Louvre Abu Dhabi

The first internationally recognised museum to open in Abu Dhabi, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, takes visitors on a journey through humanity, with carefully curated collections providing an overview of global civilisation across the ages.

In addition to the permanent galleries that link cultures through specific aspects of development, temporary exhibitions often have a regional focus. There is also a thoughtfully designed children’s museum, with hands-on activities perfect for younger visitors.

The building itself is also an architectural phenomenon. It has an enormous aesthetic appeal, which drives photographers and influencers to visit.

Note that a dress code is observed in respect of local decency rules and that photos should not be taken of individuals without their permission.

Abrahamic House

Although not actually a museum, the collection of religious buildings here is well worth a stop on the itinerary of culture-seekers traveling through Abu Dhabi.

Abrahamic House brings together the Ahmed El-Tayeb Mosque, the Moses Ben Maimon Synagogue, and St Francis Church. Each is a cubic building of the same size but exhibits the architectural characteristics characteristic of its building type.

Entrance Fee: It’s free to take a group tour (though this should be pre-booked; walk-ins may not be accommodated)

Guggenheim (coming soon)

The country’s first modern and contemporary art museum will feature artists from across the globe with an emphasis on West Asia, Northern Africa, and southern Asia.

Surrounded on three sides by the waters of the Arabian Gulf, the building will also serve as a man-made breakwater and stand out as a work of art in its own right.

Originally intended to open alongside the Louvre nearly a decade ago, the project was delayed by substantial cutbacks in 2010, and it’s now scheduled to open in 2026.

Zayed National Museum

The National Museum of the UAE honors the legacy of the country’s founding father, Sheik Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. It will have six permanent galleries, temporary exhibits, and the Al Masar garden.

This section will cover the country’s archaeological heritage, its coastal connections to pearling, fishing, and trade, its role in national identity, the spread of Islam, and the impact of new technology.

Abu Dhabi Natural History Museum

Open in November 2025, this museum features Stan, the world’s most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton. The brand-new Natural History Museum in Abu Dhabi is a great place for budding naturalists and adult explorers alike to explore the 13.8-billion-year story of our universe.

Manarat Al Saadiyat

The first building in the Saadiyat Culture District has long served as a showroom for the island’s development, but it now stands for so much more.

TeamLab Phenomena

Home to 25 immersive digital works, this modern museum offers the chance to walk through art in a sensory experience like no other.

Entrance Fee: Adult tickets cost 150 AED; children ages 4-12 pay 50 AED; children under four enter for free. Weekday evenings are open to adults only from 6:00 PM.

Museums in other areas of the city of Abu Dhabi

Qasr Al Hosn

Often referred to as the birthplace of Abu Dhabi, this historic fort and museum is located in downtown Abu Dhabi, on the same block as the Cultural Foundation and the House of Artisans (both included in your entrance fee).

Falcon Hospital

As well as getting the chance to see behind the scenes at this internationally renowned avian hospital, there is also a small museum of artefacts showcasing the history of falconry that you can see as part of a guided tour of this fascinating cultural attraction.

Entrance Fee: 170 AED per adult plus VAT for a 2-hour tour. Tours must be booked in advance via the website.

Qasr al Watan

The presidential palace is not really a museum, but it does contain collections of gifts presented to the rulers of the UAE by foreign dignitaries. It provides a unique record of the recent history of the UAE, and is a beautiful building to visit in its own right. It is also the venue for many international diplomatic receptions and as such, a place where history is literally being made.

Entrance Fee: From AED 65 for adults and from AED 30 for children.

Heritage Village

Situated on the marina breakwater, this small village is run by Abu Dhabi Culture. Built in the traditional style, the village includes houses and workshops featuring a wide variety of exhibits from Abu Dhabi’s past. There’s also a small-holding area with livestock, a few market stalls and a great view back over the water to Abu Dhabi Corniche.

It’s now a little dated and often overlooked in favour of the larger, newer developments around the city, but it is still worth a visit for those who want to experience aspects of the local culture firsthand without the gloss.

There are honestly better spots these days to get your cultural fix, but since many tours still stop here, we think it’s important to still include this little slice of UAE history.

Al Maqta’a Museum

Freshly renovated and reopened in May 2025, this former Customs House was built in the 1950s to monitor entry to Abu Dhabi when the first causeway was constructed to Abu Dhabi island (Now dwarfed by the much larger Sheikh Zayed Bridge).

Although there were no further customs checks upon unification, the building has been preserved for its socio-cultural importance as a shared effort between the Department of Culture and Tourism and the Abu Dhabi Police.

The exhibits focus on policing across decades and will, in due course, feature seasonal activations.

Other Historical Places of Interest in Abu Dhabi

Not all museums per se, but other buildings and monuments of interest include:

• Look for the modern heritage plaques at about 60 sites across the city.
• Wahat Al Karama is opposite the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque. This small memorial contains not only a monument to the UAE’s martyred soldiers but also a small information centre well worth a stop on an Abu Dhabi city tour.

Museums in the Abu Dhabi Emirate

Beyond the city, there are several other places of interest that history buffs will want to look out for. Many are located in Al Ain, which we cover in more detail here. The highlights include:

• Al Ain Museum recently reopened after a closure spanning many years. This museum houses many of the artefacts found in the Hili Archaeological site (part of the UNESCO sites of Al Ain), dating back to the Neolithic period.
• Al Ain Palace Museum (temporarily closed) – the former residential home of the founding father, Sheikh Zayed. This museum offers a fascinating look at the Al Nayhan family tree and insight into what it would have been like to grow up as part of the royal family.

• Qasr al Muwaiji – a closer look at the childhood home of Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed, 2nd President of the UAE, and the previous administration office for the Ruler’s Representative of Al Ain. Walk through both the historic fort and visit the modern exhibition centre telling the story of the fort and its inhabitants,
• Al Jahili Fort – one of the largest forts in the UAE. Built in 1891, the fort was built by Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan to protect local date farmers. The building now houses a photographic collection by British Explorer Wilfred Thesiger, which is well worth a look.
• Zayed Desert Learning Center –This multi-floor learning centre is found within Al Ain Zoo. It covers a fascinating journey from the country’s geology to present-day sustainability.

Emirates Auto Museum

A genuinely unique experience housed in a pyramid-style structure, around 45 minutes from the city as you head into the Liwa Desert. Explore Sheikh Hamdan’s quirky collectibles, including the world’s largest SUV (housing a 4-bedroom apartment!) and the World’s largest caravan!

You can combine a trip here with a drive to Al Dhafra/Western Region or make it a simple half-day trip from the city, though you’ll need access to a car.

Delma Museum

Tucked away on the remote Delma Island in the country’s Western Region, approximately 2 hours west of the city, is the small but historically significant former pearl merchants’ home. Also known as Bait Al Muraikhi, it has been transformed into a treasure trove of finds from the 19th and 20th centuries.

It is open daily, 9:00 am to 2:30 pm (Sun-Thu) and 9:00 am to 12:00 pm on Fridays.

Al Dhafra Fort Museum

The Al Dhafra Fort museum honours the 20 or so nomadic and settled tribes that once defended the region. The local area is dotted with the remains of forts and guard towers built by these tribes, some of which can be visited after a trip to the museum; note that most offer no facilities.

