Abu Dhabi’s public light art exhibition, Manar Abu Dhabi, returns for its second edition this winter, illuminating the capital and Al Ain with a dazzling collection of large-scale light sculptures and immersive installations.

Organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), the new edition builds on the success of its 2023–24 debut, which transformed the city’s beaches, islands, and mangroves into glowing works of art.

This year’s theme, The Light Compass, draws inspiration from the Gulf’s historical relationship with light as a guiding force — both as a tool for navigation and as a symbol of hope and discovery.

Running from 1 November 2025 to 4 January 2026 in Al Ain, and 15 November 2025 to 4 January 2026 in Abu Dhabi, Manar Abu Dhabi 2025–26 brings together 15 Emirati and international artists and collectives from 10 countries, featuring 23 site-specific light sculptures, projections, and installations.

A Celebration of Art, Light, and Nature

This year’s exhibition will span four key locations — Jubail Island, Souq Al Mina, and, for the first time, Al Ain’s Al Qattara and Al Jimi Oases. Each site offers a unique encounter with light art, connecting natural landscapes with creative innovation.

Jubail Island serves as the exhibition’s anchor, where large-scale light sculptures and interactive works by Pamela Poh, DRIFT, Shaikha Al Mazrou, and Montreal-based studio Iregular will merge art, technology, and nature. The installations are designed to respond to the island’s tranquil mangrove ecosystem, reflecting the exhibition’s commitment to sustainability and the environment.

In Al Ain, the lush Al Qattara and Al Jimi Oases will glow with illuminated art trails exploring the theme of water as life’s source. Emirati artists Ammar Al Attar, Khalid Shafar, Maitha Hamdan, and Abdulla Al Mulla will present new works alongside internationally acclaimed names Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and Christian Brinkmann, creating a dialogue between heritage, ecology, and contemporary expression.

Meanwhile, Souq Al Mina promises one of the season’s most anticipated highlights — KAWS:HOLIDAY Abu Dhabi, presented by renowned artist KAWS in collaboration with AllRightsReserved. The monumental illuminated sculpture depicts KAWS’s signature COMPANION figure gently lifting a glowing moon, a poetic symbol of reflection and connection under the night sky.

The sunny skies and marginally milder days that descend upon Abu Dhabi in October might be deceiving, but make no mistake: Halloween is a Fall seasonal celebration that’s embraced in Abu Dhabi and the UAE!

Local children will participate in “traditional” trick-or-treating on the evening of 31 October, especially in the expat housing estates. However, elsewhere in the city, there are plenty of other ways to celebrate the spooky month and dress up for the occasion in the prior weeks.

Siddharta Lounge at The Trilogy by Buddha Bar

One of the newest additions to Abu Dhabi’s nightlife scene is the Trilogy by Buddha Bar at Yas Bay. The three-venue concept includes the Arabian-inspired Bushra restaurant, Zeera, which serves contemporary Indian cuisine, and the swanky rooftop Siddharta Lounge.

A delicious tapas-style menu, sophisticated signature cocktails and views across the water make Siddharta Lounge a popular spot to chill out. As the sun sets, the atmosphere intensifies with a live DJ, dancers, and acrobats on weekends and on ladies’ nights (Thursdays), making an evening at Siddharta Lounge one of a kind.

Hidden Bar

Hidden, as its name suggests, inside the Rosewood Hotel is the oh-so-chic Hidden Bar. Specializing in gin, the lounge bar regularly runs a ‘Gin O’clock’ promotion, which includes 2 hours of unlimited G&Ts, house grapes and hops and an antipasti board for AED 188.

There’s a cosy outdoor terrace offering magnificent views over the water towards downtown Abu Dhabi as well as live piano music. The chilled-out vibe is perfect after you’ve spent the day at work or the beach.

