No trip to Abu Dhabi is complete without a visit to the desert. It is, after all, the UAE’s cultural heartland. In times gone by, Bedouin tribes would traverse the great sand sea looking for places to graze their camels, making temporary camps wherever they went.

Whilst it is still possible to follow in the footsteps of the Bedouin and camp in the desert, there are now many other, far more luxurious options for places to stay in the desert.

These have more than just proper toilets, showers and high-speed Wi-Fi. In fact, you’ll be blown away by the sheer opulence of some of Abu Dhabi’s 5-Star desert hotels and resorts.

Here we take a close look at 3 of the best you’ll want to experience in the Abu Dhabi desert, plus a round up of further desert locations to try for a unique experience in Abu Dhabi and around the emirates.

Anantara Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort

Qasr Al Sarab, or The Palace of the Mirage, as its name translates, sits nestled between the desert dunes of the Liwa Desert, also known as the Empty Quarter – the world’s largest sand desert.

If the desert around here looks familiar that’s because it’s been used as a filming location for many Hollywood movies including the 2021 Blockbuster ‘Dune’. This area of the United Arab Emirates is known as ‘The Empty Quarter’ – or Rub’ al Khali – the world’s largest uninterrupted sand mass.

The cast and crew of ‘Dune’ actually stayed at the Qasr Al Sarab whilst they were filming and why wouldn’t they? It is a simply stunning hotel – on every level. Here tradition meets all mod cons.

As you drive through the gates you are transported to a fairy tale world; but a fairy tale world complete with a luxurious spa and some of the best restaurants in the whole of the UAE.

Accommodation at Qasr Al Sarab

There are a variety of rooms on offer at Anantara’s Qasr Al Sarab, from the 140 comfortable standard rooms to the 52 private villas with their own private pools. Each room is tastefully decorated in sympathy with the local culture and environment.

Dining at Qasr Al Sarab

There are numerous dining options at the Qasr Al Sarab. Breakfast is served in the Al Waha restaurant and is buffet style. A huge variety of breakfast options are available, ranging from local delicacies and South Asian options to a full English breakfast.

Lunch can be taken at the Ghadeer Mediterranean restaurant and poolside bar. The Lobby Lounge, Al Liwan also serves light bites throughout the day. Most of the other restaurants do not open until the evening.

The Suhail Rooftop Lounge and Grill opens at 3 pm for drinks and serves dinner from 6 pm. Book a table early in the evening to enjoy magnificent sunsets.

If, on the other hand, you want to experience Bedouin-style dining and an Arabic barbecue with belly dancing and camels close by, make a reservation at Al Falaj – it isn’t open every day, so be sure to check when booking to avoid disappointment.

If you’re looking for something really special the Qasr Al Sarab can offer you a number of tailored dining experiences. Dine by Design gives you options from the three signature restaurants that can be enjoyed at a private table overlooking the desert (24 hours’ notice must be given).

As the sun sets, torches and a fire pit will be lit, giving way to a romantic evening beneath the stars. If you want an even more secluded venue, a private barbecue can be arranged out amongst the dunes, but this will set you back somewhere in the region of AED 1,500 per person if you’re drinking alcohol.

Of course there is always the option for in-room dining and the Qasr Al Sarab does offer 24 hour room service.

Facilities and Activities at Qasr Al Sarab

There are plenty of opportunities to explore the desert at Qasr Al Sarab. Short and long camel treks are available, as well as desert drives through the dunes and sandboarding.

You can get up close and personal with some desert wildlife on the ‘Animal Experience’ excursion (which is the only activity suitable for children under 4 years old) as well as during the scheduled falconry displays.

If you’d like to stay away from your hotel room and sleep in a Bedouin-style camp, the hotel can accommodate this at the luxurious Camp Nujum; this will set you back 2000 AED per person.

The hotel is set in oasis-like gardens and has its own tennis courts, gym and other sports facilities. In addition to the private villa pools, there is a large communal pool with a splash pad for children. Children even get their own mini sun beds.

If your little ones aren’t content sitting by the pool or you need to keep them busy whilst out on an excursion, there is a very well-equipped kids club and enclosed playground, which is available for an extra fee.

For anyone seeking some real pampering, the Qasr Al Sarab has beautiful Anantara Spa and Hammam facilities, and you can end your day with sundowners at the swim-up bar.

A stay at the Qasr Al Sarab doesn’t come cheap, but it is a once-in-a-lifetime sort of experience, the undisputed champion of UAE desert experiences.

The Arabian Nights Village

The Arabian Nights Village offers a comfortable and unpretentious stay whilst giving you most of the benefits of other desert resorts at a fraction of the price.

You can make your own way out to the desert or be picked up in Abu Dhabi and driven there in an air-conditioned 4×4. We do have to say that driving out there isn’t for the faint-hearted. The road is dubious in places and you do run the risk of bumping into a few camels… It is, however, doable and all part of the adventure!

Sitting only about 1 hour from the city, Arabian Nights Village attracts evening-only visitors on desert safari experiences, as well as overnight guests.

Accommodation at Arabian Nights Village

Rooms or “bayts” at Arabian Nights Village are individual chalets. There are three different sorts of room available.

You can stay in a one-bedroomed masonry bungalow or a two-bedroomed wooden chalet, or metal framed Bedouin style tent-like building. The rooms are decorated beautifully and give you a real sense of desert living. Larger groups can also stay in the large towers that mark the entrance to the hotel compound. 

Dining at Arabian Nights Village

Dinner is buffet style and served Al Fresco around a central stage. An Oud Player and Belly Dancers provide entertainment while you tuck into all sorts of middle eastern and South Asian fayre. Once dinner is over, you can while away the hours chatting around the campfires and gazing at the stars.

Breakfast is also served in the morning for overnight guests in the restaurant.

Activities and Facilities at Arabian Nights Village

There is a beautiful pool area and bar, as well as space to play games within the walls of the hotel. Large dunes make for the perfect sandboarding opportunity, and the hotel makes sandboards available free of charge.

You can take a short camel ride as part of your package or pay extra and go on a magical dawn camel trek. Dune bashing and quad bikes are also available for an extra fee. Don’t miss the chance to get an authentic henna tattoo.

The Arabian Nights Village offers excellent value for money and includes a number of activities, dinner and breakfast within the room price. Standard Rooms start from 990 AED per couple to over 3000 AED per night for the Tower Suite, accommodating up to 6 guests.

Al Wathba, A Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa

Formerly operated by the Jumeirah Group, the Al Wathba Desert Resort is a beautifully designed desert retreat less than an hour’s drive from the centre of Abu Dhabi.

The desert here isn’t as picture book worthy as the desert at Liwa or around the Arabian Nights Village, in that there are no huge sand dunes to slide down, but there are fossil dunes close by, and the somewhat flatter terrain makes for great horse/camel riding, both of which are available to guests staying at this luxury Abu Dhabi desert resort.

Accommodation at Al Wathba Desert Resort

There are 90 deluxe and superior rooms as well as 13 one, two and three-bedroom villas with their own private pools. The Resort is modelled on a traditional Arabian village and contains a lot of traditional features.

Dining at Al Wathba Desert Resort

The Al Wathba Desert Resort offers a variety of culinary experiences, from Afternoon Tea at the Al Mesayan rooftop bar, to dinner at the amazing Italian trattoria Terra Secca. If you’re visiting or staying on a Friday, why not try the sumptuous Desert Rose Brunch at the Bedouin style Bait Al Hanine restaurant?