Open daily from 9.00 am until 2.30 pm (12.00noon on Friday)

Museums in Dubai & The Northern Emirates

Many visitors likely pair a trip to Dubai with one to Abu Dhabi. If you’re looking for some of the more cultural aspects, pop over to our Dubai Travel Planner site, where we discuss in much greater detail all the museums in Dubai, including:

Other Dubai’s Heritage Sites

In addition, if you’d like to dig below the glossy surface of Dubai, you could also work in stops in your itinerary to:

• Al Ahmadiya School – Dubai’s oldest formal educational institution.
• Majlis Ghorfat Umm Al Sheif – The former home of Sheikh Rashid bin Saaed Al Maktoum
• Heritage House– Traditional house in an old neighbourhood that gives an insight into life in times gone by.
• Jumeirah Fishing Harbour – a unique and tranquil coastal setting in a suburban area of the city with some of the city’s best underrated seafood dining.
• Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood – Stunning historical district full of traditional houses and winding alleyways. Many of the houses have been converted into art galleries, museums (as mentioned above), and cafes.

Note that you are highly unlikely to find a commerical tour that will encompass these sites of interests; you’ll need to self-plan your own guided tour with a private driver or hire a car in the UAE and create your own itinerary.

Sharjah

Sharjah is often referred to as the cultural capital of the UAE. If you are interested in learning more about Islamic culture, consider dedicating a day or two of your trip to the UAE. The most notable stops in Sharjah include:

• Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization – A comprehensive collection showcasing Islamic art, science, culture, and history from across the Muslim world.
• Sharjah Natural History & Botanical Museum – An educational centre where families can explore the UAE’s wildlife, geology, and desert ecosystems through interactive exhibits.
• Sharjah Classic Car Museum – A nostalgic gallery featuring vintage and rare automobiles dating from the early 20th century to modern classics.
• Sharjah Archaeology Museum – A fascinating look at Sharjah’s ancient past, with artefacts spanning thousands of years of human settlement in the region.
• Sharjah Art Museum – One of the UAE’s leading art institutions, home to modern and contemporary works by regional and international artists.
• Sharjah Maritime Museum – A tribute to the emirate’s seafaring heritage, highlighting traditional boats, pearl diving, and life along the Gulf coast.

Other Northern Emirates

Not to be forgotten, each of the Emirates (there are 7 Emirates in total) has a museum of varying quality. If your UAE travels take you further north, you may also be interested in checking out:

• Ras Al Khaimah – also worth a visit are Al Jazeera Al Hamra traditional neighbourhood, the Mohammed Bin Salem Mosque, and the Al Dhayah Fort

Hidden Gems and Must-See Landmarks for Your Day Trip

Al Ain, also known as the Oasis City or the Garden City, is the second-largest city in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Settlement here dates back some 5,000 years to the Neolithic period, and is considered by many to be Abu Dhabi’s cultural heartland.

Sitting on the border with Oman, Al Ain is a great day trip location from Abu Dhabi and home to the UAE’s only current tangible UNESCO World Heritage Site (actually several historical sites collectively known as the Cultural Sites of Al Ain).

Al Ain is also where you will find yourself closest to nature in Abu Dhabi; whether you choose to ascend the stunning mountain of Jebel Hafeet, stroll around the beautiful, shady oasis, or visit the impressive zoo or camel market, there are simply loads of things to see and do in Al Ain, and it should have deserved a spot on any UAE itinerary.

In this article, we will explain exactly what to expect in Al Ain and how to organise a day trip or overnighter to the Oasis City from Abu Dhabi.

Why is it worth visiting Al Ain?

Far more than just the UNESCO cultural sites, Al Ain has been at the crossroads of Arabian civilisation for centuries. During the hottest times of the year, the Bedouin would retreat from the coast to the desert, where the natural oasis provided a cooling reprieve. 

In recent tmes, the city has been the birthplace of the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan al Nahyan, the UAE’s second ruler, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed al Nahyan and current ruler, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan

How to Get to Al Ain From Abu Dhabi

Al Ain is around 160 km from Abu Dhabi. There are four main ways you can get to Al Ain from Abu Dhabi as a tourist:

• Rent or borrow your own vehicle
• Take public transport
• Hire a driver or taxi each way
• Join an organised tour group

While public transport from Abu Dhabi to Al Ain is possible, it is best to hire a car and self-drive.

The journey takes less than 2 hours, and there are plenty of places to stop along the way for refreshments or to pull over to a safe spot and take pictures of the dunes, camels, and other notable sites on the way into the city.

It’s also likely to be hot, and having your car means you can easily travel from site to site within the city without having to wait for buses or taxis. Hiring a private driver or taxi is also possible, but it will likely be expensive.

We would also recommend having your own vehicle if you are traveling with children or people with mobility issues. Alternatively, you could join an organised tour group to get the most out of your visit to Al Ain (we recommend some groups you can join below!)

If you want to take public transport from Abu Dhabi to Al Ain, we recommend taking the X90 from Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station. You must buy a Hafilat Card at the station in order to use the bus as drivers are unable to accept cash. The first bus departs at 6.45 am and then roughly every hour until 11.45 pm. The journey takes around 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Getting Around Within Al Ain

Al Ain has a fairly good public transport system with decent local buses and a fleet of easily identifiable taxis. Uber and its local equivalent, Careem, are also available.

That said, Al Ain’s sites are all quite spread out, and the heat makes waiting around for buses and drivers somewhat less than appealing for many.

Key Attractions to Visit in Al Ain

We will include here a list of all the major historic sites and attractions in Al Al Ain, but be aware you’ll never be able to fit them all into one day, especially if you rely on public transport or a guided tour. There isn’t time for it all! Below are some itinerary suggestions to fit as much as possible into your time in Al Ain.

Al Ain Oasis

Several Oases in Al Ain make up the UNESCO World Heritage Site, namely:

• Al Ain Oasis
• Al Muatared Oasis
• Al Jimi Oasis
• Al Qattara Oasis 
• Al Hili Oasis

The largest is Al Ain Oasis, located in the city centre. Extensive restoration works have taken place on the site, which reopened to the public in 2016 and is now the city’s most popular attraction.

The oasis was nearly lost beneath the city as rapid development occurred in the 1980s and 1990s. Fortunately, the need to preserve the site due to its archaeological, cultural, and ecological importance became apparent, and the 3,000-acre site now contains more than 147,000 palm trees.

The grounds also contain an old fortification and mosque, as well as the channels and cisterns of the impressive falaj irrigation system for which Al Ain is famous.  

As you wander the tranquil pathways under the shade of more than 140,000 palm trees, you transcend time and see life as it was hundreds of years ago.

The labyrinthine structure of the oasis holds many surprises, many of which were nearly lost beneath the city as rapid development occurred in the 1980s and 1990s. Begin your journey at West Gate Plaza, where you will find a 3D representation of the oasis and its ancient falaj (irrigation) system, as well as a small indoor installation with images of the oasis projected onto a shimmering pool of water.

In addition to toilet facilities, vending machines, and a cafe, you can hire bikes, quadricycles, and golf buggies to make your trip through the oasis even more enjoyable.

