m stretch of calm water patrolled by lifeguards with shower and toilet facilities.

Beach sports such as Volleyball are available.

The beach is open daily from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Recent new additions include an outdoor gym and play area (rumours are abound this could soon become a paid feature too).

* The ‘free’ beach has been sadly removed with profit around every corner it seems lately in Abu Dhabi, you now pay from AED 25 for adults on a weekday for Marsana Beach West, through to AED 100 for the more ‘exclusive’ Marsana Beach East on a weekend.

NEW SUMMER 2025: Marsana East beach has been fitted out with floodlighting and will now be open until 10:00 pm weekdays, midnight on weekends for night swimming, the first of its kind in Abu Dhabi.

Marsana Express Train

A cute addition the younger kids love, the slow-moving locomotive takes a loop around the paved areas of Marsana for 15 AED per person.

Aqua Park Marsana

Added in 2022, this inflatable water course, spelling out the word “Marsana” from above, can be found just off the main Hudayriyat beach.

The inflatable park is fully supervised and has 247 different features for kids to explore! Safety jackets and non-slip rubber shoes are provided.

Still to Come on Hudayriyat Island

Hudayriyat is undergoing a massive phase of development in 2025, including extensive residential housing and the construction of the city’s first Velodrome, anticipated to open this winter.

The 3,500-seat indoor cycling track will become the first UCI Category 1 track in the region. It will also feature a rooftop track with a 600-metre cycling incline.

Keeping teenagers happy and entertained isn’t always easy. Even the most amicable are prone to uttering ‘I’m bored’ every now and again. The good news is that it’s difficult for even the grumpiest of teenagers not to have a good time in Abu Dhabi.

With world-class theme parks, awesome shopping experiences, incredible dining opportunities, oodles of culture, and unique natural environments, Abu Dhabi really does have it all for an incredible family vacation.

In this article, we highlight what your teens and tweens shouldn’t miss on their trip to Abu Dhabi – plus loads of other ideas for keeping them entertained in the United Arab Emirates!

Theme Park & Indoor Fun in Abu Dhabi With Teens

Yas Island Theme Parks

Abu Dhabi is blessed with some of the best theme parks in the world, all located on the fun-filled Yas Island. These are not to be missed by any adrenaline-seeking teen!

• Ferrari World Abu Dhabi – Abu Dhabi’s oldest theme park and home to the fastest roller coaster in the world – Formula Rossa. Perhaps the kids can also persuade you to take them out for a spin on the streets of Abu Dhabi in a real Ferrari (available at extra cost).

• Yas Waterworld – the region’s leading water park with over 40 different rides and experiences. Teen favourites include the Falcon’s Falaj, where they can whoosh through tubes on an inflatable with their friends and surf the world’s largest sheet wave at Bubble Barrel.

• Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi – Whether your teens are Batman fans or still like to indulge in Scooby Doo, Warner Brother’s World promises fun for the whole family. It’s the region’s biggest indoor theme park and features 29 exhilarating rides and attractions. The addition of a Harry Potter World has been announced, but no opening date, yet!

• The newly opened SeaWorld Yas Island is a great place for your nature-loving teens to find out more about life under the sea. In addition to live exhibits, there are various rides and attractions guaranteed to make your day truly memorable. Budding marine biologists might also enjoy a visit to the National Aquarium at Al Qana. Opened in 2021, the Aquarium is home to 46,000 animals.

• Not a theme park, per se, but another adrenaline-boosting destination also located on Yas Island is CLYMB. This indoor climbing centre also features the largest indoor skydiving chamber in the world.

Note that height and age restrictions apply to many rides at the theme parks listed above. Always check these out in advance to avoid any disappointment when you arrive.

Other Abu Dhabi Theme Parks

Whilst Yas Island undoubtedly has the most theme park action in Abu Dhabi, there are a couple of new venues that are also worth mentioning for the tween and teen age group.

Snow Abu Dhabi

In the heat of the desert, it might seem crazy that a whole theme park is dedicated to snow. The whimsical Snow Abu Dhabi, is, however, a great place to escape the sizzling temperatures outside and have a really ‘cool’ time.

There’s surprisingly no ski slope in Snow Abu Dhabi (sister venue to Ski Dubai), but there is a pretty impressive snow park with fun activities like toboggans and bumper tubes.

Under 14’s need an adult with them, but kids 14+ can come with their mates.

Adrenark

Adrenark Adventure is the largest indoor adventure park of its type in the Middle East. It offers climbing walls, LED slides, bungee jumping rope courses, thrilling rides, and numerous other attractions. This is a great place for thrill-seeking kids of all ages, with plenty of more challenging attractions than your average indoor play centre that will appeal to tweens and younger teens.

Shopping with Teens in Abu Dhabi

The best shopping mall for teens who love their fashion brands is The Galleria, located on Al Maryah Island. Here, you will find all of your teen’s high-street favourites and international brands that you may not find at home. There’s also a high-end designer area for a bit of style inspiration.

If your teen is more into ethnic handicrafts than keeping up with the latest fashion trends, the WTC Mall, just behind Abu Dhabi Corniche, has a souk section and shops selling more traditional attire.

There are also numerous tailor shops in the downtown area where you can select fabric and have items made to measure at a reasonable cost, giving your teen the chance to create an outfit all of their own.

Outdoor Adventures with Teens & Tweens in Abu Dhabi

Whilst the summer months in Abu Dhabi are not terribly conducive to outdoor activities, there are plenty of winter adventures teens will love.

Hit the beach

With almost 365 days of sunny weather, Abu Dhabi’s beaches are a big draw. There are several public beaches in Abu Dhabi, but for something truly special, your teens will love a day out at a beach club – come and see which ones we think are the best!

A Desert Safari Experience

No visit to the UAE is complete without a trip to the desert. There are a variety of safaris on offer, although most include camel riding, an Arabic barbecue, and some form of entertainment like belly dancing or a twirling tanoura dance.