Facilities and Activities at Al Wathba Desert Resort

The Al Wathba Desert Resort has a beautiful pool area with a nice pool bar. There is also a beautiful luxury spa offering a variety of relaxing and indulgent treatments. The hotel offers a variety of desert experiences, including camel riding, horse riding, falconry displays, and dune bashing a slight distance away from the resort.

The hotel is also located close to the Al Wathba Camel Race track (you have to get up very early to see any races – they’re usually over by 8 am) and the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, home to a large number of flamingoes and over 200 other species of bird.

Rooms start at around 850 AED per night, excluding taxes in high season.

More Desert Resorts in Abu Dhabi

Other desert resorts that you may like to visit in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi include the Telal Resort in Al Ain and the Aldhafra Resort, Vignette Collection (formerly the Tilal Liwa Hotel) in Liwa.

Both offer beautiful accommodations and a variety of desert activities. Tilal Liwa offers a great value option for those on a budget but still wanting the desert resort experience.

Another very new option we’re going to throw in here that sits on the cusp between glamping and luxury desert resort is Bab al Nojoum Bateen Liwa. This property sits deep in the Liwa desert and offers a series of standalone villas, each with a private plunge pool, kitchen, and outdoor living space overlooking the vast dunes of the Empty Quarter.

No extensive resort facilities, though, to the extent of the other desert resorts in Abu Dhabi that we listed above. However, Liwa Village offers dining options, along with an additional pool and fitness facilities for guests.

Western Region – Sir Bani Yas

Another popular choice for unique UAE experiences is Anantara Desert Islands Resort & Spa. Situated on Sir Bani Yas Island, approximately 2 hours west of the city, stay in a nature reserve and enjoy the best of both desert and sea in the Persian Gulf.

Other unique experiences in Abu Dhabi (that aren’t camping)

Whilst it is not strictly a desert hotel, the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet in Al Ain, sits just beneath the summit of Abu Dhabi’s tallest mountain and offers views down to the Al Ain Oasis and across the border into Oman.

The hotel could do with a bit of TLC, but the rooms are comfortable, and there is a nice pool area with slides. There is also a lovely children’s play area and splash pad. Dining is not 5-star but the Eden Rock poolside restaurant serves up a decent burger.

The Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet offers the perfect base to discover the Jebel Hafeet National Park, the World Heritage Site of Al Ain Oasis, and the wider city of Al Ain.

Visiting Emirates Palace

Completed in 2005 and estimated to have cost 3 billion USD, the Emirates Palace is one of the most expensive buildings ever built. However, it is not the residence of one of Abu Dhabi’s wealthy sheikhs but a luxury hotel.

Located on a 1.3 km stretch of private beach, the 84-hectare site contains 394 rooms and suites, no fewer than 9 bars and restaurants, more than 200 fountains, a theatre rivalling those of London’s West End, and a 2,500-person capacity ballroom. It also houses an award-winning spa featuring a traditional hammam, two jacuzzis, two steam rooms, and an ice cave.

The interior decor blends natural stone, antique gold, and mother of pearl juxtaposed with rich velvet and brocade fabrics, providing a sense of opulence seen in few other places.

Outside, the gardens are a veritable paradise, with thoughtfully planted areas surrounding a well-designed pool featuring water slides, a waterfall, and a lazy river.

The hotel is currently managed by premium hotel chain Mandarin Oriental, but it was initially run by luxury giant Kempinski.

How to visit Emirates Palace

The easiest way to visit is to book in one of the hotel’s restaurants. This could be for anything from a gold-dusted coffee in the lobby to a full-on candlelit dinner at one of the hotel’s fine dining restaurants.

The hotel has 9 (year-round) bars and restaurants, including several with Michelin Stars. Here’s a breakdown of what’s on offer:

• Broadway Brasserie & Bar – Elevated comfort food and curated cocktails
• Talea by Antonio Guida – A Michelin-star restaurant serving authentic Italian cuisine
• Hakkasan – A renowned Cantonese restaurant with one Michelin-star – offering some of the best Abu Dhabi night time dining views
• Martabaan by Hemant Oberoi – Contemporary Indian
• The Lebanese Terrace – A menu inspired by Lebanon’s coastal cuisine
• ALMA – Soulful Mexican cuisine
• Cascades – Poolside favourites and healthy snacks

• Episodes – The revamped cafe area features various boutique stalls offering the finest selection of viennoiserie, deli sandwiches and gelato

Note that a respectable dress standard is expected within the Palace grounds and buildings. Ladies should cover their shoulders and knees, and men should wear long trousers when not at the beach or pool area.

There are also seasonal offerings at Emirates Palace:

• Cafe Fountain – A sunset hot spot by the front of the palace
• Various Iftar and Suhoor offerings during Ramadan

You could also book a Palace Day Pass, which gives you access to the pool and private beach facilities or arrange a treatment at the hotel’s magnificent spa. You could also sign up for a scuba diving course at the hotel’s scuba diving centre.

The Presidential Palace – Qasr Al Watan

In contrast, Qasr al Watan is “the actual Palace”. Rather than a stately historic home of the president and his family, it is, in fact, the working office and house of government for the UAE.

Sitting on vast grounds occupying 380,000 acres at the tip of Abu Dhabi island, Qasr al Watan literally means ‘Palace of the Nation’. It was opened to the public in 2019.

The vast site contains the offices of the President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as well as the Vice-President of the United Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed.

The main palace building is home to the UAE legislature and is, for the most part, open to the public.

Qasr Al Watan allows visitors to explore the UAE’s history and traditions further while they journey through a vast collection of cultural artefacts, art and rare manuscripts. Visitors will also be able to understand the Palace’s architecture and design, which incorporates the essence of the spirit of the United Arab Emirates.

We recommend buying a ticket in advance to visit Qasr Al Watan. Whilst it is possible to buy tickets on the door, capacity is limited, and you run the risk of turning up when the palace is closed on state business.

You can also take a guided tour rather than going it alone. If you’re happy to keep up with a group, this will ensure that you get the most out of your visit, as the guides are very knowledgeable and able to answer any questions that you might have.

Another option is to visit the palace as part of a tour package. If you are visiting as part of a delegation or tour group from Dubai, your ticket is likely to have already covered your entry and tour of the palace. Read the fine print of your ticket to see if this is included or if you need to add on a guided tour.

Qasr Al Hosn

Another palace open to the public in Abu Dhabi city is Qasr Al Hosn. This fortified historic home of the ruling Al Nahyan family was one of the first buildings in Abu Dhabi. It is now an interactive and engaging museum that gives a broad insight into the city’s history and culture.

Sheikh Zayed Palace

The Sheikh Zayed Palace (also known as Al Ain Palace Museum) is located in Al Ain, over 150km from Abu Dhabi.

Constructed on the western side of the verdant Al Ain Oasis, the palace was home to the country’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed until 1966. It was converted into a museum in 1998 and now gives visitors an insight into royal life in the first half of the 20th Century.

In stark contrast to the modern Presidential Palace, it’s a fascinating stop for those wanting to learn more about the country’s humble beginnings and the Al Nahyan family.

Abu Dhabi has a superb selection of hotels with their own private beach access. Most are calm, shallow-water beaches, whilst those on Saadiyat Island experience gentle waves and uninterrupted views of the Gulf.