For a complete understanding of the oasis, head to the date-shaped building on the outer perimeter of the oasis (just to the east of the Oasis Plaza) for a variety of interactive demonstrations showing the history and development of the site.

The Oasis is open 8 am to 5 pm daily and free to enter.

Other UNESCO Sites of Al Ain

Although consisting of only one listing, The Al Ain sites are, in fact, made up of several sites; Hafit, Hili, Bidaa Bint Saud and Oases Areas. 

These sites testify to human occupation of the desert region since the Neolithic period with vestiges of many prehistoric cultures – notably the Bronze Age and the Iron Age; examples include:

• Circular stone tombs (dated back to c2500 BC)
• Residential buildings, towers, palaces and administrative buildings
• Examples of the earliest falaj irrigation system

Al Hili Archaeological Park

Home to the largest discovered Bronze Age settlement in the UAE, the park is a living museum of tombs, settlements, and a falaj—mostly, only foundations can be spotted today.

Most significant items have been moved into the collections of the central Al Ain National Museum. Unfortunately, the museum building is being rebuilt, and there is no specified reopening date.

The park is open limited hours 4 pm to 11 pm daily, entry is free.

Jebel Hafeet Bee Hive Tombs

Found at the foot of Abu Dhabi’s highest peak, Jebel Hafeet, the circular Bee Hive Tombs are thought to date back up to 5,000 years. The artefacts found within the tombs have helped archaeologists substantiate claims of trade routes dating to around 3,200 to 2,700 BCE.

Previously, it was very easy in a 4WD car to just drive up to the tombs. However, under preservation efforts since February 2020, the tombs now fall within the Jebel Hafit Desert Park. There is a small 5 AED per person fee to enter.

The desert park is quite extensive though, with hiking and biking available, along with camel rides, dune buggy experiences, and even overnight camping in Bedouin-style tents and eco-glamping options (although these are currently unavailable – we expect them to reopen soon for winter 2024-25).

Bidaa Bint Saud 

There are several small finds near one another contributing to this archaeological site, sitting about 15kms to the north of Al Ain:

• Numerous rectangular, stone-constructed tombs from the Hafit period (3200 to 2600 BC) on top of a mountain called Gharn bint Saud
• 1,500 metres to the west is a 3,000-year-old falaj system
• A large mudbrick building with column bases was found near the falaj, which was thought to perhaps be a distribution point for the falaj.

This site is quite isolated and not easily accessible to the public. Finds from the site are also housed in the Al Ain National Museum. You can learn more about this site on abudhabiculture.ae

Al Ain Palace Museum

The Al Ain Palace was the home of Sheikh Zayed, the nation’s founder, until 1966 when the family relocated to the city of Abu Dhabi. In 1998, the palace was turned into a museum. It is one of the most interesting sites in Al Ain for history buffs. Unfortunately, it is currently closed for essential repairs and visitor experience improvements (Summer/Autumn 2024).

Other Museums in Al Ain

• Qasr al Muwaiji – A fully restored fortified palace west of the city. The fort is an excellent example of mud brick architecture and was built around 1900.
• Al Jahili Fort – Built to protect palm farmers in 1891. The fort is worth visiting for its exhibition celebrating the travels of Wilfred Thesiger, as well as for its mud brick architecture.
• Al Ain National Museum houses an extensive collection of artefacts from Al Ain and the surrounding area (currently closed for renovations).

Souk Al Qattara

Located in the Al Qattara area of Al Ain, Souk Al Qattara offers a traditional handicraft market every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from October to May. It’s a great place to pick up souvenirs and soak up the atmosphere. The site now includes an arts centre and the restored Al Qattara Fort. 

Art centre open daily from 9.00 am until 8.00pm.

Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Mosque

The Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Mosque is a stunning new mosque in the heart of Al Ain.

It is the largest mosque in Al Ain, opened to the public in 2021, and can accommodate more than 20,000 worshippers. The magnificent dome is adorned with Quranic verses and sits between four proud minarets, which look particularly stunning at sunset.

Al Ain Camel Market

Situated on Zayed Bin Sultan Street, not far from the Al Bawadi Mall, the camel market provides the opportunity to see hundreds of camels, sheep, and goats being bought and sold. It’s the only market of its kind in the UAE and is definitely worth a visit.

Open daily from 6.00am until 7.00pm. Entry is free.

Jebel Hafeet

The highest point in Abu Dhabi emirate (second highest point in the UAE), it is well worth the 30 minutes or so drive up the incredibly steep and winding road to the peak at 1240m for the incredible view across the city and down into neighbouring Oman.

Along the road to the summit, you will find view points and picnic areas and playgrounds. Just before you reach the top of the mountain there is a turning for the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet Hotel.

We recommend this as a great place to refresh yourself or potentially stay overnight. To reach the summit, continue up the main road, until you reach a large parking area. Here you will find excellent chai Karak as well as stunning views.

The Green Mubazzarah

The name ‘Jebel Hafeet’ means ‘Green Mountain’ and whilst there is certainly less vegetation than the name suggests, there are areas where some species of plant have flourished, such as the Green Mubazzarah, where hot springs flow from the mountain onto the plain below.

The area has become a resort in its own right with an artificial boating lake, bikes for rent and chalets to stay in overnight. There is also a swimming pool with a charge of 5 AED and a little train that will take you around the site with a charge of 25 AED for adults and 15 AED for children.

Weekends here are very busy, as families come from all over the UAE annd even from over the border in Oman to enjoy the parklands and dip their feet in the healing waters!

Al Ain Zoo & Safari

Another family-friendly option whilst in Al Ain is a visit to Al Ain Zoo. Along with large enclosures featuring a range of animals from around the world, the zoo offers a safari experience and the chance to drive through the vast reserve area in the safety and comfort of an air-conditioned vehicle.

If you want to do more than observe the animals from afar there are a number of animal experiences on offer, including giraffe feeding (additional fee payable at the giraffe enclosure).

Ideal One-Day Itineraries For Al Ain

So how can you make the most of your day-trip to Al Ain. Here we’ve put together a one-day itinerary which combines the best of what Al Ain has to offer along with plenty of time to soak up the atmosphere.

• Depart Abu Dhabi early (around 8.00am) to arrive in Al Ain by 10.00 am.
• Start your visit at Qasr Al Muwiji before driving up Jebel Hafeet to the Mercure Hotel (you could also make a detour to the camel market and/or beehive tombs before ascending the mountain).
• Enjoy stunning views from the poolside restaurant over a light lunch. The hotel has great views of the city and a variety of geological features.
• Once refreshed, descend the mountain and head to the Al Ain Oasis, parking by the Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum.
• Follow the footpath from the Sheikh Zayed Palace Musuem to the Oasis Plaza, visit the exhibition space en route, and explore the oasis on foot, by bicycle, or by buggy.
• Finish the day at the Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum (when open) and enjoy hearing the sunset call to prayer before enjoying dinner at a local restaurant, or, if time permits, head to Souk Al Qattara for a bit of shopping and look around the arts centre and some delicious street food.