The Warehouse Wine & Tapas Bar

The Warehouse is one of the best bars in Abu Dhabi for a sophisticated yet unpretentious night out. The decor complements the bar’s focus on tapas and fine wines from around the world, with grape barrels and leather sofas giving the bar a winery vibe.

Hidden within this unassuming corner of town, there’s a lively atmosphere, good music, and loads of wine-paired deals throughout the week. An amazing promo available every day of the week is the persuasively named ‘Cheese and Wine not?’, which serves up two hours of limitless grapes, cheese, and cold cuts for 160 AED per head.

Cooper’s

Pubs in Abu Dhabi, like Cooper’s, make for a more casual night if you’re looking for great beer and conversation away from the dress codes and flashing lights. The informal venue has dark furniture, patterned carpets and barrel tables to give it that British pub vibe and decent prices on nicely chilled beer.

Match days bring in sizeable crowds to watch the action on big screens in their sports bar and get the atmosphere pumping. Ray’s Bar

An oldie but a goldie on the Abu Dhabi lounge scene, Ray’s Bar is every bit as glamorous as you expect the city of Abu Dhabi to be as the sun comes down.

Situated on the 62nd floor of the glorious Etihad Towers, this cocktail lounge is the perfect spot to have sundowners and enjoy the wonderful ambience of the city from above at Abu Dhabi’s highest bar.

Deserving of the hype it receives, it’s the place we always take our visitors to town that never fails to impress with the floor-to-ceiling glass windows offering panoramic city views. Weekends often feature live bands and regular DJ entertainment to take you well into the evening in Abu Dhabi’s hottest address.

Smart casual is required to enter, and there is strictly no sportswear.

Drinking in Abu Dhabi – The Rules

Whilst the legal drinking age in Abu Dhabi is actually 18, licensed venues are only allowed to sell alcohol to people over the age of 21.

The UAE maintains strict rules regarding public decorum and decency. Whilst alcohol is increasingly available and is often at the heart of nightlife in Abu Dhabi, it is still illegal to be ’drunk’ in public, and public displays of affection continue to be frowned upon.

You may see some people flaunting these rules, but we encourage you to exercise caution when under the influence of alcohol in Abu Dhabi and the UAE.

Fitness & Sports After Dark in Abu Dhabi

If you’re not into the bar scene and would rather use the peaceful, cooler hours of the day to enjoy the outdoors, there are several options after dark:

• The Corniche is always a favorite after dark. Whether you run, hire a bicycle or scooter, or simply take a leisurely stroll, the 8-kilometer-long stretch of coast is the city’s most popular spot at night.
• New in summer 2025, you can now enjoy swimming at night, from the floodlit beach at Marsana East, Hudayriyat Island. Note, there is an entry charge now to enter the beach.
• Summer also brings the return of Abu Dhabi Summer of Sports. Held in air-conditioned comfort at ADNEC, the facilities here are vast. Covering sports from football to padel, action cricket or badminton, you can get your exercise fix until 1:00 AM nightly, until 21 August 2025.
• Night golf can also be enjoyed under floodlights at Abu Dhabi City Golf Club, with tee-off times up to 9:30 pm (9 holes, 18 holes must tee off by 7:30 pm).
• Fancy taking a lap of the Grand Prix track? Twice a week, the gates at Yas Marina Circuit open to cyclists, runners, and walkers to take on the track with TrainYas. This is one of the best free things to do at night in Abu Dhabi!

The Keg Room

The new kid on the block, this Aussie-themed local pub is a sports fan’s delight. Multiple screens across the room broadcast everything from Aussie Rules Football and the NRL to the EPL and cricket.

The food is on point, too, with a distinctly Aussie menu, generous portion sizes, and reasonable drink prices (catch Happy Hour midday to 7:00 PM daily). Breakfast has just been introduced on Saturdays and Sundays. Yep, there’s avo on toast while you watch the AFL action!

In the winter months, the Al Zeina Plaza area also features an outdoor beer garden with plenty of room for kids to scoot and run about.