Here, we’ll guide you through all of the areas of Abu Dhabi boasting beach frontage and what you can expect in terms of hotels – luxury and value options for visitors to Abu Dhabi.

Saadiyat Island Beach Resorts in Abu Dhabi

We’ll start with the string of luxury resorts that line the coast of Saadiyat Island. The hotels along Saadiyat Beach enjoy the natural soft, white sand and crashing waves from the Persian (Arabian) Gulf.

• The St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort
• Rixos Premium Saadiyat Island (Ultra All-inclusive)
• Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas
• Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel & Villas
• Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort

These resorts are luxury offerings, equally perfect for family beach vacations in Abu Dhabi or luxury romantic couple escapes. They all have family-friendly facilities such as kids’ clubs as well as private villa options, some with their own private pool.

They don’t come cheap, but package deals can be available, especially if visiting mid-week (Monday to Thursday), making them sensational value for the setting and service you get.

Abu Dhabi Beach Hotels Along The Corniche

Many hotels could be classified as sitting on the Abu Dhabi Corniche, though as a large road separates most from the beach itself, only one hotel at the East end of the Corniche actually has its own beach frontage. This is the Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel and Resort, with a small lagoon-style beachfront and pool. It’s a little dated but a great value city option.

There are many more hotel beach options at the western end of the Corniche and the area known as Al Ras al Akhdar, which has its own beach or beach club.

• Emirates Palace

Emirates Palace remains one of the city’s flagship hotels with its absolutely pristine 1.3km long beachfrontage; the others on this list all include excellent facilities for both hotel guests and daycation use.

If you are staying at a hotel in Abu Dhabi without its own beach, you may be able to pick up a sensational package to one of these beach clubs for day use only so you don’t miss out on the Abu Dhabi beach experience.

Abu Dhabi Hotels on the Beach in Al Zahiyah (Tourist Club Area)

Although officially renamed Al Zahiyah in 2014, most still refer to this little pocket of the city, facing towards Al Maryah Island, as Tourist Club Area (adjacent to Abu Dhabi Mall). Once the heart of the city’s entertainment zone in the 1970s and 80s, now just two popular family resort hotels remain on the waterfront:

• Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi
• Le Meridien Abu Dhabi

Although views from the beaches have become somewhat tainted over the past decade with construction, the area has become settled again with calm waterfront views, and the hideous powerlines have been removed!

Both hotels can offer sensational daycations and overnight packages and have a lively nightlife scene with many attached pubs and restaurants.

Beach Rotana also has residences that are great for larger families and those looking at longer stays in the Capital in serviced apartments.

Beach Hotels on Abu Dhabi’s Grand Canal (Khor al Maqta)

There are several hotels along the Grand Canal, the waterway that separates Abu Dhabi island from the mainland, that enjoy their own beach front. These are:

• Fairmont Bab al Bahr
• Traders Hotel Qaryat Al Beri
• Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri
• The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi Grand Canal

The Ritz Carlton sits immediately adjacent to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, whilst the other three sit on the opposite bank (the name Bab al Bahr “Between the Bridges” referring to Al Maqta Bridge and Mussafah Bridge, two of the three main thoroughfares into Abu Dhabi Island.

Each commands spectacular mosque views, particularly at sunset. The waters here are calm, and a traditional dhow service operates between the hotels. This is a great location for those wanting to be close to both the city of Abu Dhabi and off-island options, including the Yas Island theme parks, AUH airport, and easy access to Dubai.

We’re not going to lie though; these are imported sand beaches for the most part and are simply not as nice as the soft white sand you’ll find on Saadiyat.

Abu Dhabi Beach Hotels on Yas Island

Although there are no Yas Island beach resorts, all of the hotels on Yas have access to Yas Beach via a shared shuttle service. This private beach is free for hotel guests or sunbeds can be rented to daycationers at Yas Beach Club.

• W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island
• Yas Island Rotana

This is a good option for those on short stopovers who want to catch a bit of the city’s theme park action as well as catch a little bit of sun.

The Yas Island hotels are significantly cheaper than the resort-style offerings on Saadiyat Island. Though granted, not as luxurious, they are practical and convenient – you are less than 10 minutes from Zayed International Airport (AUH).

Beach Hotels Elsewhere in Abu Dhabi

Beyond these clusters of hotels, there are other locations just outside the city centre and further around the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, offering guests a private beach with their hotel stay.

• Al Raha Beach Hotel – off the E10 Highway, close to the new airport on the way to Dubai
• Zaya Nurai Island Resort – exclusive luxury island experience just 10 mins off the Saadiyat Island coast
• Al Maya Island & Resort – accessed by boat, adjacent to the Presidential Palace, there are 1, 2, and 3 bedroom villas to rent

Also, consider the glamping site and new luxury villas on Hudayriyat Island. Only moments away from the city, Bab al Nojoum Hudayriyat offers tents to beachfront chalets with their own pool, as well as more luxurious ocean view and overwater villas.

1. The Doubletree by Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island Residences

Hotel Location in Abu Dhabi: Immediately adjacent to the Yas Island theme parks WB World and Yas Waterworld; 1, 2 and 3 Bedroom apartments, some with extensive terraces, located within easy reach of the airport.

Why we like it: This is a new property with modern, stylish suites. The rooms in the apart-hotel section of the property include fully equipped kitchenettes, complete with an espresso machine, washing machine and tumble dryer.

Facilities include a fully equipped fitness centre and children’s playground. The swimming pool is closed for renovation until the 31st August 2024, but the pools at the neighbouring WB Hotel (also operated by Hilton), and the Hilton Yas Island with its Cafe Del Mar Beach Club are available for guests at no extra cost. Access to the private Yas Beach is also included.

The Doubletree is within walking distance of Yas Waterworld, Warner Brothers World Abu Dhabi and Yas Mall in the cooler months. There’s also a free shuttle bus available. Whilst there is no convenience store on site, there is a large supermarket (Carrefour) in Yas Mall.

Breakfast is available for a fee and is provided in the WB hotel next door. There are a few dining options available on-site. You’ll find a range of dining options in Yas Mall, including family favourites like Shake Shack, The Rainforest Cafe and The Cheesecake Factory, as well as more grown-up joints like Asha’s (Indian cuisine) and the Texas De Brazil Steakhouse.

2. Marriott Executive Apartments Downtown Abu Dhabi

Hotel Location in Abu Dhabi:  1, 2 and 3 Bedroom apartments close to Al Wadha Mall and in the heart of the city action.

Why we like it: These apartments offer a home-away-from-home feel with all the amenities you could possibly need on hand and large rooms great for family living. 

They come with fully equipped kitchens, including a washer and tumble dryer and access to all the hotel pool & gym amenities. Breakfast is not included, but you can access the Marriott hotel restaurant and many nearby options.

Marriott is at the pricier end of the scale, but everything is included, parking and internet are available free and 24-hour front desk. This is an excellent Abu Dhabi apartment hotel choice for business travellers.

4. Beach Rotana Residences

Hotel Location in Abu Dhabi:  In what used to be described as the Tourist Club area (now al Zahayih), you are above the Abu Dhabi Mall with a small beach frontage, attached to the Beach Rotana

Why we like it: If you need access to amenities while staying longer term in the city, then this is an excellent choice.  1, 2, and 3-bedroom apartments have everything you can think of, including a dishwasher and washing machine.