With families, we’d suggest:

• Leave Abu Dhabi around 7.00 am.
• Arrive at Al Ain Zoo around 9.00 am. Enjoy strolling around the expansive site, making sure to visit the creatures high on your must see list as early in the day as possible.
• As the temperature rises, head to the Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre (within the zoo grounds) for the chance to cool off and learn more about life in this unique biome.
• There are plenty of places to have lunch within the zoo, including a small cafe in the Zayed Desert Learning centre and the Zarafa Restaurant in the centre of the site.
• After lunch, enjoy a drive up Jebel Hafeet for stunning views and light refreshments at the Mercure Hotel, give the children chance to play at the lovely playground before heading back down the mountain to the Al Ain Oasis.
• Take a stroll around the oasis before visiing the Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum (when open), or enjoy a picnic by the West Gate as the sun sets.
• Head to Souk Al Qattara for a little shopping.
• 8.30 pm return to Abu Dhabi. It’s a long day, but worth it, and hey, the kid’s can sleep in the car!

A Full Weekend Itinerary in Al Ain

If time permits, with a full weekend in Al AIn (remembering the weekend in Abu Dhabi starts from lunchtime on Friday!), you can potentially fit in most of our highlights list, your itinerary may look more like:

Friday

• Visit the Green Mubazzarah on your way up to the Mercure Hotel at the top of Jebel Hafeet. Enjoy lunch and a few drinks whilst taking in the view.
• Around 4.00 pm, descend the mountain and head to the Al Hili Archaeological Park via the beehive tombs (note it is a 35-minute drive between the beehive tombs and Al Hili Archaeological Park).
• Take a stroll around the site before finding a bite to eat.

Saturday

• Visit the camel market early in the morning before heading to Qasr Al Muwaji.
• Head to the Jahili Fort via a photo stop at the Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Mosque.
• Take lunch at the nearby Rotana Hotel, before heading to the Al Ain Oasis.
• Explore the oasis on foot, bike or buggy, before heading to the Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum (if open), roughly an hour before sunset.
• Enjoy looking around the museum and the sunset call to prayer before driving to Souk Al Qattara for shopping and dinner.

Sunday

• Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before driving to Al Ain Adventure. Get your adrenaline pumping with some white water rafting, kayaking and other thrilling activities.
• After all of that thrill seeking, why not enjoy a late lunch at Italian inspired restaurant Azzurro, or the Lebanese Habib Beirut.

Where to Stay in Al Ain – Best Accommodation

Al Ain has a reasonable range of accommodation options if you are looking to extend your trip to Al Ain. You will certainly need more than two days to capture all the highlights of the Oasis City. Most resorts and hotels are a little dated, but you can find a bargain resort retreat. Our favourites are:

Guided Tours of Al Ain

Guided tours are a great way to see a lot of key sites in a day. A knowledgeable guide can add to your understanding of a site and can ensure that you don’t miss out on any little details or hidden gems.

But, with a guided tour, you are limited to a set amount of time in each place that you visit. You may really enjoy visiting one place but be forced to leave before you are ready or find you have limited time for shopping or refreshments.

If you’re travelling with children, you may find that the tours try to squeeze too much in without sufficient rest breaks or that the schedule doesn’t match the heat of the day and find yourself walking around sites when you’d rather be sat down enjoying a cold beverage.

We recommend self-guiding a trip to Al Ain. Most museums have well-produced guides, and some, like the Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum, even have audio guides. Where is Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi is the Capital City of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a Middle Eastern country.

Abu Dhabi is also the name of the Emirate (or “state”) in which it is located.

Where is the UAE located?

The UAE is situated on the Arabian Peninsula.  To its southeast, you will find Oman, and to the southwest, Saudi Arabia.   The country faces the Persian Gulf (or Arabian Gulf, depending on who you ask) and the Gulf of Oman to the east.

Is Abu Dhabi a country?

No, it is one of seven “Emirates” (or states) of the United Arab Emirates.

Is Abu Dhabi In Dubai?

No, a common misconception is that Dubai is actually the country, whereas Dubai is an Emirate, just like Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi is by far the largest of the seven Emirates of the UAE, but Dubai is the most populous (and arguably the best internationally known, hence the confusion).

The Arabian Peninsula is part of Asia. Most of the Middle East is on the Asian continent, with the exceptions of Egypt (Africa), Turkey (partly Europe), and Cyprus (closer to the Middle East but part of the EU), thefere Abu Dhabi is in Asia.

How big is Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi Emirate covers over 67,300 square kilometres, which is about 87% of the total landmass of the UAE, 83,600 square kilometres (114^th largest country in the world).

The city of Abu Dhabi – or Abu Dhabi Metropolitan Area, is 972 square kilometres, spread over several islands and the mainland of the UAE.

What is Abu Dhabi’s population?

The Statistic Centre Abu Dhabi has reported that as of 2023, the population of the Abu Dhabi Emirate is 3,789,860, of which 66% reside in metro Abu Dhabi (2.5 million).

The split between males and females is 67%/33%, mainly due to the high number of expatriate labourers from southern Asia.

Statistics from the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Authority appear outdated; however, other external sources estimate that the UAE population is between 9.9 million and 11.7 million.

Note that the UAE’s population primarily comprises expatriate workers – some sources claim up to 90%!

Is Abu Dhabi bigger than Dubai?

By land size, yes! By a long way. By population, though, Dubai is the larger city, believed to have a population of 3.77 million (Dubai Statistics Centre – August 2024).

Can you easily get between Abu Dhabi and Dubai?

Absolutely, the two cities are connected by road (there is no commuter train yet, but watch out for Etihad Rail and the touted ultra-high-speed Hyperloop!).

Travelling between the two cities can take one to two hours, depending on your start and finish point in each city.

Note that whilst there’s normally no border crossing point between the two Emirates, a border checkpoint was erected between the neighbours during the peak of COVID. Visitors from Dubai to Abu Dhabi emirate had to show they were COVID-negative or, later, a “Green pass” to cross the border.

The border crossing point is no longer used, an a Green pass is no longer required in Abu Dhabi Emirate.

What does Abu Dhabi mean?

In Arabic, it means “Land of the Gazelle”.

How old is Abu Dhabi?

There is evidence of human life in what is now the Abu Dhabi Emirate dating back 5000 years. Abu Dhabi city’s current location on the Gulf Coast dates back to the 18th century, when it was just a fishing and pearl-diving village for decades.

The discovery of oil in the 1930s started the change in the Gulf nations previously known as the Trucial States. The British withdrew from the region in the late 1960s, and a new country was born—the United Arab Emirates.

The UAE federated on 2 December 1971 under the guidance of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan, who went on to become the country’s first ruler.

This is considered the beginning of modern-day UAE and the country’s birth date.

Who is the head of Abu Dhabi

After the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan passed away in 2004, power was passed on to his first son – Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan.

Sheikh Khalifa passed away on 13 May 2022; the former Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed (MBZ) took charge and is the current ruler (Emir) of Abu Dhabi and the President de Jure of the United Arab Emirates.

The Federal Supreme Council—the seven Emirs from the seven Emirates of the UAE—determines the President and Prime Minister of the country (currently Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Emir of Dubai).

The country also has a Federal National Council with 40 seats; members are elected by Emirati citizens with varying seats determined by each Emirates’ size.