The Irish Vickers (WTC & Al Raha Beach)

With two branches, one at the World Trade Centre on Abu Dhabi Corniche and the other at the Al Raha Beach Hotel, the Irish Vickers has sports fans in Abu Dhabi covered.

The Al Raha Beach branch contains all that you could ask for in a sports bar: authentic decor, live music, plenty of screens, as well as dart boards and pool tables. It also serves up some excellent pub grub, just like its brother at the WTC.

Baloo’s Social Bar & Grill

Just upstairs from Victor’s (although it is important to note that it is entirely separately run) is the city’s newest sporting venue, which is heavily influenced by rugby and all things South African sports. The venue is huge with a multitude of screens inside and out, and very reasonably priced.

Touted as a completely family-friendly venue, this is where you come to enjoy everything from the big match being played to enjoying a braai, taking a dip in the pool, or playing darts and arcade games. One of the city’s best new all-rounder venues is definitely worth a visit in 2026.

Offside Gastropub

A cosy and welcoming sports bar inside one of Abu Dhabi’s premier beach resorts, Offside Gastropub features a scrumptious menu of smoked meats (think ribs and brisket, burgers and pub classics, fish and chips) as well as meter-long hot dogs! There’s a dedicated kids’ menu as well as theme nights. Thursdays are ‘British Curry’ night, whereas Tuesdays see mussels on the menu.

A real-feel British Pub with indoor and outdoor spaces and multiple screens offering various day-to-day sports. You can check online here for more details about what will be shown and when.

There’s a great selection of food and drink with daily promotions (12.00 pm until 8.00 pm Sunday to Friday and 4.00 pm until 8.00 pm on Saturdays). Bottled beers start at 23 AED, with selected cocktails at 27 AED.

Sneaking in late to our list is another relatively new opening on the terrace at Yas Links, the Crafty Fox Gastropub.

With plenty of screens spotted around the pub for all the sporting action, as well as pool tables and an al fresco terrace bringing stunning golf course views, this is a cosy spot for your sporting action with an alfresco touch this year. Note its a 21+ only venue.

Yes, the conservative Muslim city of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, has just seen the opening of its first brewery. Yes, the drinks have alcohol. And yup, there are meals served, too. And yup, they are doing it well.

Let’s take a look at exactly what you can expect at CRAFT by Side Hustle, the latest premium dining venue to open on Abu Dhabi’s exclusive Al Maryah Island.

Already home to a string of luxury shops and hotels, will a Western-styled microbrewery concept really work in the capital?

What’s the Story Behind Craft

So before we get into the tasty bits, how did a brewery come to be – the first of its kind in the Middle East region?

Side Hustle, as a brand, is not new to the UAE. Their distinctive ‘homegrown’ cans started popping up some years ago and could be found in venues such as Stars N Bars, onboard Etihad Airlines flights, and in select bottle stores.

Branded as the UAE’s first beer, the actual brewing and canning process took place in the US. Things changed, though, in 2021 with a little-known rule change that allowed for fermentation to take place in Abu Dhabi emirate, as long as consumption is on-premises.

Side Hustle Brews and Spirits co-founder Chad McGhee, used this opportunity to establish the first microbrewery in the United Arab Emirates. They still can’t package and sell their brews for off-site consumption, but you can enjoy your drinks in the new upscale microbrewery and gastropub venue in the city.

At any given time, the taps at Craft by Side Hustle will serve around five to ten locally made brews, with plans to make around 75 different brews in their opening year. The Al Maryah-based brewery has the capacity to produce 25,000 pints per month, with each beer taking around three weeks to brew under the watchful eye of brewmaster Mitchell Dougherty.

Dining at CRAFT by Side Hustle

Great attention has been paid to ensuring the food is on par, not just a poor second at this gastropub. On the extensive menu, you can expect many classic gastropub dishes from Head Chef Troy Payne.