Take advantage of the shared resort facilities, including private beach, kids’ club, playground, aqua play area, pool, gym, and sauna.  You are right on top of the mall, so there is easy access to the co-op supermarket and other shops, as well as a few dozen restaurants and bars on your doorstep.

Some rooms also have beautiful waterfront views over to Al Maryah Island. This is the best to mix fun & living and an excellent aparthotel in Abu Dhabi for families.

5. Al Seef Resort & Spa by Andalus

Hotel Location in Abu Dhabi:  Studio, 1, 2 & 3 bedroom options situated next to Al Seef Mall, Khalifa Park / Ministries area (first exit off the freeway once you are “on island”).

Why we like it: Located right by Al Seef Mall, the modern and stylish Al Seef resort will have you thinking you’re in the heart of the med, when you’re actually in the centre of Abu Dhabi.

The mall is not one of the biggest in the capital but includes a Carrefour Supermarket and all the little everyday essentials that you need. There’s also a children’s play centre, a fast food court, and an outdoor ‘village’ area filled with many great places to eat. These include a pretty authentic Irish fish and chip shop (The Chippy), Sandersons and the much-loved Nolu’s healthy lifestyle restaurant.

The rooms are top-notch and have kitchen facilities and a washing machine (but no dryer).

For the kids, there’s a playground, kids room, outdoor pool & spa.  Maybe not with glamorous waterside views like some, but a very spacious and well-equipped living space at quite a reasonable price tag.

6. Bab Al Qasr Residence

Hotel Location in Abu Dhabi:  Sitting on Corniche West, this is one of the newer parts of town, opposite Emirates Palace.  It’s recognisable by its shiny bronze exterior!

Why we like it: A range of studio, 1, 2 & 3 bedroom apartments with full kitchen & washer (no tumble dryer). Breakfast is also included, as well as full beach, pool and gym facilities. 

There is a Waitrose supermarket in neighbouring Etihad Towers, or you can take a short taxi ride to Marina Mall, where you will find a range of international shops, dining options, and a large Carrefour supermarket.

7. Staybridge Suites Yas Island

Hotel Location in Abu Dhabi:  Part of the hotel complex on Yas Island, ideal for those based off-island or wanting to be handy to the Airport and Dubai side of town.

Why we like it: It’s nothing overly fancy but delivers in terms of family living. The self-catering facilities make it easy for you to have breakfast in your room, or you can join the hotel buffet breakfast.

You get access to the pool at the Crown Plaza and the onsite lane pool, and free access to Yas Beach is included in your stay. They’re also a free shuttle bus to Yas Mall and the theme parks on Yas Island.

There are restaurants on-site and around the Yas Hotel Plaza, and the Yas Bay development is within comfortable walking distance during the cooler months. A small convenience store in the Mayan development is next door, and a reasonably sized Waitrose at Al Zeina (through the tunnel). Otherwise, the biggest supermarket close by is the Carrefour at Yas Mall.

The friendly and welcoming people and high standards of safety make travelling to Abu Dhabi hassle-free. Most hotels have specially designated children’s facilities, and the local ethos really does put children first.

The fact that you can find almost anything that you need from your home country, including your favourite toddler snacks or restaurant chains, all adds to Abu Dhabi’s claim to be one of the most family-friendly destinations in the world.

1. The WB Abu Dhabi, Curio Collection by Hilton

Located adjacent to Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi, The WB is the only Warner Brothers-themed hotel in the World. Here, you can have breakfast with Daffy Duck, take afternoon tea with Batman or get room service delivered by Bugs Bunny, the perfect place for young children.

The rooms are stylish and well-appointed, with a splattering of Warner Brothers-themed decor. There are a variety of room types available, including connecting rooms and suites.

The bright and cheerful Side-Kicks restaurant is the perfect place for a family breakfast, lunch or dinner (and also one of the best places for family brunch in Abu Dhabi). The food here is of a high standard and includes all of the kids’ favourites, along with a range of more sophisticated meal choices for adults.

The Matinee pool doubles as a ‘dive-in’ theatre where cartoons are shown throughout the day. There is another pool, the overlook pool, but this is just for adults and includes a swish cocktail bar!

The kids club is sure to keep little ones busy if mum and dad need some grown-up time. Offering a safe and cheerful space, the kids club provides indoor and outdoor activities and includes a playground and splash pad.

Guests receive complimentary access to Warner Brothers World and Yas Waterworld, which are within comfortable walking distance and Ferrari World and Sea World Abu Dhabi (still within walking distance but only during the cooler parts of the year).

You can also enjoy free access to Yas Beach Club if you want to relax on the waterside away from the theme parks, accessible by the Yas free shuttle bus.

2. Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island

A lovely new hotel at the heart of Yas Bay, Yas Island, the Hilton Abu Dhabi, is the perfect base for a family on a longer trip to Abu Dhabi.

The rooms are large, well appointed and well equipped and include interconnecting rooms as well as suites. In the morning, the buffet restaurant serves a hearty international breakfast with many great choices for the kids.

The huge pool has a large shallow section, which is great for children and includes fountains for playful splashing. There’s also a dedicated kids’ pool and water play zone adjacent to the well-equipped kids’ club and playground.

Located within easy reach of Yas Mall, Ferrari World and the other Yas Island theme parks, a stay at the Hilton Yas Bay really allows you to make the most of your time in Abu Dhabi.

It is also conveniently located within walking distance of Yas Bay’s seafront promenade and restaurants, meaning that you are not chained to eating in the hotel restaurant every night without needing to take a taxi.

Hilton is also super close to the Etihad Arena if you want to catch a show and also within walking distance of a number of small playgrounds and a skate park.

Whilst children are not allowed access to the resort’s Cafe Del Mar beach club, complimentary passes to the family-friendly Yas Beach are provided.

Complimentary tickets to Yas Waterworld, Ferrari World, Warner Brothers’ World or Seaworld (limited to one theme park per day) are also included in the price of your stay.

3. Rixos Premium Saadiyat Resort

Fancy a 5* all-inclusive on the best beach in Abu Dhabi? Then, the Rixos Premium Premium Resort is the place for you. Considered the ultimate family-friendly resort by many, this hotel has everything you need to keep the kids happy.

The resort features many pools, including a large family pool, a wave pool and a children’s waterpark. There are also swim-up rooms available and villas with their own private pools. Kids can also enjoy the Rixy Kids Club, which provides scheduled indoor activities as well as lots of outdoor fun.

Located on the beautiful Saadiyat Beach, the hotel offers water sports as well as the chance for kids to splash in the sea and play on the sand. There’s a beach bar service to the hotel’s sunbeds, so there’s no need to traipse back to the main hotel building when you get peckish.

There are 10 restaurants on-site, including Italian L’Olivo and the Turkish-inspired Orient. The latter is especially highly regarded.

The beach bar and pool bars serve up tasty snacks and delicious cocktails for the grown-ups… And because the Rixos is all-inclusive, the kids can eat all the ice cream that they want without the worry of wracking up an unexpected bill!

4. Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas

Whilst all of the Abu Dhabi family resorts on Saadiyat are family-friendly, the chilled-out, family-friendly feel makes the Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas a stand out.

Rooms are comfortable but not fussy and provide clean accommodation perfect for a family with younger kids. There are a variety of suite options available, as well as the chance to book connecting rooms.

The well-designed Aladdin’s Cave Kids Club offers a great place for kids aged 4 to 12 to hang out. There are gaming, activity and cinema zones as well as an outdoor play area with a splash zone and lazy river.