Is Abu Dhabi rich?

In relative terms to the rest of the world, yes.  The UAE holds the 7th largest oil reserves in the world, and those oil reserves sit vastly within the desert regions of Abu Dhabi bordering Saudi Arabia.

How hot does it get in Abu Dhabi?

It is no secret that this is a desert city, and things get HOT in the summer! And by hot, we mean upwards of 45°c/113°F in July and August. And don’t forget the humidity that joins the party, too, particularly in September; the “feels like” temperature in Abu Dhabi regularly ticks over 50°c/122°F.

But it’s not all bad news; there are plenty of months of the year when you get clear sunny days, blue skies, warm water, and perfect beach weather.

What is the main language in Abu Dhabi?

The official language is Arabic. However, English is widely spoken and used in the service industry. Visitors will have no problems getting by with only English.

Given the country’s expatriate nature, dozens of languages are also spoken, including Hindi, Urdu, Farsi, Bengali, Samali, Tamil, and Tagalog, to name but a few.

What is Abu Dhabi’s main religion?

The UAE has a Sunni Muslim majority, but note that as much as 85% of the population is considered expatriates. The majority of expatriates are also Muslims. However, there are large minorities of Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, and Jews—basically, all religions are represented in some way.

Tourists may note the audible sound of “the call to prayer” several times daily. As a non-Muslim tourist, you do not need to do anything, and most businesses continue to operate during prayer times, unlike some Gulf neighbours.

When are holidays marked in Abu Dhabi?

Although the country follows a standard Gregorian calendar for schools, businesses, and, of course, the seasons, the Hijri (Islamic) calendar is used to mark religious occasions, the most prominent of which is Ramadan, the Holy Month.

Note that in Abu Dhabi—and the rest of the UAE—they have shifted away from the Gulf tradition of Friday being set aside as the Holy Day. Government departments, schools, and many private businesses in the UAE moved on 1 January 2022 to a Monday to Friday work week, with Friday being a half-day so that people can still attend Friday afternoon prayers.

Saturday and Sunday are officially the weekend in Abu Dhabi, though retail and hospital businesses run seven days a week. Many blue-collar workers will only get one day off per week, usually Saturday or Sunday.

What are the top tourist attractions in Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi is home to many beautiful and fascinating modern Islamic buildings which are a must for all visitors to see and experience, including:

What food do they eat in Abu Dhabi?

Given the vast expat population, it’s easy to get hold of just about any nationality of food!

Traditional Emirati restaurants may require some more searching! You can try Meylas in Al Muneera. Also, Al Fanar Restaurant at Yas Mall has a good traditional offering.

All meat served in the UAE is Halal. The exception is pork, which is scarcely available in restaurants due to special licencing rules. You can obtain pork for home consumption at specialised supermarkets.

Can you drink alcohol in Abu Dhabi?

Whilst Muslims are forbidden from drinking alcohol, non-Muslims are free to have a drink but must abide by specific rules. For home consumption, non-Muslim expats must have a special drinking licence to purchase alcohol from specialised stores (this was abolished in 2020).

Tourists can purchase alcohol from licensed premises in Abu Dhabi, primarily bars in hotels. Some nightclubs, social clubs, and restaurants also have alcohol licenses, and an increasing number of stand-alone restaurants now have licenses to serve alcohol.

Note that drinking in public and public drunkness is strictly prohibited and comes with hefty fines and jail terms. Always keep drinking in areas where it’s allowed and in moderation.

Do I need a Visa to visit Abu Dhabi?

Yes. In some cases, you will need to organise a visit visa in advance, but there are 20 countries whose citizens can obtain a FREE 30-day visa on arrival to the UAE.

What is Abu Dhabi’s time Zone?

Abu Dhabi operates on Gulf Standard Time – GST – which is GMT/UTC +4 hours.

What is the currency in Abu Dhabi?

The common currency across the United Arab Emirates is the UAE dirham, which is written AED or sometimes dhs. It comes in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 AED notes.

1 USD = 3.67 AED; the currency is pegged to the USD, so it does not fluctuate (it will, however, fluctatuate against all other currencies in line with USD movements).

Dirhams are further broken down into fils – coins are 1 dirham, 50 fil and 25 fil coins.  Smaller coins are now non-existent, and many will simply round to the nearest dirham.

Do I need to be covered as a woman in Abu Dhabi?

No. As a visiting tourist to Abu Dhabi, women are not expected to be fully covered over heads and bodies. Out of modesty, however, women should not wear anything too tight and revealing.

Tourists should aim to cover their shoulders and knees in public—this applies to men, too. Attending religious or government buildings will require you to be fully covered. Abayas can be borrowed or bought at places such as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque for this purpose.

Do you dream of visiting majestic Arabian palaces on your visit to Abu Dhabi?

When discussing Abu Dhabi, it’s important to clarify the distinction between different sorts of palaces, particularly from a tourist perspective.

The country, ruled by Sheikhs and with an incredibly oil-rich economy, has dozens of palaces. Two of the most famous sit side by side at the end of Abu Dhabi’s famous Corniche Road. Both are magnificent buildings demonstrating the country’s wealth and power—but there’s a very distinct difference!

In this guide, we’re going to talk you through the difference between Emirates Palace and The Presidential Palace – plus other palaces you’ll find in the capital and which can be visited.

Visiting Emirates Palace

Completed in 2005 and estimated to have cost 3 billion USD, the Emirates Palace is one of the most expensive buildings ever built. However, it is not the residence of one of Abu Dhabi’s wealthy sheikhs but a luxury hotel.

Located on a 1.3 km stretch of private beach, the 84-hectare site contains 394 rooms and suites, no fewer than 9 bars and restaurants, more than 200 fountains, a theatre rivalling those of London’s West End, and a 2,500-person capacity ballroom. It also houses an award-winning spa featuring a traditional hammam, two jacuzzis, two steam rooms, and an ice cave.

The interior decor blends natural stone, antique gold, and mother of pearl juxtaposed with rich velvet and brocade fabrics, providing a sense of opulence seen in few other places.

Outside, the gardens are a veritable paradise, with thoughtfully planted areas surrounding a well-designed pool featuring water slides, a waterfall, and a lazy river.

The hotel is currently managed by premium hotel chain Mandarin Oriental, but it was initially run by luxury giant Kempinski.

How to visit Emirates Palace

The easiest way to visit is to book in one of the hotel’s restaurants. This could be for anything from a gold-dusted coffee in the lobby to a full-on candlelit dinner at one of the hotel’s fine dining restaurants.

The hotel has 9 (year-round) bars and restaurants, including several with Michelin Stars. Here’s a breakdown of what’s on offer:

• Broadway Brasserie & Bar – Elevated comfort food and curated cocktails
• Talea by Antonio Guida – A Michelin-star restaurant serving authentic Italian cuisine
• Hakkasan – A renowned Cantonese restaurant with one Michelin-star – offering some of the best Abu Dhabi night time dining views
• Martabaan by Hemant Oberoi – Contemporary Indian
• The Lebanese Terrace – A menu inspired by Lebanon’s coastal cuisine
• ALMA – Soulful Mexican cuisine
• Cascades – Poolside favourites and healthy snacks
• Vendome – An all-day international buffet restaurant
• Episodes – The revamped cafe area features various boutique stalls offering the finest selection of viennoiserie, deli sandwiches and gelato

Note that a respectable dress standard is expected within the Palace grounds and buildings. Ladies should cover their shoulders and knees, and men should wear long trousers when not at the beach or pool area.