Sometimes, there are opportunities to learn more about local arts and crafts and have a greater ecological focus, whilst others are all about the adrenaline activities in the desert, with thrilling dune bashing rides and the option to hire sand boards, dune buggies and fat bikes.

For a truly unique experience, try a desert glamping experience in Abu Dhabi; from star gazing at the foot of Jebel Hafit to converted campervans on the beach, there are plenty of unique overnight experiences to be enjoyed in Abu Dhabi’s great outdoors.

Hit the track

Even if you’re not visiting during the Grand Prix, there are still plenty of ways you can get the thrill of the race. From taking on the Go Kart track to a lap on the circuit with an expert driver (some age limits apply), there are loads of racing-related activities to keep your speed demon happy.

Anyone can join in on an open night at Yas Marina Circuit. You can cycle, jog, or walk around the Grand Prix track every Monday and Wednesday throughout the year (except GP week). Entry is free for anyone wishing to go around the track on foot. If you want to cycle around the track, there are a limited number of free bikes you can pick up at the track, but you can also pay to hire a higher-spec bike to really test your skills.

If you love cycling, there are plenty of other outdoor options. An easy cycling ride is along the Corniche, Abu Dhabi’s beachside boulevard. You’ll find bikes for rent, as well as eScooters for a fun way to zip about town.

Alternatively, those with a need for speed should head over to sporting hub Al Hudayriyat Island, where they will find a cycling track, a BMX track in Circuit X and for those up to the challenge, a new mountain biking circuited, Trail X. There are several biking shops on Hudayriyat Island that can help you out with bike hire too.

Hit the water

Fun in the water might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a city in the desert, but Abu Dhabi is blessed with numerous beaches and mangroves, serving a whole host of unique water-based experiences.

Take in the sights on a cruise

A fantastic way to see the city is to take a cruise along the Corniche. This can be done as part of a bigger group on a traditional dhow or by hiring a private speedboat. The second option gives you more flexibility and the option to stop and have a barbecue on one of the secluded beaches close to the capital, something that many people, teens included, seem to enjoy.

If you’d rather take a tour around Yas Island with its impressive marina, green mangroves and desert islands, we recommend using The Yellowboats, who pride themselves on providing a safe but exciting trip.

Kayak through the mangroves

While cruises get you close to nature, kayaking can get you closer. Our favourite water-based experience is kayaking the eastern mangroves.

Here, you will see a variety of birdlife (including flamingoes) and find sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Kayaking at the Jubail Mangroves is another chance to see a variety of marine species, perhaps even turtles or dolphins, as well as enjoy being out on the water.

Other experiences include kayaking under the magnificent dome of the Louvre; this is the perfect way to actively see the building’s impressive architecture as well as getting the endorphins flowing.

Let your teen be the captain

Sometimes teens just want to be in control and letting them be ‘captain’ for the day is one way of giving them some responsibility. Of course, you will be there to support them if anything gets too tricky!

While there are many places to hire boats in Abu Dhabi, Rhino Rides at Eastern Mangroves provide the most accessible boats for teens. Experienced guides provide a crash course in driving before taking you through the national park in convoy.

Surfing and wakeboarding in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is not well known for its breakers, and surfing in the sea is limited to rough days at Saadiyat Beach. On the other hand, most water sports providers offer wakeboarding. There are, however, closely monitored artificial opportunities to try both.

At Al Forsan International Sports Resort, a variety of water sports are on offer in the resort’s huge man-made lakes. It is the first sports resort in the Middle East to introduce the water cable system. The system pulls participants around the lakes on their chosen board or ski, giving them the opportunity to develop their skills in a safe environment before they take to the open sea.

There are also chances to surf at Yas Waterworld in the Bubbles Barrel, and a brand new surfing centre and wave pool is set to open on Hudayriat Island by the end of 2023. (In early 2024, we still await the final opening date for Surf Abu Dhabi, which will be the largest artificial wave park in the world).

Other water sports

At some beaches, you will find banana boats, parasailing, jet skis, and other water sports options. We would exercise caution and check the terms and conditions of your insurance policies before committing to any of these activities.

Be a ninja!

Very active teens will love OCR Park with its grown-up obstacle course. Ducking and diving over walls and under nets will really make them feel like a real ninja! Paintballing and Archery

Over 10s can try their hand at paintballing at Al Forsan International Sports Resort. The outdoor arena mirrors the natural landscape, offering a realistic backdrop. There are a variety of exciting scenarios on offer, from protecting the saloon from bandits to rescuing a hostage from a rival team. Whichever you choose, it’s sure to get the adrenaline pumping!

Tee off (with) Mum and Dad

Abu Dhabi is rapidly gaining a reputation as a golfing holiday destination, and with almost constant sunshine and no fewer than 5 world-class golf clubs, it’s easy to see why. There are plenty of opportunities for teens to get involved in the golfing fun.

One venue that has been tried and tested is Abu Dhabi City Golf Club, where private lessons are possible in the club’s junior academy. You can also try your hand at some fun games at GoGolf, part of the club’s driving range.

If your teen is not quite ready to take to the course, there are various golf simulators around the city, such as those at Performance Golf in Zayed Sports City. These provide a great opportunity for your teen to develop their skills, especially during the warmer months.

The Tourist Highlights for Tweens & Teens in Abu Dhabi

The highlights of your tween or teens’ trip will really depend on their interests. It would, however, be sacrilege not to visit what we would call the ‘Big 4’ tourist attractions of Abu Dhabi:

• Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque – the most visited building in the UAE – be mindful of dress code for entering the mosque; from the age of puberty, girls need to be covered entirely from wrist to ankle and will need to wear a headscarf.

• Qasr al Watan – the country’s stunning Presidential Palace is a must for anyone interested in art and architecture.

• Louvre Abu Dhabi – the museum is not huge but contains some very important artefacts. On the whole, it feels like a manageable sampler collection of Earth’s history and culture and is great for teenagers eager to learn more.