From arts and crafts to mini golf, your little ones are sure to be kept busy – giving you a bit of time to chill out by the pool or head for a spa treatment.

As well as the pool and splash zone in the kids’ club, the huge outdoor swimming pool is great for children of all ages. It’s large with no blind spots, so it’s easy to keep your eyes on the kids at all times. There are, of course, lifeguards on duty, which gives you that extra bit of security.

In terms of eating, Italian restaurant Si is great for your little pizza and pasta lovers, and the breakfast restaurant Sim Sim serves up an international buffet that would please even the fussiest of eaters.

Teens will love Hamilton’s P – one of the city’s best sports bars and gastropubs – with its meter-long hot dogs, juicy burgers and the chance to watch their favourite sports teams.

The Rotana resort comes in a little cheaper than the other Saadiyat Island resorts, which is another reason for its inclusion on our list of best family hotels in Abu Dhabi.

5. Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental

This may be a pricey option, but this is a place where lifelong memories are made.

At Emirates Palace, children are made to feel really special. As well as being treated like royalty, kids receive toiletry packs, complimentary slippers, and personal activity packs when visiting the resort’s restaurants.

Restaurants include Michelin-starred Italian restaurant Talea, contemporary Indian restaurant Martabaan, the renowned Chinese restaurant Hakassan and the more down-to-earth Vendome, which is where the buffet-style breakfast is served. There’s also BBQ Al Qasr for a truly memorable al fresco dining experience.

Accommodation is second to none, and your private butler takes care of all your needs. The rooms are plush and well-maintained, and the standard of cleanliness is impeccable. Connecting rooms are available, as well as family-sized suites.

There are extensive gardens, a play area, and a fantastic complimentary kids club. Open daily from 10.00 am until 6.00 pm; the kids club is available for children over the age of 5.

There’s a full timetable of events with the opportunity to play party games and video games, as well as the chance to play a variety of sports. Children under 5 may attend but must be accompanied by an adult.

Your little prince or princess will love the pool area with its lazy river, several water slides, and building sandcastles on the resort’s pristine coral sand beach. For older children, the Emirates Palace has its own inflatable AquaFun Park and various water sports on its own private beach.

There’s also the chance to take camel rides by the sea, something that your little one will treasure forever!

Pricey but absolutely a once-in-a-lifetime experience in Abu Dhabi

6. Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan by Rotana

A slightly more affordable option in the heart of the city, the Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan is one of our top picks for a place to stay in Abu Dhabi with kids. It is in a prime location close to Etihad Towers with its observation deck and the Presidential Palace.

It is a ‘dry’ hotel, meaning that no alcohol is served, which makes it very popular with families from other Gulf countries. This, combined with the beautiful pool area, pristine beach frontage and awesome kids’ club, make the Khalidiya Palace an extremely family-friendly place to stay.

The kids’ club is open from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. and is for children aged between 4 and 12 years old. It includes a soft play area as well as offering supervised craft activities, games and competitions.

The hotel has friendly staff and offers wonderful afternoon tea. There are also great views over to Abu Dhabi Corniche at the Etihad Towers, one of the city’s premier attractions next door.

7. The Ritz Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal

The stunning Ritz-Carlton Hotel in the prime location of Al Maqta, adjacent to the Grand Mosque, is as great for kids as it is for adults. The beautiful marble hallways and chandeliers are awe-inspiring, and the award-winning restaurants are out of this world.

The beautiful Giornotte restaurant is where you will find your buffet breakfast; it’s also the home of the Saturday brunch and the incredible all-you-can-eat pizza and pasta night. Eat outside under the canopy of fairy lights for a truly memorable experience!

Other great places to eat include The Forge steakhouse, Li Jiang with its Asian menu, and the Middle Eastern-inspired Mijana. For a more casual dining experience, there’s the Al Fresco pool and beach restaurant, as well as Dolce for tasty, healthy options.

There’s also the Venetian Village just a stone’s throw away which includes Indian and Japanese dining options, perfect for a date night for mum and dad, especially as the hotel has its own babysitting service!

The large open gardens and pool are great for families because there are no blind spots, meaning that you’ll unlikely lose your kids if they go off to play. There is a beach with access to the canal for swimming. The water is safe, but the sand can feel slightly fluffy due to the lack of tides.

There is also a kids’ club catering to children aged 4 to 12, open from 10.00 am until 6.00 pm. The resort has its own football pitch (you frequently see visiting football teams training here) and padel courts, as well as lots of green spaces to run around.

Another Ritz-Carlton bonus is the outstanding views of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. You can find such stunning views of this amazingly beautiful building in no other hotel.

8. The St. Regis Abu Dhabi

Situated in the middle of the action on Abu Dhabi’s Corniche, the St. Regis Abu Dhabi is one of our favourite luxury hotels in Abu Dhabi. High-quality service and attention to detail are really important at the St. Regis, which extends to the hotel’s younger guests.

Rooms are of an exceptionally high standard, and the concierge service (not to mention your individual room bulter), goes to every effort to ensure your comfort. The hotel seems like something out of a fairy tale with its impressive staircase and grand chandeliers.

The hotel’s fantastic Nation Riviera Beach Club is fantastic for families and includes a private 200-meter stretch of the sheltered Corniche beach. There’s also a stunning family pool and whirlpool. In addition to the beach club pool, there is also a rooftop pool on the third-floor terrace, near the Azura Lounge.

The Treasure Island Kids’ Club is open daily from 9.00 am until 6.00 pm for children aged 4 to 12 years old. The pirate ship-themed play area includes a water play section with a small slide. The well-trained staff provide lots of fun and engaging activities, allowing mum and dad an hour or two of peace and quiet. The only downside is that it’s located across the road from the main hotel in the Nation Riviera Beach Club (access is via an underpass).

When it’s time for dinner, there’s no shortage of wonderful restaurants, from Catch Seafood Restaurant and Cabana grill located in the beach club, to Villa Toscana Italian restaurant and the Azura Panoramic Lounge with its tapas, grills and incredible views.

Connected to the hotel is a small shopping mall featuring several coffee shops, restaurants, boutique-style stores, and a cinema.

9. Al Raha Beach Hotel

Amongst the most long-standing family-friendly hotels that are also friendly on the pocket is the Al Raha Beach Hotel. It’s not too expensive, has great kids’ facilities and is conveniently located not too far from Abu Dhabi Airport and not too far from the action.

Situated in the quiet residential area of Al Raha Beach, a taxi will get you to the Corniche in 20 minutes. Equally, a quick 10-minute hop will get you to Yas Island and all of its theme parks and amenities. It’s also a great base if you fancy making a day trip to Dubai.

The 278 well-appointed rooms, suites and villas sit on their own 900m stretch of beach. The hotel has a lovely pool and dedicated water play areas for kids. There’s also a kids club for children aged 3 to 12 from 10.00 am until 7.00 pm as well as a babysitter on call outside of these times.

Connected to the hotel is Al Raha Mall. It’s not the fanciest mall in Abu Dhabi, but it does contain a lovely cake shop and several fast food outlets. There’s also a cinema and the beautiful Orange Wheels Play Centre, which is great for younger children.

This is a truly overlooked hidden gem if you’re seeking out an affordable family resort in Abu Dhabi.

10. Anantara Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort

Enter the world of Arabian nights at Qasr Al Sarab and experience the desert in 5-star luxury!