There are also seasonal offerings at Emirates Palace:

• Sand & Koal – Open-fire cooking
• Cafe Fountain – A sunset hot spot by the front of the palace
• Various Iftar and Suhoor offerings during Ramadan

You could also book a Palace Day Pass, which gives you access to the pool and private beach facilities or arrange a treatment at the hotel’s magnificent spa. You could also sign up for a scuba diving course at the hotel’s scuba diving centre.

The Presidential Palace – Qasr Al Watan

In contrast, Qasr al Watan is “the actual Palace”. Rather than a stately historic home of the president and his family, it is, in fact, the working office and house of government for the UAE.

Sitting on vast grounds occupying 380,000 acres at the tip of Abu Dhabi island, Qasr al Watan literally means ‘Palace of the Nation’. It was opened to the public in 2019.

The vast site contains the offices of the President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as well as the Vice-President of the United Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed.

The main palace building is home to the UAE legislature and is, for the most part, open to the public.

Qasr Al Watan allows visitors to explore the UAE’s history and traditions further while they journey through a vast collection of cultural artefacts, art and rare manuscripts. Visitors will also be able to understand the Palace’s architecture and design, which incorporates the essence of the spirit of the United Arab Emirates.

There are several visitor options to tour Qasr Al Watan.

We recommend buying a ticket in advance to visit Qasr Al Watan. Whilst it is possible to buy tickets on the door, capacity is limited, and you run the risk of turning up when the palace is closed on state business.

You can also take a guided tour rather than going it alone. If you’re happy to keep up with a group, this will ensure that you get the most out of your visit, as the guides are very knowledgeable and able to answer any questions that you might have.

Another option is to visit the palace as part of a tour package. If you are visiting as part of a delegation or tour group from Dubai, your ticket is likely to have already covered your entry and tour of the palace. Read the fine print of your ticket to see if this is included or if you need to add on a guided tour.

If you are not visiting as part of a guided bus tour, there are numerous ways to get to Qasr Al Hosn by yourself, including public buses and taxis.

Qasr al Watan is also a dedicated stop on the hop-on-hop-off Big Bus and on the Visit Abu Dhabi free shuttle.

Qasr Al Hosn

Another palace open to the public in Abu Dhabi city is Qasr Al Hosn. This fortified historic home of the ruling Al Nahyan family was one of the first buildings in Abu Dhabi. It is now an interactive and engaging museum that gives a broad insight into the city’s history and culture.

Constructed on the western side of the verdant Al Ain Oasis, the palace was home to the country’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed until 1966. It was converted into a museum in 1998 and now gives visitors an insight into royal life in the first half of the 20th Century.

In stark contrast to the modern Presidential Palace, it’s a fascinating stop for those wanting to learn more about the country’s humble beginnings and the Al Nahyan family.

Private Palaces in Abu Dhabi

Driving around the city, particularly in the Al Bateen area, you will see high, often ornate walls encircling vast houses and gardens. Some of these are government buildings, but more often than not, they are the city palaces of Abu Dhabi’s richest residents.

You should not attempt to go inside, or take photographs of these buildings, as they are private homes and are not open to the public. There are strict privacy laws in Abu Dhabi, and taking photos, however innocently, could land you in big trouble.

One of these private palaces is known as Sea Palace or Qasr Al Bahr. This was the late Sheikh Zayed’s official residence and is a restricted area. The area around Sea Palace also takes its name and is currently being developed into a luxury residential area.

How to get there – navigating around Abu Dhabi

Most of these attractions can be easily accessed by staying in central Abu Dhabi, by taxi, or as stops accessible on the Abu Dhabi Big Bus Hop-on-hop-off service.

Top Tip: If you are visiting Abu Dhabi from Dubai, it is highly recommended you arrange a private tour to capture all the highlights and work to your own timetable rather than being stuck in a big coach group.

Note that it would be impossible to fit all of these attractions into a 1 Day Abu Dhabi itinerary – we’d suggest picking out three from the list you want to see most; Al Ain really needs a full extra day in your UAE travel plans, whether you’re coming from Abu Dhabi or Dubai.

1. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The unmissable first attraction on most Abu Dhabi visitors’ lists is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, and with good reason. It is not just a stunning landmark but an active house of worship, open to all religions to admire and reflect.

There is a strict standard of dress expected, but this only adds to the experience. It is free to enter the Grand Mosque and free to join a guided tour.

2. The Louvre Abu Dhabi

Although not directly Emirati or Bedioun culture, The Louvre Museum Abu Dhabi is an unmissable part of the UAE’s modern culture, reflecting the blend of many different cultures and traditions.

The Louvre Museum’s main galleries take you on a journey through humanity, from early civilisations and communications through to the modern era of art, seamlessly blending between East and West.

3. Qasr al Watan – The Presidential Palace

Part of the new Presidential Palace complex, Qasr al Watan is one of the most beautiful examples of modern Islamic architecture.

Whilst you cannot visit the working parts of the Palace, visitors are invited to explore the public areas of Qasr Al Watan, enjoy daily guided tours, and explore the expansive gardens, the Great Hall, the library and an evening sound and light show at 7.30 PM.

4. The Founders Memorial

Launched during the Year of Zayed – the 100-year anniversary of the country’s founding father, HH Sheikh Zayed – the Founders Memorial is a stunning sculptural display set at the end of the Corniche on the corner of Emirates Palace before you cross to the marina. 

It is open day and night, but it is most impressive at sunset when the 1327 dangling geometric shapes become illuminated by 2000 lights to form a 3D image of HH Sheikh Zayed.

Free tours can be arranged of around 30 minutes in Arabic and English.

5. Wahat Al Karama

Situated opposite the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a Memorial and Pavillion of Honour were opened in 2016 to immortalise the sacrifices made by UAE nationals in active service for their country.

Translated to English, the “Oasis of Dignity”  is made of 31 aluminium-clad tablets that lean on one another in support, and are inscribed with poems and quotations.  This is an incredibly sad yet important chapter in the UAE’s modern history, a country rarely involved in conflict.

You can easily combine a visit to the Grand Mosque with Wahat al Karama for some of the best distance Mosque views but crossing the busy freeway is a challenge. (You can now catch a courtesy bus every 30 minutes between SZGM and Wahat al Karama).

6. Qasr al Hosn

The oldest standing building in Abu Dhabi, built in the 1790s, the stone fort was originally constructed to overlook the coastal trade routes and protect the growing island settlement.

Recently reopened after extensive renovation work, Qasr al Hosn is now the city’s centrepiece of culture and learning.

As well as a history museum, it is also home to the Cultural Foundation and the city’s new Abu Dhabi Children’s Library. There is a daily program of cultural events and special events held on the grounds throughout the year.

7. UAE Heritage Village

Based on Abu Dhabi’s Corniche breakwater with stunning views back to the ultra-modern Abu Dhabi skyline.