The theme is distinctly southern US cuisine, with shrimp, jambalaya and brisket featured on the main menu, plus a hearty selection of Smokehouse platters with sides. Homemade sourdough pizzas, burger buns and hot sauces are a really nice touch. Everything is made fresh in-house, and portion sizes are generous and hearty.

Vegetarians will be pleased to hear there’s a great selection, including a vegetarian platter you don’t often see. Our veggie friends can enjoy the smokehouse goodness, too, with corn, cauliflower and pumpkin the stars. Salads and lighter bites are available on the menu, too.

The desserts are worth saving some stomach room for with the Mississippi Mudcake and the Steam Toffee Pudding with rum and raisin custard a HUGE hit at our table!

The Beers at Craft by Side Hustle

OK, we won’t keep you holding any longer, the beers! We are familiar with a number of their brands that have slowly crept onto local alcohol shelves since they were introduced back in 2019, with hot favourites Jetlag Relief Pale Ale and Slipstream IPA regularly appearing in our home bar, so were we in for something new?

Yes, the taps at CRAFT by Side Hustle offer their own unique brews that will appeal to their broad expat audience, including Beach Day (Blonde Ale), Cloudy Wit (Belgian Wit) and Exhaust-ed (Session IPA) among our favourites.

If you’re unsure where to start, the tasting paddle is absolutely the way to go. Each taster is just AED 12 for a 4-ounce pour – choose as many as you’d like. The number of beers on tap for tasting is variable, but you should be able to get around 10-12 on any given visit.

You can scan the QR code on the bar if you need more information on each of the beers (and also really easily pay and split bills).

Craft beer-tasting connoisseurs will love the plans for seasonal batches, so your punters can return regularly for new flavours every time.

Expect to pay, on average, AED 50 for a 500 ml pour (neither an American nor a UK pint, go figure!)

Non-beer drinkers, you won’t be left disappointed either, as there are many craft cocktails on the menu using their branded Jetlag Relief Dry Hopped Gin, Straight Bourbon Wsky and Lost Barrels Louisiana Rum.

This is backed up by a brilliant selection of familiar brand-name spirits, grapes and bubbles (coming in around AED 45-75 a glass).

The Venue and Our Verdict on CRAFT By Side Hustle

The venue itself has crafted something that Abu Dhabi has sadly lacked for years: a sophisticated upmarket pub – not a stuffy hotel bar or a smoke-infested hovel that most ‘pubs’ in Abu Dhabi are synonymous with (albeit much improved over the past decade you can breathe in most pubs and sports bars now and get decent grub).

The 250-seat CRAFT venue in Al Maryah is really at the next level on the Abu Dhabi pub and nightlife scene. It draws not just drink enthusiasts but families that love the lively atmosphere of a pub with a non-smoking area available.

From the refurbished wood barrel entry designed by co-founder Jeff Karns to the brickwork interior and stunning wall mural designed by local artist Aleksandra Sova, every attention to detail has been paid to the interior.

The camel-adorned beer taps are a brilliant local touch, as are the glasses (please, please open a small merch shop, guys!)

It undoubtedly deserves a spot on your Abu Dhabi itinerary – not just the novelty of drinking at the region’s first brewery, but we do think you get value for money out of the meals and enjoy the unique flavours of UAE homegrown beer!

Future of Brewing in the UAE

Will this open the floodgates of microbrewing in the UAE? Time will tell.

At this stage, Side Hustle looks to be the only player in the market and doing it well, so it would be a bold move for another competitor to enter the scene. However, we are equally excited to see the expansion of the industry. It could be a huge tourism boom with many purpose-made entertainment venues popping up all over the city.

In both Dubai and Abu Dhabi, there is no longer a need for a bar and restaurant license to be attached to a hospitality venue, which has greatly opened up opportunities for smaller players to offer licenced restaurant venues.