Children are well catered for at this mirage-like desert resort with a large communal pool and splash pad as playgrounds and a kids club, as well as a separate teen club. There’s no shortage of personal touches intended to make your stay truly special, and if you happen to be celebrating a birthday or other occasion, Qasr Al Sarab really does go the extra mile.

Whilst the hotel is gorgeous, the main attraction is the stunning desert landscape and the chance to get up close and personal with its inhabitants. Enjoy camel riding, horse riding and falconry and find out about the desert’s smaller inhabitants from the resort’s knowledgeable guides.

At the end of the day, enjoy dinner in the resort’s mock-up of a traditional Bedouin camp or have a private picnic in the dunes whilst gazing at the stars. You’re sure to make lifelong memories for you and your kids at this stunningly beautiful desert resort.

The only downside to this incredible resort is the distance from the city; you will need to arrange a hire car and drive or a transfer service with the hotel. It’s about 2 hours from Abu Dhabi city, deep in the Liwa Desert.

Abu Dhabi’s undisputed beach resort champion is Saadiyat Island, sitting just to the north of the city centre and easily connected by freeway to Abu Dhabi’s International Airport and Dubai.

Not nearly as over the top as The Palm Jumeirah in neighbouring Dubai, Saadiyat Island has a growing reputation as one of the country’s most beautiful and exclusive beach resort zones; it’s hard to believe you are still in the heart of a major city.

What sets the resorts on Saadiyat Island aside from many of their competing resorts in Dubai and the Northern Emirates is their unbridled access to the Persian (Arabian) Gulf waters – with real sand and real waves! But let’s look at each and see what additional facilities are available beyond the beach.

The St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort

Nearest to Saadiyat’s Culture district but bordered by an empty strip of beach, you get an incredible feeling of exclusion here, yet you are still only a stone’s throw from the action.

The main hotel has a distinct Mediterranean style with Arabian touches and a huge airy lobby with beautiful Gulf views. Rooms are generously sized, starting from 55sqm (and don’t forget your very own personal butler).

Families love it for the exceptional Sandcastles Kids Club, offering an extensive range of activities and dedicated play spaces.  There are five swimming pools spread over the resort, including a dedicated lap pool and kids splash zone.

There are six bars and restaurants covering south-east Asian to Mediterranean cuisine, all of which serve up mouth-watering cuisine and include a variety of kids’ options. The breakfast served in the Olea restaurant is of an exceptionally high standard and the service is truly second to none.

The St. Regis offers both a luxurious escape for families and for couples. It’s the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion, or treat yourself! We’d argue it’s the best all-rounder on Saadiyat Island and gets our top billing in 2023.

Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas

One of the newest openings, Saadiyat Rotana, is proving a popular family choice with a great range of family-sized rooms as well as access to Aladdin’s Cave, the kids club, which has a lazy river, splash pool, cinema zone, water slide and entertainment for your younger kids.

Housing 327 rooms as well as 13 beach villas, the resort is huge but well spread out over Saadiyat Beach.  There are seven different options for dining, from Italian to Gastropub, as well as a rooftop bar for catching those sunset views.

For parents and couples, there’s the outstanding Zen Spa to enjoy, with 10 treatment rooms and a Hamman, as well as Bodylines gym, tennis courts and a mini-golf course.

This is our favourite Saadiyat hotel for a fun family getaway. The large family pool and variety of child-friendly dining options make the Saadiyat Rotana a real winner. It’s not overcrowded and has a chilled-out and relaxed atmosphere.

Rixos Premium Saadiyat Island

This palatial hotel is draped in opulence with a grand foyer, and many touches true to the brand’s Turkish roots, making it one of the UAE’s ultimate luxury resorts.

What sets Rixos Premium apart from others is that they offer all-inclusive and ultra-all-inclusive packages.  This suits some to a tee, whilst others might find this a little overwhelming, especially at weekends when staycationers also join the crowds.

The crowds are well spread out though among the dozen bars and restaurants on-site. There are also tennis courts, a gym, Anjana Spa and wellness club and an extensive program of sports and activities to keep you busy too. Live performances and DJ’s supplement the entertainment offering.

Kids can access the Rixy Kids Club – supervised for 4 to 12-year-olds (babysitting can be additionally requested). One of the highlights of the resort is the mini aqua park and wave pool, making it one of Abu Dhabi’s best for families.

Room rates per night might appear a little more pricey than others but this is more than made up for in the meals and drinks. You’ll find Rixos is the best value offering on Saadiyat Island.

Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas

The Park Hyatt was one of Saadiyat’s first openings and has become known for its ultra-relaxing getaway from the city. You are nestled between the Saadiyat Beach Golf Club and the Saadiyat Public Beach.

One of the smaller hotels, it has a more intimate feel, perhaps than the others, but nonetheless it’s on a grand scale like only Abu Dhabi does, with the most spectacular landscaped gardens and a multitude of beautiful pools!

There are two bars and three restaurants, including The Beach House restaurant, which has one of Abu Dhabi’s best ocean views as well as delicious Mediterranean-inspired food.

It doesn’t have as many family-friendly offerings as those around it (it does have a kids club and playground), making it our top choice if you are looking for a quiet couples retreat! We particularly love Atarmia Spa.

Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort

The most recent opening on Saadiyat and also the most isolated, it occupies its own stretch of silky white sand adjacent to Saadiyat Beach Club at the eastern end of the island.

The hotel has a contemporary, quite futuristic interior filled with dangling glass installations yet still distinctly Arabic styling.  There are 293 rooms available (including interconnecting and villas with private pools). Facilities include three swimming pools, a 400m stretch of beach and tennis courts.

There is no shortage of food options, with seven on-site restaurants, a poolside bar and room service.

It has one of Saadiyat’s most extensive spas with 15 treatment rooms, and kids are not forgotten either with complimentary kids and teens clubs (for over 4’s).

Is There A budget Hotel Offering On Saadiyat Island?

Not really.  The cheapest offers apply only to single rooms, off-peak, and start at around 750 AED per night, excluding meals and taxes. Saadiyat is all about luxury and relaxation, but these come with a price tag.

It is well worth keeping your eyes out for specials, though; residents may be able to scoop up a bargain in off-peak seasons (ie, when it is incredibly hot outside in July/August or the middle of winter when the Gulf is too cold for swimming!)

If it’s budget and value offering you are looking for, you are better looking to neighbouring Yas Island, including the likes of Centro Yas Island by Rotana and Park Inn by Radisson put up some great budget deals with access to Yas Beach.

Alternatively, if you still want a little bit of beach but closer to the city Le Meridien Abu Dhabi can be a good option under 500 AED or Traders Hotel Qaryat al Beri on the Grand Canal with views of the Grand Mosque and a little bit of beach frontage – you can find all the best beach hotels in Abu Dhabi here.

If you just want a daycation, Saadiyat Beach Club is a popular day pass option. Giving you all the same views, service and meals as the luxury hotels just without the cost of the overnight stay thrown in.

What Else is There to Do on Saadiyat Island?

Culture & Museums

Saadiyat’s greatest claim to fame is being home to the Louvre Abu Dhabi.  It is part of a mammoth cultural district project planned for Saadiyat Island.  The project has stalled in recent years due to the economic climate, but there are still grand plans to add additional world-class museums (which we expect to come in 2024/25).