The Heritage Village is run by the Emirates Heritage Club, giving you a taster of traditional bedouin housing, an old-style souk, and artisans producing handicrafts, including pottery and weaving. On occasion, they also have falconry displays and craftsmen demonstrations.

It has been outshone, however, by the re-opening of Qasr al Hosn, which has many more interactive displays. Entry is completely free if you are seeking just a small introductory taster to Bedouin life in the city.

8. The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital

This humble building on the city’s outskirts offers a fascinating insight into Emirati culture and the importance of falconry.

A 2-hour guided tour of the facilities in Sweihan will introduce you to the historical importance of falconry to the Bedouin people and take you to the hospital itself, where these majestic birds are cared for. You will have the opportunity to have up-close encounters with the birds.

It has a heftier price tag than some of the other attractions listed here, but in our own experience, it was worth every dirham. It provides a really in-depth tour with a narrative, a chance to see the Falcons up close, and even an operation. Pre-booking is essential.

Al Ain Cultural Attractions

The next four cultural attractions are based in Al Ain, the Oasis city that sits 160kms south of Abu Dhabi city centre.  It is also known as the cultural capital of the UAE, home to the country’s founding fathers and steeped in history – you can find our complete guide to Al Ain here.

9. Al Ain Palace Museum

The historic royal residence of the UAE’s founding father HH Sheikh Zayed. This beautifully restored homestead in Al Ain is a vast contrast to the modern-day Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi city.

The palace was his primary family home until 1966 and has been restored and turned into a museum of the Al Nahyan family’s history. Delving into HH Sheikh Zayed’s personal and political life, it gives you a good taste of what life was like in the UAE before the discovery of oil. Abu Dhabi Culture has advised the Palace will close on 1 July 2024 for extensive renovations; a reopening date is yet to be provided

10. Qasr al Muwaiji

Also situated in Al Ain, this much more modern museum complex sits on the grounds of the original birthplace of the country’s second president HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed al Nahyan.

Explore the historic buildings, listen to oral narratives and follow the significant achievements of HH Sheikh Khalifa’s life.

11. Al Ain Oasis

The 3000-acre oasis is located in the centre of Al Ain. Home to over 147,000 palm trees, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2011, along with six other smaller oases across the city.

It is almost compulsory for everyone who lives in the UAE to understand the way of life. Explore the 3000-year-old falaj irrigation system – a grid of waterways for channelling fresh clean water from off the mountains and into the oasis. You will also find the miniature oasis which is an interactive display breaking down the workings of the oasis.

12. The Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre

Situated inside the Al Ain Zoo, this is one of the country’s hidden gems, containing learning resources for culture, heritage and natural history – and completely deserving of more attention, arguably where we’d recommend all visitors to the UAE start their learning journey!

There are five interactive galleries spread over multiple levels that take you on a journey from the desert past, local geology and neolithic period life all the way through to the country’s present and future, along with sustainability education and initiatives.

More Cultural Events in Abu Dhabi

In addition to these permanent cultural landmarks, there are other seasonal events to consider when making travel plans to Abu Dhabi.

A Camel Beauty Pageant – The Al Dhafra Festival

If you are living in the UAE, or are visiting during December, then attending the Al Dhafra festival in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi is a must.

Established in 2007, the festival was established to educate younger generations about their country’s indigenous heritage, traditions and culture. Events range from the ever-popular camel beauty contest through to date packing, camel milking, Saluki racing and falconry.

Information on the event’s program, in English at least, has been scant in the past but is improving.  It’s one of those events you should turn up to and absorb the atmosphere, situated in Madinat Zayed Park, approximately 2 hours from Abu Dhabi city.

Sheikh Zayed Heritage Festival

A great new addition to the UAE culture calendar, this annual event is held in a purpose-built centre for culture in Al Watha, just outside of Abu Dhabi city. It showcases local foods, dance and traditional events while taking visitors on a journey from ancient times to a prosperous society.

As the event has grown in popularity, it can now be enjoyed for several months over the cooler winter season. This year the festival is open nightly from 17 November 2023 to 9 March 2024. The entry fee is just 5 AED per person.

Emirati Cuisine

Last but not least, to truly experience Abu Dhabi and the Emirati culture, you need to try traditional Emirati cuisine. We suggest you seek out one of these great Emirati restaurants in Abu Dhabi.

Where to Find the Founders Memorial Abu Dhabi

You’ll find the Founders Memorial beside Emirates Palace Hotel, at the corner of Corniche Road and 18th Street in Abu Dhabi.

Coming along the Abu Dhabi Corniche heading west, it is straight ahead of you before you come to the Palace on your right, or as you turn towards Abu Dhabi Marina Mall, it will be on your left.

If you head towards Abu Dhabi Marina Mall, then u-turn at the next lights, it will take you back to a more convenient car park right next to the visitor centre.

The Visit Abu Dhabi complimentary shuttle bus (route B1) and the Big Bus Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus Tour also stop here for visitors’ convenience (or you can just take a snap from the bus as you head in the direction of Qasr Al Watan).

If you are staying at any of the hotels along the west end of the Corniche (such as The St Regis, Radisson Blu, Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers or Grand Hyatt) it makes for a wonderful evening walk within easy distance.

You can join in with complimentary tours held every 30 minutes in Arabic and English. Spots for these are limited; you should advance book your visit here, though spots can be available on a walk-up basis.

Etiquette for the Founder’s Memorial Abu Dhabi

Although not a religious building, it’s a place of quiet contemplation and reflection. You should be respectful of other visitors and observe rules and regulations posted on site.

Women are not required to be dressed in an abaya or full head covering but should be mindful of the dress code and etiquette in Abu Dhabi public places. We explain this in a lot more detail here.

Abu Dhabi’s latest architectural wonder Qasr Al Watan open to the public

Qasr al Watan – the UAE’s Presidential Palace – opened its dramatic gates to the public in March 2019. Sitting on vast grounds occupying 380,000 acres at the tip of Abu Dhabi island, it is now one of Abu Dhabi’s most magnificent buildings – though it faces stiff competition from the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque as the city’s most beautiful building!

The Palace allows visitors to explore the UAE’s history and traditions further while they journey through a vast collection of cultural artefacts, art and rare manuscripts. Visitors will also be able to understand the Palace’s architecture and design, which incorporates the essence of the spirit of the United Arab Emirates.

Far more than just a stunning building, the Palace serves as a functioning house of Government.

Qasr al Watan includes the offices of the President of the UAE (His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan), His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum (Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai) and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi (to be announced following the recent death of Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan).

It is also where the Federal Supreme Council (the UAE’s highest legislative and administrative body) meet and is home to UAE Cabinet Meetings. The private offices are not included in the public tour, but the main palace building and library are open for exploring.

Unless the Presidential Palace is closed for state visitors or special events, doors are open to the public areas of the palace seven days a week.

• 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM (last entry 5:00 PM)

• Mondays are now open (previously, they were closed, same as Louvre)

• Ramadan Hours 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry 4:00 PM) No Palace in Motion Lightshow.

Tickets can be pre-booked online here, or purchased at the ticket counter, though its recommended you buy in advance as only an allocated number of tickets will be sold per hour.