• Qasr Al Hosn – often thought of as the birthplace of the UAE, this coral stone fort and cultural centre is well worth a visit. As well as an interactive museum, there’s the opportunity to get hands-on with some local crafts, take part in a coffee-drinking ceremony at the adjacent House of the Artisans, and see mesmerising traditional performances.

Hot/Rainy Day Retreats in Abu Dhabi For Teens

There are some classic indoor retreats in Abu Dhabi. While most teens have no doubt outgrown the typical soft plays, there’s an abundance of indoor arcades and action areas that will keep your older kids busy.

Escape Rooms

A growing trend in the UAE and indeed, around the world is trying to find your way out of an escape room. There are a number of Escape rooms in Abu Dhabi. Some are much scarier than others!

Prison Island is the most family-friendly in Abu Dhabi Mall, whereas Dark Room and Haunted Activity may be a bit too scary for most teenagers and a fair few mums and dads! Note that age restrictions do apply.

Cinemas

Who doesn’t love catching the latest movie with oodles of popcorn and lashings of soda? In Abu Dhabi, you can take the cinema experience to the max.

There are cinemas in every shopping Mall, but the likes of Yas Mall and the Galleria Mall contain plush multiplexes with some truly unique cinema experiences.

Vox cinema’s ‘Theatre’ offers fully reclining seats in private booths and the opportunity to enjoy a three-course a la carte meal whilst you watch the film. For more information about Theatre, click here.

Arcades & VR

Gone are the days when your sproglett wants to jump around in ball pits, but most teenagers are still partial to a few arcade games. Many ‘play centres’ around Abu Dhabi contain soft play for younger children and a gaming zone for tweens and teens.

The newly opened Pixoul Gaming in Al Qana offers a unique new experience for esports lovers, whilst there are often eSport tournaments at various venues around the city.

Orange Hub is another popular indoor choice for teenagers, found in Al Wadha Mall. They have a variety of VR and arcade games.

Zero Latency VR is another to get on your shortlist. Open to over 12’s , this is one of the biggest and best VR experiences in Abu Dhabi, found in Galleria Mall, Al Maryah Island.

Gaming Cafes

For a more cerebral approach to gaming, head to one of Abu Dhabi’s board game cafes, where you can find a huge selection of board and card games. Play as a family, or perhaps find some new board-game crazy friends to play with.

One of the best game cafes is Table Top Tavern, located near Sheikha Fatima Park. As well as board games, you’ll find lots of tasty treats, including a whole host of cakes and shakes.

Get into a good book

Abu Dhabi Children’s Library is designed for children up to the age of 14. While many areas are aimed at younger children, there is an awesome studio space where teens can record their own podcasts, do some coding, or make their own movies.

Unique Dining Experiences For Teens in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is full of unique dining experiences, and there is plenty for your cuisine-loving teen to enjoy. Here are just a few ways to satisfy your teen foody.

Experience gold-plated luxury at the Emirates Palace

Head to Le Cafe at the Emirates Palace for an ice cream or cake topped with real gold leaf. There are lots of delicious treats to choose from in the Parisian-style patisserie.

Take Afternoon Tea

Inspired by the traditional British ‘high tea’, afternoon tea is big in Abu Dhabi. Who wouldn’t be tempted by the chance to spend the afternoon away with lots of delicate little sandwiches and finely crafted pastries?

There’s no shortage of afternoon tea venues to choose from, but one that has the wow factor takes place at The Observation Deck in the Conrad Hotel. Located on the 74th floor of the iconic Etihad Towers, the Observation Deck offers 360° views of the city and Arabian Gulf.

When we talk about brunch in Abu Dhabi, we don’t mean a late-morning combination of breakfast and lunch. Oh, no, Brunch in Abu Dhabi is so much more than that.

From 1 to 4 p.m. on a Saturday, restaurants across the city are transformed into lavish banqueting zones. Here, you can enjoy an unlimited buffet with a whole host of international delicacies.

If you are new to Abu Dhabi and the Middle East region, here are a few things for your teens to keep in mind:

Modesty is required in your wardrobe choices. Whilst the city is becoming a lot more liberal with Western-style clothing, there are some dress code pointers for teens in Abu Dhabi to be aware of:

• A full head covering is not required for non-Muslim girls unless you are entering religious buildings and certain government buildings.
• Bathers and bikinis are permitted in the right setting but don’t forget to be sun-smart too.
• Away from the beach/resort setting, avoid short-shorts, transparent clothing and anything that leaves little to the imagination. Shoulders and knees covered is a very loose rule for when you’re out and about sightseeing, but teens should feel free to dress to the weather.
• Don’t forget hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and a good dose of deodorant!

Also, just a reminder for your teens to keep their behaviour in check too; no profanities, rude gestures, or offensive slogan t-shirts. Petty crime is almost unheard of, but do take sensible precautions and keep an eye on everyone’s belongings.

Kayaking in Abu Dhabi and the mangroves explained

An unmissable stop in Abu Dhabi for nature and outdoor enthusiasts is kayaking in the Mangroves National Park.

A designated national park and protected area on the eastern side of Abu Dhabi island, you’ll find several tour boat operators along the promenade in front of Anantara Eastern Mangroves, including kayaks for hire.

What are the Eastern Mangroves in Abu Dhabi?

The Eastern Mangroves are the gateway to the Mangroves National Park. A truly unique part of the inner city of Abu Dhabi, this protected area makes up around 75% of the total Mangrove area found in the UAE.

A biodiversity hotspot, the mangrove forest is home to many species of marine wildlife, including crabs, herons, flamingos and many fish species. The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) protects the area, so no jet skis, fishing or other sports are permitted in these waters.

Let’s take a detailed look now at how you can explore deep inside the Mangroves.

What Does Eastern Mangroves Kayaking Cost?

This will vary a little by operator and what sort of equipment you want to hire.

Generally speaking, a 2-hour kayak tour costs around 160 AED for adults and 130 AED for kids. You’ll want to allow 2-hours to get into the heart of the mangroves and explore some of the smaller channels.