The ability to ferment and sell on-site is currently restricted only to Abu Dhabi, so don’t expect to see a similar opening in Dubai, yet.

This citywide exhibition, curated by Reem Fadda and Alia Zaal Lootah, is a significant component of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi’s Public Art Abu Dhabi initiative. It aims to enhance the urban landscape of Abu Dhabi through public art.

What is Manar Abu Dhabi about?

Manar Abu Dhabi showcases over 20 local, regional, and international artists, including Ayman Zedani, Carsten Höller, Jim Denevan, Latifa Saeed, Luciana Abait, Mohammed Kazem, Nadia Kaabi-Linke, Nujoom Al Ghanem, Rain Wu, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Samia Halaby, Shezad Dawood, teamLab, and others.

The artworks are installed across various locations in the city, including Corniche Road and Beach, the Eastern Mangroves, Fahid Island, Jubail Mangrove Park, Lulu Island, Saadiyat Island, and Al Samaliyah Island.

The inaugural edition of Manar Abu Dhabi is centred around the theme “Grounding Light,” which reflects on the concept of grounding, self-enlightenment, and the idea that light mirrors our inner selves, body, mind, nature, and spirit. The exhibition features a diverse range of artworks:

• Jim Denevan’s “Self Similar” on Fahid Island: A monumental land art piece illuminated by 432 solar lanterns (you may have observed the giant pyramid looking structures off the E10 highway between Yas and Saadiyat Islands)
• Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s “Translation Island” on Lulu Island: An interactive journey through large-scale audiovisual multimedia artworks.
• Carsten Höller’s “Abu Dhabi Dots” on Corniche Beach: An interactive light game sure to be a hit with kids.
• Shilpa Gupta’s artwork presented in Arabic, English, and Urdu, reflecting on human potential for change.
• Jumairy’s “Luciferin Shores” on Lulu Island: Celebrating the ethereal beauty of bioluminescent beaches.
• Luciana Abait’s “Agua”: An immersive experience symbolizing spiritual cleansing.
• Shezad Dawood’s “Coral Alchemy (Acropora Grove)”: Promoting environmental awareness.
• Nujoom Al Ghanem’s celebration of Abu Dhabi’s seafaring heritage on Lulu Island.
• Ahmed Al Areef’s video projection on the Abu Dhabi Chamber Building, showcasing the city’s evolving landscape.

Additionally, the exhibition includes a series of public talks, workshops, and performances.

A second series of artworks will be unveiled on Al Samaliyah Island on December 20, 2023. This series includes teamLab’s immersive digital artworks, Ayman Zedani’s “Terrapolis,” and other works that explore the interaction between humans, nature, and technology.

Yas Island’s newest family hangout, Central, has something for everyone and has quickly catapulted itself to the best family dining spot in Abu Dhabi! Not only does it serve up some amazing grub, but there’s loads to keep the whole family busy, from arcade games to a bowling alley.

As well as grown-up drinks and a nice, long happy hour, they are the soft drink experts, too, with some seriously colourful shakes, lemonades and mocktails on the menu.

The weekend lineup often includes live entertainment, and they are known for their efficient and speedy service if you are catching a show after dinner at Etihad Arean in Yas Bay.

Texas Roadhouse

This American chain restaurant is a family favourite in Yas Mall. There are some great lunchtime deals; even an evening steak won’t set you back an arm and a leg. The general ambience is relaxed and fun and steps up a gear when the staff do a bit of rodeo dancing. Complimentary bread and peanuts keep you going whilst you wait for your starters.

Whilst this is a great family choice, the restaurant is best avoided by peanut allergy sufferers.

Alkalime Healthy Restaurant

A great little spot by Soul Beach in the Al Mamsha Development, Alkalime specialises in healthy, tasty organic food. There’s plenty for vegans and people with lactose and gluten intolerances. The children’s menu is small and comprises almond-crusted chicken nuggets and healthy chicken noodles, but these are two great dishes that seem to go down well with younger guests.