Group tours have recommenced post-COVID. You can pay an extra 20 AED per person (for groups of up to 4) or hire your own private guide for 600 AED.

Self-Guided Tours of Qasr Al Watan

You can now opt for a multimedia guide at the ticketing booth (20 AED additional cost) to enhance your Qasr Al Watan experience. Take your headset throughout your visit and listen along to pre-recorded audio clips for an interactive experience across the Palace.

There’s also a kids’ multimedia headset option, which includes fun games and activities they can enjoy along the way; they’ll even get a palace-issued certificate on completion!

The self-guided tours are available in English, Arabic, German, Russian, and Chinese.

We’d highly recommend this option for a more immersive experience, as signage alone will not be enough for a thorough understanding.

Qasr Al Watan Dress Code

If you are wondering what to wear to Abu Dhabi’s Presidential Palace, we would err on the side of conservative. The official guidance is “Guests should wear respectful clothing when in the palace.”

The dress code rules are not as restrictive as what you should wear to the Grand Mosque; however, ladies should cover their knees and shoulders and wear nothing too clingy or revealing. A head covering is NOT required; men should wear trousers and tops with shirt sleeves.

The Presidential Palace can be found in an area of Abu Dhabi known as Ras al Akhdar. Many refer to it as the West Corniche. Head beyond the end of the main Corniche beach road, past the Founders Memorial and Emirates Palace on your right and Etihad Towers on your left.

At the very end of this road, you will come to the incredibly grand entrance gate – this is for VIPs only! Visitors will enter at a smaller entrance just off to the right, where you are taken to visitor parking. From here, pre-booked tickets are checked, and then a short shuttle (with commentary) takes you through the palace grounds to the palace entrance.

Qasr al Watan is a stop on the Big Bus Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus Route. Your entry to Qasr Al Watan is not included in the Big Bus ticket; however, you can easily walk from the bus stop to the entrance in the cooler winter months.

Cultural Express Service Dubai to Abu Dhabi

Launched in 2022, this is a FREE bus service takes visitors on a first-come, first-served basis from Dubai to 2 key cultural attractions in Abu Dhabi, the Louvre (closed Mondays) and Qasr Al Watan. Here’s how it works:

• Departure from Sheraton Mall of the Emirates Hotel, Dubai at 9:00 am
• Arrival at Louvre Abu Dhabi at 10:35 am
• Departure from Louvre Abu Dhabi at 1:00 pm
• Arrival at Qasr Al Watan at 1:35 pm
• Departure from Qasr Al Watan at 6:00 pm
• Arrival at Louvre Abu Dhabi at 6:35 pm
• Arrival at Sheraton Mall of the Emirates Hotel, Dubai, at 8:10 pm

NB When you are booking a tour to Abu Dhabi, be careful on the distinction between the Presdiential Palace and Emirates Palace; some include a photo stop only to the neighbouring Emirates Palace Hotel, this is NOT the same thing as Qasr Al Watan – Presideintal Palace, make sure you’re clear as we’ve seen some tour operators ambigiously desrcibre ‘Royal Palace’ and ther’s no such thing!

After arriving at the visitor centre, guests are transported within the grounds by a free shuttle (read luxury coach) to the palace entrance.

A Grand Entrance to Qasr Al Watan – Presidential Palace Abu Dhabi

1. A Memory from the Palace

Your journey through the palace commences with the Media Room, where official press conferences are held. Enjoy this photo opportunity to commemorate your visit to one of the world’s most unique cultural landmarks (pictures can be collected at the end of your tour in the gift shop).

In ordinary times, this is the point where group tours would gather to commence their guided palace tour.

2. The Great Hall

Next, you’ll step foot into the utterly breathtaking Great Hall. “Great” is not quite superlative enough to describe the grandeur and extreme opulence exuded by this space. Shades of blue and white complement an abundance of gold decorating every surface.

From the central dome and archways down to the finest details in mosaic tiling, it is a stunning display of Arabian craftsmanship and artistry.

Adding to the intrigue, each corner of the room has a large, mirrored geometric cubes offering different sensory experiences. A unique juxtaposition, let your inner art critic decide whether you love them or hate them!

3. Presidential Gifts

Here you’ll find an exhibition of diplomatic gifts that the UAE has received from the past decades. A fascinating insight into cultural considerations and protocols in selecting diplomatic gifts, all beautifully displayed.  

4. Spirit of Collaboration

Dominated by a 350,000, 12-tonne crystal chandelier, this is the room where the UAE Cabinet and Federal Supreme Council meet. It is also where the Gulf Cooperation Council and Arab League meet when the UAE is hosting (this wing of the palace may be closed during your visit).

5. The Presidential Banquet

In the stuff of fairytales, see where officials from around the globe are treated to modern Emirati hospitality.

6. Presidential Meeting Room

Where state officials and dignitaries from around the world are hosted in a traditional Majilis-style set up.

7. Qasr Al Watan Library

Featuring a collection of 50,000 books, the library aims to preserve and share centuries of Arabian knowledge and culture.

8. House of Knowledge: Age of Enlightenment

Encompassing two wings, this exhibit highlights the most notable Arab scholars in the fields of astronomy, science, art and literature.

Sitting between the two wings of the House of Knowledge stands the simply stunning gold calligraphy sculpture “The Power of Words”. The gold is actually an inscription quoting the country’s founding father;

“Wealth is not money and oil. Wealth lies in people, and it is worthless if not dedicated to serve the people” ~ Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan

The sculpture is designed and crafted by the renowned Emirati artist Mattar bin Lahej.

9. Palace in Motion

If you are able to stick around until the evening, you can catch Palace in Motion, an intriguing nighttime light and sound show that sees the palace lit up. Previously only on weekends, you can now catch the palace light show nightly from 7:00 pm. The show lasts approximately 15 minutes.

A gift shop can be found at the conclusion of your palace tour before taking the shuttle back to the palace entrance.

The Palace Grounds

The palace grounds are quickly becoming well-established, having started just a few short years ago as a blank canvas.

In addition to the Power of Words sculpture found inside the palace, a further two silver sculptures can be found in the glistening sunlight of the garden. Also adorned with quotes from Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nayhan they read:

“Science and history walk side by side. By using science, man can record his history and preserve it for generations to come, so others may learn from it and come to know what their ancestors achieved.”

and

“The education of our people is a great wealth. We are proud of our educated nation because through knowledge and science we will open the horizon to a glorious future.”

The sculptures are intentionally designed for visitors to step inside along them to be appreciated from a different perspective – and yes, they are utterly instagrammable! #QasrAlWatan

Where to Eat Near Qasr Al Watan

There is currently one dining option within the Palace at “Legma” grab ‘n go, which you’ll find at both at the Palace exit and the Visitor Centre exit.

Dhiyafat Qasr Al Watan, found in the main Palace and Maqha Al Maktaba, situated within Qasr Al Watan Library, are temporarily closed.

What restaurants are near Qasr Al Watan?

Nearby there’s a large selection of restaurants at neighbouring hotels. You will likely need a taxi or some form of transport, though, as the buildings are not really within easy walking distance in the heat.

• We highly recommend combining Qasr Al Watan with afternoon tea at Emirates Palace