There are plenty of options, though, for kayaking from Eastern Mangroves. The price will vary depending on the time you want to hire the kayaks, whether you are hiring a single or a double kayak, and the time of day you are heading out.

You may also find some deals paired with meal vouchers from the restaurants around the Eastern Mangroves Promenade.

Night tours and sunset spots tend to go at a premium to day-hire spots. The cost with/without a tour guide is pretty negligible, so we suggest if it’s your first trip, go with the guided tour.

If you really want to learn more about the mangroves, choose a designated eco-tour where you can hear your guide speak more about the native species on your Abu Dhabi kayaking experience.

What Should You Take With You Kayaking in the Eastern Mangroves?

You should wear something you don’t mind getting wet in.

Although it’s unlikely you will fall out of your kayak, do expect that the seat can get wet and splashed from your paddle. You will also have an opportunity to stop for a swim.

You can take anything you want with you on the kayak in a wet bag, though note your tour operator will provide you with water bottles, so there’s really not much you need to take with you.

Taking a smartphone/camera? We recommend buying an easy, waterproof pouch to keep it dry around your neck.

If you want to take a change of clothing and a towel for afterwards, these can be left securely in a water-tight bin at the entrance to the kayaking jetty. You can securely leave your handbags and shoes behind, too.

Don’t forget the obvious, like sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat while you’re out on the water. For the most part, it’s pretty exposed, and you’ll want that extra sun protection.

When should you go kayaking on the Eastern Mangroves?

Although most companies operate year-round, in summer, you will only want to take your kayaks out early morning or late afternoon.

Most operators will take you throughout the day at set times during the cooler winter months.

Another newer option to consider is night tours of the Mangroves for a unique Abu Dhabi experience; you’ll see the marine life in a completely new way.

You can visit the mangroves at both high and low tide, though at low tide, some of the narrow pathways through the thickest of the mangroves will become too shallow.

How to Get to the Kayaking at Eastern Mangroves

From Dubai direction, or anywhere “off island” such as Yas Island, you will take the E10 over the Sheikh Zayed Bridge, then after just a few kilometres on Abu Dhabi island, take the second exit ramp that will be marked to Anantara Eastern Mangroves. Depending on your departure point, it should take just over an hour to get here from Dubai.

If you’re coming from downtown Abu Dhabi, you take Al Salam St. and exit for Eastern Mangroves. Depending on your location and traffic, this can take 15 to 30 minutes.

Plentiful free car parking can be found during the day, though evenings can be a little more congested, especially in the winter peak you may prefer to take a taxi.

Eastern Mangroves is a beautiful, laid-back area of town to enjoy before or after your journey out onto the water.

If you’re not feeling too confident on the water, or perhaps you wish to extend your trip to the Eastern Mangroves a little longer, you can head to the Al Gurm Corniche.

Stretching 4 kilometres from Anantara Eastern Mangroves all the way down to Dolphin Park (19th Street), the newly redeveloped Corniche offers a safe promenade adjacent to the main freeway into the city.

From here, you’ll get a bird’s eye view of the Mangroves National Park, with several little nooks, rest stops, educational sign boards and restrooms along the way.

Well, the old joke goes something like this – ‘I’ve heard that the people in Dubai don’t watch the Flintstones, but the people in Abu Dhabi do,’ and the Flintstones log flume ride at Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi certainly proves that when it comes to having fun, visitors to Abu Dhabi (definitely) do.

Warner Brothers World Abu Dhabi (WB World Abu Dhabi) opened in 2018 and is the region’s largest entirely indoor theme park (it just lost the title as the largest indoor theme park in the world to Chimelong Spaceship, China ⁽¹⁾.

The park covers 1.65 million square feet and is split into six different lands or “zones”, which pay homage to a variety of Warner Brothers’ best-loved characters and franchises, including Batman, Scooby Doo, Tom and Jerry and yes, The Flintstones.

The park is set to expand with an exciting new Harry Potter zone, which will be another reason to visit this fun and friendly one-of-a-kind attraction that’s sure to make you smile.

Where is Warner Brothers World Abu Dhabi, and how can I get there?

Situated on Yas Island, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi is just a stone’s throw from Yas Mall, Ferrari World and the Yas Marina Circuit. It is also within walking distance of Yas Waterworld. You are less than a 10-minute drive from Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) and about 30 minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi.

• From Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station (Al Wadha bus station), you can take the 102 bus to Yas Island, AED 4, allowing 50 minutes, and you’ll need a Hafilat bus card. Alternatively, a taxi from central Abu Dhabi will cost around AED 60 and takes around 30 minutes.

There are also complimentary shuttle buses from Abu Dhabi International Airport to Yas Island (see schedule), and even a free shuttle service from Dubai to Yas Island.

What is there to do at Warner Brothers World Abu Dhabi?

The theme park is split into six sections. Each zone includes shops, places to eat and drink and other activities as well as rides.

Rides and Other Attractions

The central plaza area is set up like a town square, with shops and cafes flanking an open space with fountains and stage areas. This forms the heart of the theme park and is where many of the shows happen.

A real highlight is the ‘Magic of Film’ show, which uses video screens, sound effects and light projections to really capture the magic of cinema and features many of Warner Brothers’ most famous films. You can capture the show just before opening time – making it well worth your while to get in before the gates officially open.

Family Friendly Fun

To the right of the plaza are the more child-friendly zones; these are Bedrock, Dynamite Gulch and Cartoon Junction. Here you will find the following rides:

• The Flintstones Bedrock River Adventure – Join Fred and Wilma as they go about their day on this invigorating log-flume ride – a chance you’ll get wet but not drenched!
• Fast and Furry-ous – Dip into canyons and curve around mountains on this exciting roller-coaster.
• The Jetsons Cosmic Orbitor – Take a spin in your very own spacecraft on this family-friendly ride.
• Marvin the Martian Crater Crashers – A cosmic take on bumper cars.
• Tom & Jerry Swiss Cheese Spin – An exhilarating, adrenaline-boosting rollercoaster that sees Tom chasing Jerry!
• Scooby-Doo: The Museum of Mysteries – Join Scooby and the gang as they gather clues in this mysterious family-friendly ride.