There’s a range of milks on offer, including almond, coconut and soya, to complement a variety of lovingly crafted hot drinks. The cakes and desserts are delicious without being too sweet, and the views across the beach are simply gorgeous.

Family Dining in Downtown Abu Dhabi

Wagamama

British Japanese/Korean-inspired chain restaurant Wagamama tries hard to please families. Its dedicated kids’ menu is designed to get children used to more than nuggets and French fries, and it also provides activity packs and children’s chopsticks.

They are well known for their quick service, meaning that nobody gets whingey while they wait.

Occasionally, Wagamama also runs children’s cookery classes. These must be booked in advance, so don’t forget to check the Wagamama website before you visit.

Wagamamas is also an excellent choice if you’re concerned about food allergies and intolerances; these are clearly marked on their menu, and the staff are well-trained. Gluten-free noodles, for example, are available.

The Cheesecake Factory

A fantastic family dining restaurant with an extensive menu and large portions. This American chain is very popular with residents. Don’t feel bad for sharing dishes at the Cheesecake Factory; they are enormous.

The children’s menu is large and varied if kids would like their own plates. Whatever you do, ensure you have enough room to share at least one slice of the venue’s signature cheesecake. Slurp!

Sanderson’s is located in Al Seef Village Mall and serves all sorts of yummy fayre. There’s a great kids’ menu featuring homemade nuggets and fries, ham and cheese toasties, spaghetti bolognese and good old fish and chips, all priced at a reasonable 35 AED. Some great options for adults include homemade pie of the day, poke bowls, and sea bass with tamarind and chilli.

The really great thing about this boutique cafe is its children’s outdoor play area. It is great for those cooler winter days, and this is the perfect dining spot to head to in Abu Dhabi with toddlers.

Dolci & Capricci

Okay, the downtown branch of this Abu Dhabi family favourite has closed, but under the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in the Souk Al Jami, there is a little-known secret….Whilst it is much smaller than its downtown predecessor, there is a branch of this simply perfecto pizzeria.

Famous for its homemade ice cream and stupendous bombolini, Dolci and Capricci also serve up authentic pizza and pasta dishes. This is a great place for the family to eat after a visit to Abu Dhabi’s most famous building.

A home-grown alternative to Paul, many local residents would tell you that they are the ‘same, same but different’. There are branches across the city and in many residential neighbourhoods, making La Brioche a popular choice for residents.

Thinking Outside the Box – Restaurants in Umm Al Emarat Park

The beautiful Umm Al Emarat Park is a great place for family dining. Whilst the park does not allow you to take in your own picnics, there are loads of great food outlets within the park itself.

In addition to the restaurants by the main entrance, including Farmer’s Bistro and Parker’s, Green for Life by the children’s play Park on the far side of the grassed area is a great place to dine al fresco while the kids play. Various other outlets include a Mövenpick ice-cream chalet and seasonal food trucks.

Umm Al Emarat Park is located in the Mushrif area of the city. You will find the entrance on 15th Street. There’s an AED 10 cover charge per person to enter the park.

Art House Cafe

This is a great little place in Al Bandar with indoor and outdoor seating. It is a fantastic spot for breakfast or lunch and for you and the kids to get creative. Painting a plate while you wait for your food comes with a small fee if you want to take your creation home, or you can leave it at the cafe for others to enjoy.

Dishes include traditional Arabic shakshuka as well as amazing pancake stacks for breakfast, a variety of salads, healthy bowls, wraps, burgers, and sandwiches for lunch, as well as more substantial main courses. Meow Cafe

Attention all cat lovers! If you fancy spending some time with some new feline friends, head to the cat cafe in Al Muneera.

Entry is 45 AED for adults and 35 AED for children for one hour. There is a range of hot and cold drinks, cakes and chocolates on offer but no other food. Still, a great option for little people who simply love cats!