In the meantime, the Louvre has proved a huge success and is well worthy of inclusion in your Abu Dhabi itinerary, the building alone is a stunning masterpiece.

Don’t miss Manarat Al Saadiyat too.  As well as permanent and rotating exhibitions, this multi-purpose art space is used for live performances, photography workshops and an art studio for adults and children.  Many of these events are offered free of charge.

You will also find nearby New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) on Saadiyat Island, which runs extensive exhibits and community programs throughout the year.

Recreation & Amusement Parks

Saadiyat Beach Golf Club must be one of the most stunning courses in the world (part of the Troon Golf network).  The 18-hole course overlooking the Arabian Gulf was designed by Gary Player, taking into account the island’s natural beauty and a focus on eco-consciousness.

The course includes three saltwater lakes and over 60 bunkers, making it one of the country’s most challenging.  The clubhouse includes a popular terrace event venue taking in some of Saadiyat’s best views, with dining available at Hawksbill restaurant.

Saadiyat Island is only a stone’s throw away from Yas Island. Home to the famous Yas Island Marina Circuit (hosting the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix each November), it’s also where you will find Abu Dhabi’s BIG THREE popular theme parks – Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi, Yas Waterworld and Ferrari World. 

Anyone visiting with kids will want to check out this award-winning collection and the nearby Yas Marina, home to many superyachts and a vibrant strip of bars and restaurants.

Wildlife on Saadiyat Island

Saadiyat Island is home to the critically endangered Hawksbill Turtle. During the breeding season, many of the hotels listed above have additional programs, and each engages in their own way between nature and the community. Hatching sites are protected by strict environmental measures and are patrolled by trained personnel who continually monitor the reproduction of the turtles.

You can also capture more of Abu Dhabi’s marine life at adjacent Jubail Island and the Jubail Mangrove Park.

Saadiyat Beach

There is a section of Saadiyat Island reserved as public beach frontage. Saadiyat Beach is accessed by a road adjacent to the Park Hyatt.  Here you can look to rent beach chairs and umbrellas, or simply pull up your towel on the pristine white sands.  Do note that the dunes are a protected area due to the wildlife that calls them home. You will find a protective boardwalk along the edge of the beach.

This section of the beach is now managed by Kai Beach (owned by Saadiyat Beach Club) – so there’s now quite a hefty price tag attached to daily beach chair hire. If you don’t want to pay and don’t need the facilities, simply bring your towels and gear and head further along.

Alternatively, there’s Soul Beach also located on Saadiyat Island, part of the newly opened Mamsha Al Saadiyat complex. It is open to the public, although a daily charge is also applied for use of their deck chairs and umbrellas.

If you’re interested in a luxury beachfront apartment during your stay in Abu Dhabi, you will find plenty of Al Mamsha properties listed through platforms such as Booking.com, which are well worth considering as an alternative to the luxury resorts if you like a little extra space on your beach vacation.

Abu Dhabi may be well known as a tax-free earnings haven for many of its international expatriate workers, but, make no mistake, there are many other taxes along the way!

In this Abu Dhabi tourist tax guide, we’ll explain what sort of taxes you can expect to pay as a visitor to the UAE, how the 5% VAT introduced in 2018 works, the 2023 tourism tax updates and refunds available to tourists.

Abu Dhabi Hotel Taxes

When you are booking a hotel online for Abu Dhabi, it is VERY likely you are being quoted the gross price for just the hotel room – BEFORE many taxes which are payable directly to the hotel.

The taxes on Abu Dhabi hotels have changed significantly over the years, but as of 1 September 2023, you can expect to pay:

• VAT 5% (should be included in the price you’re quoted)
• Property Service Charge 10%
• Tourism Fee 4% (reduced from 6%)
• Municipality Fee 4%
• Destination Fee abolished (was 15 AED per room, per night)

This can put the total cost of your quoted stay at nearly 20% more than the listed price on booking platforms.

If you are booking through an agency or a package tour, be very specific in asking whether these taxes have been included or excluded so there are no nasty shocks when you arrive at your accommodation in Abu Dhabi.

Dining Taxes in Abu Dhabi

When you are dining in a hotel restaurant, ordering room service or drinks at a bar, you can also expect the following charges to be added to your bill:

• Service Charge 10%
• Municipality fee 4%
• Tourism Fee 4%
• VAT 5%

In restaurants not attached to a hotel, you should expect to pay only the 5% VAT, which by law should be included in the listed price of a menu item.

You are not required as a restaurant customer to leave a tip in the UAE. Many customers will either round up or simply add 10-15% if they are happy with the service, but there’s not an expectation as you’d find in North America, for example.

In a food court fast food outlet in Abu Dhabi, you should expect to pay:

• Only the 5% VAT. This should be included in your quoted price.

Purchasing food in a supermarket

• All supermarket food is subject to the 5% VAT; there are no zero-rated food items.

What About Alcohol in Abu Dhabi? Is it taxed?

As you might know, alcohol IS available for non-Muslims in Abu Dhabi from licensed outlets.

Alcohol incurs tax at the point it is imported, though you won’t see this tax broken down as a separate line item on your purchase, it’s built into the supplier’s cost. The only tax you will see as the consumer is VAT, which is included in the shelf price.

• NB a 30% alcohol tax was applicable for a few years in Abu Dhabi emirate, but this was abolished in 2023.

If you are consuming the drink in a bar or restaurant, VAT, municipality, tourism and service charges will apply as above.

Other Taxes and Excises in Abu Dhabi

Other items in Abu Dhabi and the UAE that you may not realise are additionally taxed include carbonated drinks, energy drinks, electronic smoking devices and tobacco products. The excise tax on these goods is 50 to 100%.

Abu Dhabi Tax Refund for Tourists Scheme

When VAT was first introduced in 2018, tourists still had to pay the full amount of VAT.

Since 18 November 2018, tourists only temporarily in the UAE can now apply for a VAT refund, operated by Planet, on behalf of the Federal Tax Authority. There are, of course, conditions:

• Goods must be purchased from a retailer who is participating in the ‘Tax Refund for Tourists Scheme’.
• Goods are not excluded from the Refund Scheme of the Federal Tax Authority.
• You must have the explicit intention to leave the UAE in 90 days from the date of supply, along with the purchased supplies.
• You must export the purchased goods out of the UAE within three months from the date of supply.
• The process of purchase and export of goods must be carried out according to the requirements and procedures determined by the Federal Tax Authority.
• You will receive 85% of the total VAT amount paid, minus a fee of 4.80 dirhams per Tax-Free tag
• Minimum spend 250 AED.

You’ll be pleased to learn that you can stay within a stone’s throw of all of the Yas Island action. Yas Plaza is home to a number of budget-friendly hotels, each with its own amenities and complimentary access to Yas Beach. It’s the best area to stay for thrill seekers on a budget.

Conveniently located within walking distance to both Yas Marina and Yas Marina Circuit and the new Yas Bay Waterfront (home of the Etihad Arena), it’s the perfect place to stay, especially during the cooler months.

In warmer weather, you may wish to make use of the complimentary bus service that runs between the plaza hotels and all of Yas Island’s major tourist attractions, including Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, Yas Mall, Yas Links and Yas Marina. Getting a taxi is also no problem as there is a taxi rank conveniently located at the front of the plaza.

Another stunning five-star resort with a beautiful pool area and fantastic spa facilities. This hotel is good for families due to the variety of swimming pools and well-run kids club. There are, however, adult-only areas of the pool terrace and beach.

Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort

The modern Jumeirah Resort is of a very high standard. Rooms are spacious and modern, and the communal areas are well thought out. Breakfast is served buffet-style in the chic White restaurant and includes local and international flavours. Dining options include the outstanding Tean restaurant, which serves up a variety of Arabian delicacies, including a large selection of Levantine wines.

The pool area is separated into three sections with two adult/family pools and a smaller kids pool with splash features. There is a kids club and a children’s playground.

As if all of this wasn’t enough, the spa facilities are truly excellent and include a Himalayan salt chamber as well as a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna.

Other benefits to staying on Saadiyat Island

The hotels are all close to the Saadiyat Cultural District, which features the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the new Guggenheim development.

Saadiyat is also one of the best places in Abu Dhabi to capture the sunset, and with numerous beachside bars and restaurants, offering the perfect place for a romantic evening.

The closest hotel to Abu Dhabi International Airport is The Premier Inn Abu Dhabi International Airport. Prices start at 389 AED. Night-use rooms are also available at the airport for around 850 AED.

Note that the airport is only a stones’ throw away from Yas Island, making any of the Yas Island hotels mentioned here a great choice too for those wanting to stay under 10 minutes from the airport.

Which hotels have the best view of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque?

Sadly, building work along the canal means that the hotels that once boasted views of the mosque can now only offer glimpses. The only hotel where good views of the mosque are still possible is The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi.

The Ritz-Carlton is a beautiful property with Italian features and a stunning pool area. It boasts some wonderful restaurants both in the hotel itself and the adjacent Venetian Village. You can expect to pay around 1038 AED per night for a standard room.

A slightly cheaper but lovely option is the Shangri-La, which also features excellent restaurants as well as a small souk selling a variety of traditional items, Qaryat al Beri.

Each of the hotels in the Bab Al Bahr area has its own private beach area and outdoor pools – just don’t expect the same quality sand as you’d find on Saadiyat.

Which Abu Dhabi hotels are closest to the shopping malls?

There are shopping malls all over Abu Dhabi; they are not restricted to the downtown area. In fact, two of the best malls, The Galleria and Yas Mall are on completely different islands!

Staying at one of the hotels listed above will give you easy access to Yas Mall, but if you want to ‘shop til you drop’ at Abu Dhabi’s largest mall, The Galleria, staying on Al Maryah Island at the Rosewood Hotel might be the thing for you.

The Rosewood Abu Dabi is a stunning five-star hotel with a variety of high-end bars and eateries. Restaurants include the buffet restaurant Aqua (which hosts a fantastic family Brunch) and the authentic and atmospheric Cantonese restaurant Dai Pai Dong.

The speakeasy-style Dragon’s Tooth Bar will transport you to a romantic era with top-quality cocktails and exceptional service. Underground cellar La Cava also hosts daily cheese and wine nights that no connoisseur should miss!

The hotel has a number of al fresco dining spaces, which make the most of the excellent views across the water towards the skyscrapers of the city. There is a good-sized rooftop pool and an awesome kids club with well-trained staff.

Which hotel should I pick for a romantic getaway in Abu Dhabi?

Whilst it is easy to be seduced by the luxuriousness of The Emirates Palace or the glittering sea views and quality dining experiences provided by The St. Regis on Saadiyat, who wouldn’t want to be whisked away to a quiet desert island? Nurai Island, just a 12-minute boat ride from Abu Dhabi, offers the height of luxury on a private desert island.

Accommodation at the Nurai Island Resort is provided in small beach-side bungalows, which feature a large open-plan living space and outdoor terrace with a private pool.

There are larger shared pools and beach spaces at the island’s two main F&B hubs, which are found by the pier and at South Beach. Restaurants by the Pier include Frangipani and Hooked, as well as Ginger Mermaid, a lively beach bar.

There is also a beautiful spa, a fantastic children’s play area, a water park, and a kids’ club in this area. Alternatively, South Beach is a chilled-out party zone with a lively bar and pizza restaurant, a surfing pool and swings and hammocks for grown-ups. The rest of the island is remarkably tranquil and can be explored on foot or by bicycle.

A one-night weekend stay at Nurai Island is likely to cost somewhere in the region of 14,000 AED, which includes taxes and boat transfer.

Alternatively, for a romantic desert experience, Anantara Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort cannot be beaten. Whether you stay in a standard room, villa with a pool or at the traditional Bedouin Camp, this hotel really is something special. A 1-night weekend stay will cost around 3,200 AED.

Where can I stay in Abu Dhabi on a shoestring budget?

Although it’s a city synonymous with luxury hotels, budget travellers aren’t entirely forgotten in Abu Dhabi.

The 3-star Centro Hotels operated by Rotana are a great budget alternative to some of Abu Dhabi’s flashier properties. They are often built next to Rotana hotels, and guests can use the Rotana’s facilities, which generally include gyms, saunas, a swimming pool and a spa. Prices usually start around AED 300 for these properties.

The Premier Inn also has a few locations in Abu Dhabi, including at Capital Gate, close to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). People familiar with Premier Inns in the UK may be surprised to know that the Abu Dhabi incarnations have swimming pools and in-room refrigerators. Prices start at 250 AED per night.

There are other budget hotels around with rooms available from around 200 AED per night (as of January 2024) at the Villagio Hotel on Al Salaam Street and also at the Khalidiya Hotel in Khalidiya.

Which hotel is best for families in Abu Dhabi?

The UAE is a very family-friendly country. Most hotels cater well for children. All of the Saadiyat hotels, as well as most 5-star hotels along the Corniche, have Kids’ Clubs as well as children’s pools and splash areas. Buffet restaurants also provide a variety of child-friendly foods.

Budget hotels tend to be less child-friendly, particularly in downtown Abu Dhabi, simply for lack of extra facilities such as pools and playgrounds.

Are there any golf resorts in Abu Dhabi?

There are numerous golf courses in Abu Dhabi, all with hotels within easy reach. The most convenient golf-course/hotel combo can be found at Abu Dhabi Golf Club and the Westin Golf Resort and Spa (recently renamed VOGO)

VOGO is a well-managed property with direct access to the adjacent golf course. The hotel is relaxed but offers a high standard of customer care with excellent dining and spa facilities. The pool area is well-kept and includes an adult-only pool as well as a family pool.

Weekend brunches and afternoon tea at the Westin are reasonably priced and beautifully put together, so make sure that you treat yourself during your stay!

There are a variety of camping and glamping spots around the emirate of Abu Dhabi, but the only sites within the city limits can be found at Al Hudayriyat and at Jubail Mangroves.

A new luxury island destination to look forward to in Abu Dhabi

News this month of a brand new villa-only exclusive resort will open on Abu Dhabi’s private Al Nawras Island.

Due to open in 2023, the exclusive LXR Hotels & Resorts property (a sub-brand of Hilton) will comprise of 80 beach and water villas, as well as a 450-square-metre, two-bedroom Royal Villa.

The focus of the resorts will be leisure and well-being. As well as a golf course, expect to see a gym, fitness studio, tennis and padel courts, three swimming pools, a private marina, beach club and luxury spa.

The little ones are not forgotten with a playground, family swimming pool, splash pad and kids club.

For dining and drinks, the resort will comprise two signature restaurants with indoor and al fresco dining areas, as well as two bars and a wellness-inspired café.