To the left of the Plaza is the more grown-up superhero zone. The two distinct areas mimic the streets of Gotham City and an area of Metropolis.

Most of the bigger, scarier rides are located in the superhero zone. Rides and attractions include:

• The Batman Knight Flight – A high-speed, high-speed ride through the dark skies of Gotham.

• The Riddler Revolution – A rocking, spinning rollercoaster ride.

Shows and Character Meet and Greets

Numerous shows take place throughout the day and there are plenty of chances to meet and greet your favourite characters across the park. Show times change depending on the day and season but are clearly displayed on electronic screens throughout the park.

There are professional photographers on site to take pictures of you with your favourite characters. These can be purchased at the exit to the park. You are allowed to take your own photos inside the park, but you should avoid taking pictures of people that you don’t know without their consent.

Where can I eat at Warner Brothers World Abu Dhabi?

There are a variety of eateries throughout the park serving everything from fast food to sit-down a la carte dinners.

• Big Belly Burger is a popular choice in the Metropolis area. This outlet specialises in burgers, hotdogs and waffles. There is also a small snack shack in the Metropolis area selling hot and cold drinks, pop corn and ice creams.

• Another fantastic burger option can be found at the Bronto Burger and Ribs restaurant in Bedrock, where the giant ‘Bronco Burger’ is sure to blow you away. Other choices include fried chicken strips and sticky ribs as well as a very tasty falafel burger.

• The Starlight Restaurant in the town square area of the park offers a sophisticated space serving delicious a la carte options with friendly and attentive table service. The menu changes periodically, but main courses have included herb-crusted salmon with puréed spinach and potato gnocchi, lamb chops with potato purée and roasted vegetables and wild mushroom ravioli with asparagus and cheddar cheese.

• La Trattoria, also in the town square offers pizza slices, pasta and salads, whereas the Beverley Hills Boulangerie serves up a variety of sandwiches and delicious cakes and pastries; it’s also the only place in the park where you can find decaffeinated coffee.

In addition to the main restaurants, there are also plenty of places to buy sweets, candy floss, popcorn and ice cream throughout the site.

Special Celebrations at Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi

No season goes without celebration at Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi. There are special events to mark every occasion, from Ramadan to Christmas, Easter to Halloween. If your visit coincides with a special event, it is really worth visiting the theme park for a touch of holiday magic.

More Still to Come at Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi

In 2022, it was announced(²) that Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi would be adding a Harry Potter-themed land to their existing lineup. No dates have been announced as yet, so you’ll need to stay tuned for this exciting development!

NB despite messaging of “opening soon,” we can’t see Harry Potter opening at WB World Abu Dhabi until at least late 2025 – but we’ll keep you posted.

How much are the tickets for Warner Brothers Abu Dhabi?

• Single-day tickets purchased online in advance cost AED 345 for Adults
• AED 250 for Juniors (Anyone under 1.1m in height, excluding children under three who are admitted for free)
• Adult tickets bought at the gate cost 10% more – so it is well worth purchasing your tickets ahead of time, and you’ll get to skip the queues.

Multi-park theme park tickets for Yas Island

Multi-day tickets can also be purchased, combining entry to WB World with either Yas Waterworld, SeaWorld Yas Island or Ferrari World. You have 14 days to use the multip-park passes for Yas Island.

Presently (as of October 2023), the online price for the Yas theme parks is:

• 1 park from AED 345
• 2 parks from AED 475
• 3 parks from AED 575
• 4 parks from AED 675

Note you pay 10% more for buying tickets at the gate; it’s always best to purchase online in advance. Multi-day Yas theme park tickets are valid for 14 days. These can be purchased from any of the theme park websites or we recommend reputable local ticketing agent Platinumlist.

Annual passes are also available for people staying in Abu Dhabi long term, with prices starting at AED 1295 per year (though do look out for Ramadan and Eid special offers!)

Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi is accessible to people with mobility problems and other disabilities. There are accessible toilets and ramps throughout the park.

Some rides and experiences are not suitable for people with specific medical problems or for expectant mothers. Information about ride accessibility is available both in the park and on the Warner Brothers World Abu Dhabi website.

Warner Bros Abu Dhabi Dress Code

Unlike other religious and political buildings in Abu Dhabi, where a strict dress code is enforced, theme parks are almost anything goes – within moderation! Always keep the Abu Dhabi dress code in mind when it comes to anything overtly showing too much skin.

• We would suggest comfortably dressing in jeans/trousers and t-shirts or respectable-length shorts and t-shirts. None of the rides are overly strenuous, and whilst there is one water ride, you’d be unlucky to get totally drenched – all the water action is saved for next door at Yas Waterworld.

• We’ve never noticed the air conditioning being particularly fierce (as it can be in some Abu Dhabi indoor venues), but you wouldn’t be out of place with some sort of cardigan or pullover.

• Always wear comfortable theme park footwear, as there’s a lot of walking; even indoors, you’ll get those steps! You can wear sandals/flip-flops but will be asked to remove such footwear on some rides; you are better off with trainers for all-day comfort. You’ll need closed-toe shoes on if you’re looking to undertake Teen Titans (which includes climbing and ropes).

• If kids want to dress up in their favourite characters’ costumes, that’s fine. In fact on some special days they even give away free superhero capes for the kiddos.

• We would avoid too much dangling jewellery and accessories as there will be many rides you’ll be asked to remove these. Ladies’ abayas are fine, but you’ll be asked to secure them on some rides.

Where can I stay close to Warner Brothers World Abu Dhabi?

The closest hotels are The WB Hotel, Curio Collection By Hilton and the DoubleTree by Hilton Residences, both within walking distance of the park. The WB Hotel is the world’s first Warner Brothers-themed hotel where you can get the full character experience.

Rooms are decorated with a Warner Brothers twist, and Bugs Bunny and other Looney Tune favourites will join you for breakfast, lunch and dinner in the Sidekicks Restaurant. There is a large outdoor pool terrace, open-air cinema, a fitness centre, and a spa.

There is also an adults-only rooftop pool and bar area, perfect for when you’ve dropped off the kids at the amazing kids’ club, which offers indoor and outdoor activities, a games hub, a dive-in theatre and a splash pad for the little ones.

Staying anywhere on Yas Island is convenient for the trio of theme parks, and many hotels on Yas Island have deals which include theme park tickets, so it’s well worth comparing deals and inclusions.

Not for the faint-hearted, dune bashing – literally driving up and down sand dunes at speed – is something that many desert safaris offer as part of their itinerary. While many tourists find it appealing in recent years, dune bashing has come under fire for its negative impact on the delicate desert ecosystem.

Is dune bashing safe? Dune bashing is usually done in specially adapted four-wheel drive vehicles fitted with seat belts. Drivers are usually highly skilled and trained and stick to designated routes through the desert – if you book with a reputable company.

Grab your board and let the dunes take you! Sandboarding is an extreme sport similar to snowboarding and demands some skill and a good sense of balance. Participants can stand, sit, lie on their boards, and move across or directly down the dunes.

Closed-toed trainers and socks are recommended for this activity.

Speed across the desert on a quad bike

Another way to get to grips with the desert is by quad bike. Some packages include this, whilst some will charge extra when you get out into the desert. Remember to check your itinerary closely before booking if this is something that you really want to do, as it’s not an automatic inclusion.

Have a henna tattoo

Henna tattoos have been worn by the woman of the region for centuries and are offered to visitors at most desert camps and on many desert safaris. Tattoos are traditionally painted on brides’ hands, arms and feet and are thought to bring good fortune.

In the past, designs would differ from tribe to tribe, but nowadays, henna artists usually carry a portfolio of designs for customers to choose from. The henna will last about two weeks before fading – always a fun souvenir of your time in Abu Dhabi.

Not recommended for sensitive skin or people with G6PD deficiency.

Enjoy a Camel Ride

Riding into the desert sunset on a camel is a dream for many, whilst for others, it can be a complete nightmare! Remember to follow your guide’s instructions and lean backwards when the camel stands up or sits down to avoid injuries.

Most desert safaris offer short camel treks of 10-20 minutes as well as longer treks for the more adventurous, often for an additional fee.

Camel riding is not for everyone and is not recommended for pregnant women or people with serious musculoskeletal injuries as well as very young children.

You are bound to get plenty of opportunities to interact with the camels and take some photos, even if you’re not too keen on taking a ride.

Indulge in some belly dancing

Some camps and desert safaris offer belly dancing as entertainment. Belly dancing has its origins in ancient Egypt but was practised widely throughout the Middle East until the rise of Islam.

Nowadays, belly dancing is performed for tourists in the UAE, but many conservative Muslims still consider it haram (against the teachings of Islam).

Be mesmerized by a Tanoura Dance

Sometimes as an alternative to belly dancing and sometimes to complement it, a captivating tanoura dance might be offered. Another dance originating in Egypt, tanoura gets its name from the characteristic skirt worn by the dancer. Dancers are uniquely, always male, and spin around, allowing their elaborate skirts to extend outwards like a hypnotic parachute.

Note that if you book your safari to coincide with a religious holiday, including the holy month of Ramadan, no entertainment will be provided.

Smoke shisha

Many visitors to the Middle East like to try smoking shisha, and on a desert safari, you can do this in the unique setting under desert stars.

Whilst shisha does contain fewer chemicals than cigars and cigarettes, it is still harmful and can affect blood pressure and cause heart disease and lung cancer if smoked regularly.

Let your taste buds be tantalized by an Arabic BBQ

Many desert safaris include what is known as an Arabic barbecue meal. The barbecue often contains a selection of delicious meze style starters such as hummus (chickpea dip), moutabal (aubergine dip), fattoush salad (lettuce, cucumber, tomato, radishes, onion, pomegranate and molasses), olives, mixed pickles and Arabic bread.

Main dishes at an Arabic BBQ include various grilled meats and kebabs; this often includes the very popular ‘shish tawook’ (chicken marinated in garlic sauce and grilled on skewers). Sitting around the campfire, talking about the day’s activities whilst indulging in this tasty feast, is the perfect way to end the day.

Note that some camps and safaris will provide alcohol at an additional cost, but this is obviously not part of the traditional Arabic meal.

Morning, Afternoon or Overnight safari?

Whether to spend just a few hours in the desert or stay overnight is really up to you as there are a variety of options on offer. Afternoon desert safaris tend to take off after the day’s heat has gone and can easily be fitted into a one-day Abu Dhabi itinerary. In contrast, morning safaris focus more on the desert itself than on entertainment. 

If you have time within your schedule, an overnight stay is highly recommended as you get to see the desert in all of its glory at sunset and sunrise; it also gives you a greater chance of encountering wildlife as the creatures of the desert are more active during the night time and the twilight hours.

An overnight safari also offers the chance to stargaze and take in majestic and unpolluted night sky views.

How can I book an Abu Dhbai desert safari?

A morning safari option with OceanAir Travels

OceanAir Travels offer a good value morning safari with pick-up from your hotel. After the 45-minute drive to the desert, the package includes dune bashing, sand-boarding, a camel ride and a visit to a camel farm where you can feed the camels. Complementary water is also included.  This package does not include quad biking, nor does it include any snacks, but you will be back in the city by lunchtime.

Note that whilst pregnant women and children under three are prohibited from dune bashing, for this tour, a private driver can be arranged to drive at control level so that nobody misses out on the experience.

Afternoon/evening desert safaris

There are many similar afternoon/evening safaris to choose from, but Offroad Adventure Tours offers one of the best. You will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the desert, where you can enjoy dune bashing, camel rides and sandboarding. There is also the opportunity for exploring the desert on quad bikes and dune buggies for an additional fee.

Once the action is over, you will head to the desert camp, which offers the chance to get henna tattoos and meet a falcon, as well as a mini photo shoot in traditional dress. The evening is rounded off with a tanoura show and belly dancing to accompany your Arabic buffet-style dinner.

Alcohol is available at an additional cost, although shisha is included in the price.

Another highly recommended evening safari is through Desert Rose Tourism. In addition to the more standard safari packages, Desert Rose can also organise private romantic sunset dinners amongst the dunes.

If you want to forego the high-adrenaline sports, there are camel trekking and desert camp options that are at a slower pace, such as the evening camel trek offered by OceanAir travels.

Like most other desert safari options, you will be picked up from your hotel and driven to the desert, where you will take a 50-minute camel ride before being treated to an Arabic buffet and traditional entertainment, including tanoura and belly dancing.

Note this excursion is not suitable for pregnant women or children under 5.

Overnight safari & desert camps

There’s nothing like camping under the stars to truly appreciate the vastness of the empty quarter. Don’t worry though; it’s not all tents and improvised campfires. There are numerous permanent camps, glamping spots or desert hotels with camping options to suit even the most reluctant camper.

Best Overnight Desert Camping for Families

One of our favourite glamping options can be found at Arabian Nights Village, where you can stay in a variety of traditionally built Emirati homes. When you arrive, you will be able to walk the dunes, sand-board, go for a short camel ride, have a henna tattoo or opt to take out a dune buggy for an additional fee.

There’s a lovely swimming pool and al fresco dining area, where you can enjoy an Arabian buffet-style dinner whilst listening to the dulcet tones of the Arabian Oud as the sun goes down. You might even join the belly dancers up on stage after your meal!

The entertainment finishes around 9:00 PM as many day visitors return to Abu Dhabi, leaving overnight guests with the opportunity to sit around the bonfires and while away the evening observing the night sky. A buffet breakfast is served in the indoor restaurant in the morning, and there is time for more sand boarding, swimming, or an extended sunrise camel ride.

Best overnight desert camping in Abu Dhabi for adventurers

A slightly more rough and tumble option is provided by Capital Gate Tourism, who will pick you up around 3-4 pm from the city and take you into the desert, where you will experience; dune bashing, a visit to a camel farm and a camel ride. There are also the options of having a henna tattoo and smoking shisha.

The evening is rounded off with an Arabic BBQ, tanoura show and belly dancing around the campfire. All camping gear, including tents and sleeping bags, is provided, and staff stay overnight at the campsite with you, and breakfast is provided the next morning.

Alcohol is available at an extra charge. You will arrive back in the city around 9 am.

Best luxury desert glamping

At the top end of the scale, the beautiful 5-star Qasr al Sarab Hotel in Liwa, now offers their own luxury camping experience at Camp Nujum for guests staying at the resort.

What to pack for an Abu Dhabi Desert Safari

Whilst it’s a good idea to travel light, there are some items that we would recommend taking with you to make your safari as enjoyable as possible:

• Wear loose clothing made from natural fibres. Remember to observe the local dress code and not wear anything too revealing. Ladies should avoid short skirts as they are not very practical and meals are often eaten on the floor.
• Closed-toe trainers for sandboarding and a spare pair of flip-flops for other activities.
• Something to wrap around your head and face to protect you from the sand and dust -especially during quad biking and camel riding.
• A wrap, sweater or a cardigan – the evenings can get chilly in the desert, especially in the winter!
• Sunscreen and a hat if any portion of your trip is during the day.
• Take sanitiser and sanitize before eating and after touching camels.
• Take tissues and wet wipes, especially if you’re travelling with children (see advice above on travelling with children).

Tips on taking kids on desert safaris

Whilst a desert safari might seem like great fun for the whole family, please be aware of what you are getting into if you are taking kids to the desert! Not all of the activities on a desert safari are suitable for young children and they may find times when they feel excluded.

Here are some handy tips to help keep the little ones happy so that the whole family can enjoy the experience!

1. Keep them busy:

• Encourage children to use all of their senses in the desert and pay attention to what they see, hear and feel.
• Take a notebook and pencils for them to sketch or a disposable camera or old phone for them to take photos.
• You could buy a desert guide aimed at children like this one from Greenfeet Guides.
• Warn children not to wander off or turn over stones – the desert is home to more than a few poisonous creepy crawlies!

2. Don’t forget the practical stuff:

• Apply high-factor sunscreen before you set off.
• Wear loose-fitting clothing made of natural fibres.
• Drink plenty of water throughout the excursion.
• For toilet training kids – carry a port-a-potty, and have biodegradable tissues, hand sanitiser and biodegradable wipes with you (remember to take all of your litter home or use designated bins).
• Carry snacks in case the Arabic meal is not to your little ones’ taste.
  

Other tips for a Desert Safari in Abu Dhabi

If you’re undertaking a desert safari, it’s important to feel comfortable. We recommend dressing in relatively loose-fitting clothes with long sleeves made from natural fibres to protect you from the sun and any unwanted insect bites. A wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap is also a must.

In terms of foot ware, socks and trainers are best for most activities, although you may want to carry a pair of flip-flops with you. Don’t forget to slap on the high-factor sunscreen and drink plenty on the day.

Most importantly, don’t eat anything immediately before dune bashing, as the extreme motions can make you feel very nauseous!

It may be worth checking your travel insurance policy before booking a desert safari, as some of the more extreme activities may not be covered.

Circuit X Abu Dhabi is the family-centric centre for adventure on Al Hudayriyat Island, Abu Dhabi.

Get set for action packed outdoor time when you hit Abu Dhabi with your kids.

Yas Island may be the most famous of Abu Dhabi’s islands for it’s great selection of theme parks and entertainment venues, but up and coming leisure island Al Hudayriyat is certainly giving it a run for it’s money when it comes to seeking out action-packed sporting activities.

One of the highlights of visiting Al Hudayriyat Island is exploring the four activity parks on offer by Circuit X.

Spread across two locations on the island, Circuit X is aimed at your active kids & families offering a Ropes Park, BMX Park, Skate Park and Splash Park.

Let’s take a closer look at each and exactly what you can expect.

Where to find Circuit X Abu Dhabi

Al Hudayriyat Island is a long sand island that sits immediately to the west of the main Abu Dhabi island. From the end of 19th Street, a bridge extends over to Al Hudayriyat. Once across the bridge, head right at the first round about.

You will follow the signs to the Adventure Village for the Ropes Park and BMX Park. Here you will also find the large dome of 321 Sports, OCR Park and the luxury glamping site Bab Al Najoum. (See here on Google Maps)

The Skate Park and Splash Park are set in the waterfront area of Marsana, adjacent to the Al Hudayriyat beach. (See here on Google Maps)

The two locations aren’t really walking distance apart so you will want to take you car between the two if planning a full day out.

Tickets for each are sold separately for each park – we’ll detail below current costs and opening hours for all the parks (accurate as at March 2022).

Ropes Park at Circuit X

The Ropes Park at Circuit X offers three levels of high rope challenges, plus three extra adrenaline challenges you can add on to your experience.

High Ropes Course

For your kids 7 years+ (over 121cm), they can start with the Green Kids circuit which takes them on an introductory loop of different obstacles.

If they are confident, they can move on to the Blue Scout Circuit for their second lap (recommended for 11 years plus but any kid whose undertaken a ropes course before will find the Green Course really easy).

The Extreme Black Circuit at a rather breathtaking 10 metres above the ground is for your teens, only 15-years-old+.

Freefall & Zip Line

Once you’ve finished the ropes course, there are two fun ways to get down again; freefall or zip line.

The Freefall allows participants to plunge 13 metres to the ground in a controlled platform jump. Meanwhile zip line travels from the highest point in the ropes course 100 metres across the whole BMX park beneath.

Climbing wall

The climbing wall is open to kids from 110cm/6 years old. The 50ft high wall is certainly one of the most challenging open to kids in Abu Dhabi in the younger age group. Helpful and friendly staff are on hand throughout the park for safety, guidance and encouragement.

Circuit X Ropes Park Cost

There are various different pricing packages for Circuit X depending on how many activities you’d like to participate in.

The most popular is the Extreme Package which allows kids to tackle all the rope park attractions for 110AED. Two rounds of just the high ropes course is 60 AED.

• Rush Package (Ropes + 1 Activity) 90 AED
• Level-Up Package (Ropes + 2 activities) 95 AED

Closed toe shoes must be worn and appropriate clothing. Kids can be left with staff supervision.

BMX Park at Circuit X

The BMX Park is situated at the same location and includes an asphalt pump track and dirt trail with 15 different corners, custom built ramps and hills for kids to try out their moves. You can BYO bike, or hire your bike and safety gear at the venue.

The minimum age is 7 years old, with coaches on hand. Children over 12 years old can enter without the supervision of an adult.

Light bites and drinks can be purchased at the venue for participants and spectators. There are also toilets and change rooms on hand.

Circuit X BMX Park Cost

You can pay for a one or two hour package to simply use the track with your own bike and safety gear for:

• Pump Up (Entry & helmet) 30 mins 25 AED
• Pump Up (Entry & helmet) 1 hour 40 AED

Or if you don’t have your own kit, go for the X-UP package to borrow bike, helmet and PPE, all santized between each use for:

• 30 Minutes 50 AED
• 1 hour 80 AED

Circuit X Skate Park

Sitting inside the beach side complex of Marsana you’ll find the Circuit X Skate Park. Under shade for year-round enjoyment (though it does get hot mid summer, hours are restricted) this is the perfect spot for beginners through to advanced boarders and skaters to try out their moves.

The park includes a training area, street-style walls, quarter pipes, bridges, ledges, handrails, and three bowls. Helmets and closed shoes are compulsory and coaches are on hand for your newbies and private lessons.

You can BYO skateboard or scooters, or hire all your equipment and safety gear there.

Circuit X Skate Park Cost

Children from 5 years of age +. One adult supervisor is allowed with children 5 to 8 years of age. Older children are left in the care of park staff.

• Ollie Package 2 hours (entry & helmet) 60 AED
• Kickflip package 1 hour (entry, helmet, equipment & PPE) 1 hour 70 AED

Circuit X Skate Park Timing

8:00 PM to 10:00 PM on a Sunday is reserved for skaters 13 years +; this is the only time BMX are also allowed within the skate park.

There were originally staggered time slots for the little ones on a weekend but this seems to have been abolished.

Circuit X Splash & Climb Park

Immediately adjacent to the Al Hudayriyat beachfront at Marsana, you’ll find the Splash & Climb Park. Ideal for your slightly younger ones (though open to kids up to 12 years of age), the park is split into a wet and dry area.

In the splash park you’ll find not just fountains and squirters, but a huge vertical climbing maze. Meanwhile on the ‘dry’ side of the park there are further climbing structures and a pirate ship takes centre stage.

There is also an adjoining temperature-controlled infinity pool which is available for events and private hire, perfect for sunset views over the beach.

NB Guests need to be in proper beach swim attire, no cotton overclothes allowed. The area is mostly covered but it’s best to have your kids in a rash guard top along with their bathers. Under 3’s must wear swim diapers.

Circuit X Splash & Climb Park Cost

The park is for Children 1 to 12 years old. One adult goes free with a child 1 to 3-years-old. Children aged 4-years-old and over can be left with park staff for supervision.

If your looking for other ways to keep entertained on Hudayriyat island there’s no shortage of options.

It is a hugely popular destination for bikers of all experience levels with dedicated bike lanes that traverse the island. Type in Wolfi’s on Google Maps for the starting point of the 5km and 10km tracks.

Beachfront dining is an obvious option with all restaurants across the water front now fully open in 2022. The beach itself includes numerous deckchairs and umbrellas (free, first come, first served), as well as showers and change facilities.
